Bonds's head size

Like watching a car wreck, I couldn't help but check out the Game of Shadows excerpt in Chronicle......mentioned this:

Bonds had gone from a size 42 to a size 52 jersey; from size 10 ½ to size 13 cleats; and from a size 7 1/8 to size 7 ¼ cap, even though he had taken to shaving his head

I'm not gonna try to talk about his feet growing 10%....but the size of his head has often been cited as evidence of his freakishness.  1/8" in 10 years?  People are telling me they can see this with naked eye, let alone it being "humongous"?

I'm preaching to the choir here, yeah.  Just nuts.

Re: Bonds's head size
I know nothing about Barry's head size, but I'd like to know where they got the information for this. Hat sized vary depending on the manufacturer. Half of my hats are size 7's, others are 7 1/8.

Re: Bonds's head size
From the smaller end of the spectrum it's true too. I can't find 6 3/4 hardly anywhere but I can wear a 6 7/8 cap sometimes. granted it's only one interval but still, there's a variation.

Depending on the fit of the hat and my current hairstyle, I'm anywhere from a 7 5/8 - 8+.   Ya ya ya, I've got a Bochy-sized melon.

Are hats over size 8 as hard to find as 6 3/4?

I wear 7 3/4, and that itself was hard to find.  I don't know if it's because it's more common than most people think, but it took me quite some time to find one.

They aren't that hard to find...you just have to know where to look.  Buying direct from a place like Eastbay is probably the best bet.  You might want to try that out if you're having problems finding smaller ones.

I'm always wary of buying fitted caps online. Everyone seems to fit just a little differently. I like to try on a few in the store before i decide to get one. And I know the Giants Dugout was out of my size for like the entire second half of the season.

I'm just so tired of this. We get it. He cheated. So did Giambi, Palmeiro, Sheffield, McGwire, Canseco, Dykstra, Caminiti. And that is just the known list of good players. I'm sure the truth would blow peoples minds. I jsut don't understand the lengths that the goverment is going to get Bonds. I guess that is because I see steriod use in the saem light as recreational drug use. Nobody would let them go this far to lock up a junkie would they? All of this work just to get a perjury conviction? They arn't even trying to bust him on the steriods any more BECAUSE THEY FAILED.

If good boys MgWire, Giambi, and Palmiero (two of them at one time strong HOF candidates) didn't manage to put anything in perspective, Roger Clemens certainly won't.

Hopefully, time will put things in perspective and nobody else has to deal with the hysterics of the, well, hysterical. With luck time will do that.

Re: Bonds's head size
With all due respect, I don't think he was just citing Clemens' stardom as reason his being caught would put things into perspective.  It's more of the fact a "sure-fire HOF" pitcher was doing it as well.  I know to most of us here at MCC, pitchers don't get the free pass when it comes to this steroid issue, but to the rest of the nation, it would appear that they do.

People seem to be quick to accuse (jokingly, sarcastically, or knowingly) hitters of being "juicers" the second they pass 40 HRs.  However, when a pitcher can strike out 200 in a season or recover from injuries faster than they should, they attribute it all to talent or (dare I say) "heart".

Re: Bonds's head size
I'm just not so convinced that position has anything to do with it as far as perspective is concerned. I think people are looking at faces, mostly, and they already know the face that they want to punch in.

After all, Grimsley was one of the biggest names in this thing for a short while, and though he was never very good, he was a pitcher. But now both of those facts (his name and position) are forgotten because what people care about is hating Barry Bonds, and if that means noticing Home Runs because Barry Bonds hits homeruns and not strikeouts because he doesn't, that's what they're going to notice.

In my opinion, anyway. That;s just the way I see it. Could be wrong. Could very possibly be wrong.

Don't get tired yet. Bonds and the Giants need soldiers in the foxholes.

Oh, and Barry just said on arrival at Scottsdale that he's going to keep playing beyond this season, so get ready for another hitch or two.

The adversarial nature of baseball means it's every team against all the others. The regional and national media members have favorite teams as well -- and almost none of them root for the San Francisco Giants.

They will attack as long as Bonds is Big and swatting homers.

Re: Bonds's head size
in any event, the story is littered with errors, inuendo and outright opinion (not fact) and simply adds fuel to the fire regarding the media's promotion and provocation of anti-Bonds sentiment.
Legal experts scoffed at the lawsuit. On his MSNBC show, Keith Olbermann wondered whether Bonds' filing didn't make him look "more guilty."

Yes, Keith Olberman, noted legal expert. What a joke.

How about this little diddy?

