OT: MCC Writing Group is a GO
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mccwriting/
I went with Yahoo Groups, and for the moment all y'all who wanted to sign up, go there and join. The details aren't settled yet -- hey, if anyone can come up with a snazzier title than McCovey Chronicles Writing Group, then by all means! -- but we'll (hopefully) come to a consensus once we're all in (like Winn).
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

I'm on board! Uh...

I don't think I like the way this rhyme is heading. Excuse me while I go wash my keyboard out with soap.

I've been Multi-Tasking
ADMIN (ooh ooh I'm fancy and authoritative)
As for administrative things, does anybody strenuously object to or approve of scheduled writing slots? What I imagine is 2-4 people per week whose works others would focus on -- unscheduled pieces would be permissible, but wouldn't get as much attention, or something.
I'm also thinking about a critique guideline for members who are relatively new to the workshop process to hopefully ensure that writers get helpful feedback. Yay/nay? I don't think it'd hurt, so feel free to give me some provisional guidelines.
Do we want to institute word count limits? It'd mostly make sure that critiquers can give adequate attention to pieces, something harder to do with a 10,000 word opus.
And what about El Person's (excuse me if I'm remembering wrong) idea about an MCC newsletter? That would be in addition to the regularly scheduled stuff, though the mechanics of how we'd manage a newsletter I haven't thought about. (E.g. how often do we release one? How do we make sure we have enough content each issue?)
Which reminds me: Giants/baseball-related works are welcome and happy, of course, but I'm assuming that most of us will be contributing non-baseball pieces. So no pressure either way to write Giants stuff or not.

But, of course, if there are enough people eventually, submission expansion is necessary.
Critique guidelines would be great. I also think that maybe (I don't know if yahoo! would support a links page) a links, or internet resources page would be good that people could use to find good sites about writing, the how tos and the how don'ts and so on.
I'll look back on some of my old syllabi and get back later with possible helpful guidelines, but these have been my thoughts so far.

How open will you be to later additions to the group? I am interested, as fiction writing is on my entirely-too-long list of hobbies. However, my winter and early spring are filled with a variety of Important Commitments. I wouldn't be able to contribute or critique for a few months.

Instead, if the scheduled critiques are adopted (and it seems like it will be), I suppose newbies will be added at the end of a critique cycle or to a week with a relatively light load (if someone submitted bawdy limericks about Zito, fr'instance).
2. Critiquing others on a limited basis.
Yeah, this is going to be a trickier issue. Probably, the best way to go is with an honor system -- try to participate as much as your time and energy warrants, and if you can't for understandable reasons, no one should hold it against you. But always remember about the Karmic Wheel. </joking>

Re: OT: MCC Writing Group is a GO
My idea is to choose one person per week. This person can post as much stuff as they want (realizing, of course, their turn will cycle through again). Each member therefore required to give one bit of feedback per week, even if it is just a couple of lines. Anything more than this might turn into an activity trap, especially if more members join.
