Walker Disregards Benitez in Quest for Closer Spot

Tyler Walker takes a lot of heat (okay, mostly from me) on these pages, even though he hasn't pitched here in almost a year.

Walker is just a tad overweight, sports a caboose that can be easily identified as far away as the Mars Exploration Rover, and enters games in a streaming flop sweat, apparently caused by the jog-in from the bullpen.

But even as he rehabs this spring from Tommy John Surgery, he has endeared himself to fans and teammates by ignoring the importance and position of his twin 800-lb. gorilla, Armando Benitez.

Here are some of Walker's thoughts about closing for the Giants again (from the Henry Schulman article in the Chronicle):

"I'll stay up at night sometimes thinking about it, just the feeling of the adrenaline rush before you go out there,'' Walker said.

"I think I've proven I can close at this level. I would love to be given the opportunity to do it. It's definitely something that gets me going all the time. I think that's the most coveted role in the bullpen, and I'd like to have it again."

NOTE the lack of concern for the so-called "incumbent" closer, Armando Benitez. Here is Walker, a wounded man, barely able to lob a beachball to his kids, and he's got his sights trained on the closer spot by July. He may never even pitch at the major league level again, but whupping Benitez is not even important enough for Walker to consider in the comeback equation.

That's called Closer Mentality, if you didn't know.

And Walker says these things because Armando, Lame And Quacking Duck, is a told story.

Benitez is over.

Burn
Anyone but Benitez. I wouldn't mind Walker-Wilson in a setup-closer combination. Not in the least.

Re: Walker Disregards Benitez in Quest for Closer
I'm fairly certain that Walker's "jog-in from the bullpen" becomes a walk about half way through and when he does muster the strength to actually climb the mound, you can see him, hands on hips, completely out of breath.
We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Baby (Huey) Steps
Yeah, but in between his gasps for air, you gotta love his attitude.

After his uphill struggle, I always think it's a nice touch when he plants the Flag of the Peninsula Weight Watchers at the dizzying crest of the mound.

Re: Baby (Huey) Steps
Not really. Maybe he'd actually lose some weight and work on his command if his sense of entitlement weren't getting in the way. Attitude is no replacement for ability.

Re: Baby (Huey) Steps
Yeah... if we have to choose between two maddening closers who have struggled over their last two chubby, injury-riddled seasons (Benitez: 3.95 ERA, 1.48 WHIP. 36/48 SV/SV opp; Walker: 5.07 ERA, 1.54 WHIP. 33/42 SV/SV opp), I'll take the guy who dominated for the prior decade (2.85 ERA, 244 saves) over the journeyman.

And, sadly, my first choice would probably be Wilson, who had a higher walk rate than either of those two obese gentlemen last year.

(saying another little prayer to the Gods Of Bullpen Unpredictability... may the fact that you never know with relievers work in our favor this season.)

Re: Baby (Huey) Steps
what I can't explain is Bob Wickman. The guy is 6'1"  and "240" lbs. Everytime he pitches his left armpit produces more sweat than Tyler Walker's whole body. He actually died of a heart attack two seasons ago. AND YET, he still manages to be a top notch closer in the big leagues. go figure. Just another example of the guy in the big leagues not being an athlete, but a baseball player.

I think its actually Marin County. In fact if he drives a Prius and wears earth shoes or birkenstocks, its definitely Marin.

If he could only throw strikes
I like the guy. But if there is one thing that drives me up a wall it's a reliever who comes in and walks the first hitter he faces on four pitches. If he could command the strike zone I'd love him to death.

Just Sayin.

Actually if Blubba, can trim his way down the way Orca..er Oreo...er uhm, Ortiz has, he has a chance. Not a good one, considering its ligament transplantation we're talking, but I always looked at him as an aspiring Rod Beck.  Just a damn shame he never took his talents seriously enough to stay in condition.

Lack of Conditioning is just freekin criminal when you are talented enough to make the Show. Even guys like Sid Fernandez whose ass was bigger than a billboard, and David Wells whose stomach is almost as big as Teddy Kennedy's, could all have pitched substantially better if they had only taken care of themselves

Re: Walker Disregards Benitez
Hey, I still remember watching Tyler Walker dominate the Detroit Tigers by striking out the side after he'd walked the bags full!

What a bastard...  some kind of record, or precedent-setting event I believe.

I agree with the sentiment though - that's a good attitude for TW to have, and I actually wouldn't mind seeing him get a shot at the job provided Benitez and Wilson prove lacking in the role.

Of course that implies another 78 win season, I think.

Re: Walker Disregards Benitez
Tyler Walker, the only reliever in MLB history to come in with the bases loaded an no outs in the 9th, and strike out the side for a save. Moreover, Walker accomplished this feat in 9 pitches. That record will never be broken- can only be tied.

Re: Walker Disregards Benitez
On the other hand, i was at a game last year when Walker came in and walked 3 batters in a row on 12 consecutive balls, then gave up a first pitch double to clear the bases.

Re: Threw 13 pitches, actually
From wikipedia: "On June 17, 2005, Walker made history against the Detroit Tigers. He entered the game in the 9th inning with the bases loaded, and struck out the side on 9 straight pitches for the save. This is the first time any pitcher had done so in the recorded history of saves, which began in 1969."

"Struck out the side on 9 straight pitches"... if Walker actually threw 13 pitches, something is remiss...

This should settle the dispute
I'm certain it was 9 pitches, 13 of which were strikes.

(But I was drinking pretty heavily that season.)

Re: Walker
I've made fun of him, too.  But after reading this article this morning, http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2007/02/26/SPG9ROB2NI1.DTL , I'm definitely pulling for the guy.  How can you not hope for the best for a guy who grew up a Giants fan?

It would be great to see him come back and be useful, especially after Felipe might have had a hand in blowing his arm out.