Novitzky's next moves suggested he had taken on the additional task of cleaning up performance-enhancing drugs in all of baseball. On April 19, at about the time the subpoena for Anderson was being drafted, Novitzky and a team of drug agents watched a postman deliver a package in suburban Scottsdale[Jason Grimsley's home], not far from where Kim Bell once lived.

Now what does Kim Bell have to do with Jason Grimsley? The answer is NOTHING. It's just more innuendo. Grimsley lives in the same neighborhod that Kim Bell once did. Thus, Bonds used roids. Total nonsequitor.

Also, Novisky is an IRS agent. an IRS agent. He appointed himself a drug agent. Just lovely.

This part is my favorite:

The Grimsley affair, made public when Novitzky's affidavit was filed in the courthouse in Phoenix, rattled a baseball establishment already uneasy over the investigation of Bonds, and it fuelled more cynicism about baseball's power hitters. One target was Philadelphia's slugging Ryan Howard, who was suspect merely because he was having a great year. "Is Ryan Howard juiced?" columnist Dan Wetzel wrote on the Yahoo Sports web site in September.

"There is no reason, no whisper, no allegation that suggests Howard is cheating," he wrote. "In fact, there is plenty of talk that he is clean. But how can you blindly trust anyone anymore?"

You just gotta love the media. Absolutely NO EVIDENCE exists that Ryan Howard used roids or any other drug, and Dan Weasel writes a column accusing him of cheating, even though Weasel ACKNOWLEDGES that he has NO EVIDENCE, not even a whisper! AND there's "plenty of talk" to the contrary! JUST IGNORE THAT AND SPREAD A BASELESS RUMOR!! FUN! FUN! FUN!

This scandal is very much media driven, to say the least. And the SF Comical reporters just used an unfounded media accusation against Ryan Howard as evidence that Bonds is hurting the game. With who? Did any Phillie fans accuse Howard of cheating? NO. So far as I can tell, he was their favorite player. I'd say Dan Weasel spreading lies about Howard cheating is bad for the game. He's hurting the game. Not Bonds.

Also, Grimsley, a pitcher, got busted for using roids. Thus, power hitters are guilty of using roids. Jeez. You'd think these "reporters" would have taken a class in logic at some point in their education. Just awful.

Lastly, there's this:

The point man, as usual, was IRS Agent Jeff Novitzky. He began a search for more proof that Bonds had lied under oath in 2003 when he testified that he had never used steroids

Now, I admit I haven't read the book or the grand jury testimony, but from what I understand from reading media accounts and the excerpts, is that Bonds testified that he did not KNOWINGLY use steroids. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but that's my understanding.

If I'm right, however, these guys are complete assholes. These guys illegally received secret grand jury testimony and wrote the friggin' book containing that material. You'd think they would at least get that part of the story right. Or perhaps it's plausible that Bonds didn't knowingly use roids, but not plausible that Bonds didn't use roids at all. Yeah. That's the ticket. That's a better storyline than the truth!

We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Re: Bonds's head size
Let me preface this by saying I am not denying he used steroids, but I would not rely on these changes as evidence of juicing.  I am Bonds' age and from my twenties until now my shoe size went from 12 to 14, and yes, my hat size went from 7 1/2 to 7 5/8, a whole 1/8".  Many guys have a tendency to, ahem, "fill out" from a youthful frame to a more "relaxed fit" kind of frame.  Weight gain, whether through strength training or caloric intake can cause these physical transformations.  This is not necessarily evidence of anything other than age, caloric intake and strength training.  That being said, it could also be circumstantial evidence of better living through chemistry.

Cold Pizza getting colder
I made the mistake of watching Cold Pizza this morning with some guy I'd never heard of and Skip Brainless talking about Bonds. Jay Crawford (the host) was the worst, though. He made 2 huge mistatements (read: lies). First he asked about Bonds refusing to cooperate with the Mitchell investigation. that was it. He did not put it into context. He just just stated as if it were factual that Bonds "refused" to cooperate.

The truth is that Bonds (via his attorney) stated that he would like to cooperate, but that so long as he is under investigation by the grand jury, he can't help. The attorney went so far as to ask the SF US attorney, in writing, whether Bonds was still a subject of the grand jury probe. The US attorney refused to answer yes or no. So, Mitchell was told sorry, Bonds can't help. In other words, he was pleading the 5th. Fine. That's not evidence of guilt or innocence. But that also is not the same as simply "refusing to cooperate." I seemed to have read that somewhere recently. Oh yeah. I read it yesterday on ESPN!

Second, Crawford asked about the players union telling the players "not to cooperate" with the Mitchell probe. Hello? Is that what the Union said? Is it possible that the Union actually told the players that it was up to them as individuals as to whether or not they would cooperate with Mitchell.

I know. Sports journalists are an easy target. But so long as they are going to spout outright falsehoods and call it "news" then they are going to get called on it. Idiots.

We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Re: Bonds's head size
This ain't journalism. It's not the worst stuff written about Bonds over the past few years, but it ain't journalism.
To some around the Giants, it was no surprise that Bonds - his contract expiring at the end of the year - would get hotter and healthier down the stretch.

Yes... that's Barry Bonds.. never producing unless it's contract time. The guy won an MVP right after he signed a long-term deal in 1993, and then had argably the greatest offensive season in history in 2002 after signing another deal. Maybe he just gets confused about the definition of "contract year." And again... the "to some around the Giants" preface can't see journalism with a telescope.

Still, the left fielder had looked so awful it seemed the Giants owner might finally find the strength to cut ties with Bonds.

Bonds certainly wasn't his old self in the first half of 2006, but can you really describe a .971 OPS and surprisingly adequate defense as "so awful"? That's just lazy writing.

After no other clubs expressed interest, the Giants offered Bonds a one year deal for $15.8 million.

While I'm rather certain that no teams offered him $16M, can a journalist categorically say that no other clubs expressed interest at all?

Still, we had been optimistic that the Justice Department would abandon its leak investigation. BALCO was about sports and drugs. The government had demonstrated that it thought the case was of little consequence -- prosecutors had implicitly condoned the athletes' steroid use and offered lenient plea deals to the drug dealers. The grand jury leak had posed no harm to national security, and there was no threat to anyone's physical safety.

Let every other journalist in the country defend you on this one, boys... they're doing it anyway. When you have made a lot of money trying to create a firestorm about a baseball player's drug use, trying to downplay the importance of the case in your own defense doesn't smell very good. I don't think these hacks should have been threatened with prison, but I'd like to think there are better reasons for this other than that their actions "posed no harm to national security, and there was no threat to anyone's physical safety." It's not like Bonds is a terrorist, despite what Jeff Pearlman says.

If the Justice Department could target reporters whose work had been praised by the president himself, the press advocates reasoned, every reporter in the country with a confidential source, and every media outlet that published a story that was of interest to federal law enforcement, was vulnerable.

Really, does the fact that Bush said five kind words to you when you met him before the correspondent's dinner have any relevance in any of this? (As an aside, Ted Robinson really thinks it does, and he brought it up several times when hosting on KNBR last week.)

Dennis Miller had an old bit on Weekend Update about supporting the first amendment issues behind 2 Live Crew during their obscenity trial, but wishing that it was someone more talented like Jimi Hendrix that was at the forefront of the issue. That's kind of how I feel about this case. I'm glad these two self-aggrandizing hacks aren't under investigation anymore, but it would be a lot easier to support, say, Christiane Amanpour.

"prosecutors had implicitly condoned the athletes' steroid use and offered lenient plea deals to the drug dealers."

It could be argued that part of the reason why the defendants got off with lenient pleas was because the case was compromised by the leaks.

Re: Bonds's head size
Of course, a perjury investigation or an IRS investigation are both about "sports and drugs," but a grand jury leak isn't. They're different?

Also, "The grand jury leak had posed no harm to national security, and there was no threat to anyone's physical safety."

BUT "Sports and Drugs" do pose a threat to national security and people's safety?

Really? Bonds, Giambi and Sheffield all look pretty safe to me. So does Marion Jones.

And grand jury leaks undermine the integrity of the criminal justice system (not unlike perjury) ...but that's it. Nothing important or anything.

the good news
We remained determined not to betray the sources who had helped tell the BALCO story. But we recognized that unless an appeals court intervened, it was likely we would be sent to prison. Then, on Feb. 14, the prosecutors announced they were withdrawing our subpoenas and ending their efforts to force us to testify. Former BALCO defense lawyer Troy Ellerman had confessed to providing us with grand jury information, the government said. He had been implicated by a former employee. We learned of these developments from a government press release.

On Feb. 15, Ellerman pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and three other felonies. Under terms of a plea agreement, he faces two years in prison -- more time behind bars than any of the steroid dealers convicted in the BALCO conspiracy and any of the star athletes who used BALCO drugs to enhance their performance.

I hadn't heard that yet. Apparently, it wasn't as prominently reported as Barry Bonds' hat size. Then again, if you're a big rodeo buff then you, of course, were the first to know.
