Nothin'.

Nothin'. A quick Google News search brings up:

  • The 2007 offense sucked because Marc Trestman was in charge.
  • Chris Hook is now the AA-ball pitching coach for the Milwaukee organization.
  • The Chico Outlaws traded for Julian Benevidez.
  • Some guy thinks Kevin Mench might interest the Giants. Makes sense. You don't just want to hand someone the seventh outfielder's spot without a spring training battle. The more competition the better.
  • David McCarty proofreads his wife's romance novels.
Nothin'.

Yep. Reaaaal exciting days here for a baseball blog. Whoever had December 21st in the Grant Runs Out of Ideas Pool, collect your winnings.

Steve Decker got promoted to manage the Giants' single-A affiliate after a very successful stint in Salem-Keizer with the rookie short-league team. Remember Steve Decker? I always liked that guy. Just thought that this fit with the theme.

Also, I collect board games. Yeah, I said it.

Question:  I've got a bit of spending money in these pockets of mine, and have become increasingly tempted to "upgrade" my console (PS2).  I'm a Sony guy through and through and I really think Blue-Ray is gonna kick everyone's ass...but damn...I'm not to high on buying something that MIGHT be teh titties when there's something else out there that's HOT now.

PS3 or XBox 360?  Help!!!

Re: Nothin'.
My personal opinion:

I was/am a PS2 slut.  Greatest library of games ever.  Ok, that might be a little bold, but the PS2 had pretty much everything you could want.  The library of games is the reason I bought a 360 instead of a PS3.  Currently, the PS3 library is...well, shit basically, whereas the 360 library is pretty stacked.  Exclusives on each system that matter:

PS3:
Ratchet & Clank
Resistance: Fall of Man
Heavenly Sword (a 5 hour game)
Maybe some others that I can't think of

360:
Dead Rising
Gears of War
Viva Pinata
BioShock
Crackdown
Mass Effect

All-in-all, I think the 360 has more games, better games, and better exclusives.  At some point, I will buy a PS3, but not until the price drops and the library is fleshed out better.

As for the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD thing, I don't think either are really going to win.  At some point soon, hopefully, media will go the way of the dinosaur and everything will be streamed directly.  Someone who is more tech savvy than me would know more about that type of thing though.

Re: Nothin'.
I think you're on to something here, but it will be interesting to see if people will be able to get away from having a tangible item to point to and say, "I own that movie."  Plus, there's all the extra features that go along with getting/renting a movie, including deleted scenes, blooper reels, behind the scenes, etc.  As the technology evolves, I'm sure those things will be available too, but I really wonder how the tangible will affect the streaming/download market.

As for Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD, I wouldn't concern myself with either product.  Since half the movie studios support Blu-Ray and half support HD, you're going to lose out either way.  So either get a combo player or just get a DVD Upconverter and wait for the Format Holocaust to sort itself out.  I'd recommend the latter.  Especially since prices are still too high.

Re: Nothin'.
I'm watching Billiards Trick Shot Championships on TV right now. Mark Massey went out in the quarterfinals, and Stefano Pelinga is facing Tom Rossman in the $30,000 final. This stuff is CRAZY! I love watching trick shot competitions.

On a small table I often challenge friends to a version of the tiebreak in which I put anywhere between $5 and $20 on a corner pocket. They can place the cue wherever they want, but they have to hit five rails and each rail at least once. If they can get the cue to REST on the money, they can keep it.

Nobody's made it yet, but I've almost seen it happen 100 times.

The coolest trick shot I ever made is pretty simple but really really hard. Place two balls side to side on the second diamond in the center of the table. Start with the cue ball in THAT side of the table, behind the second diamond. Just bank it off the far rail, split the two balls, and pocket each one. I made this shot the first time I ever set it up, and I've only come close to making it again once, and that wasn't even that close.

My favorite trick shot has to be the Mark Masse 16 foot jump into a boot. Completely insane. Youtube it if you can.

A couple weeks ago I learned how to put right and left Masse on the ball. I still suck at it, but I can do it 60% of the time with varying degrees of curve.

I roll with a Homer Simpson cuestick.

Re: Nothin'.
Well, any chance the Giants had at trading a pitcher to the Reds for Encarnacio or Votto, or both in a big deal just hit the skids, as the Rangers this afternoon sent highly-regarded pitching prospect Edinson Volquez to the Reds for CF Josh Hamilton, who was talked about quite a bit around here before Sabean added Aaron Rowand to his crowded outfield.  I don't see why the Reds would want Lowry or even Sanchez now when they have already snagged another team's pitching prospect.  Besides, they are still focused on getting Bedard, so they would use their remaining valuable chips for him as long as there was still a chance at him, rather than talk any more to the Giants.

Ah, the list of potential trading partners keeps getting smaller and smaller while Sabean gazes at his navel.

by Buck Henry on Dec 21, 2007 2:51 PM PST reply actions

Re: Nothin'.
Volquez throws nice and hard, and strikes out his share, but he walks too many.  I'd have traded for him had he been available, but I like Hamilton all right himself.  He'll certainly hit better than Rowand, though absent the defense.

It makes you think Sanchez would have fetched Hamilton as well.  I might have done that trade, much as I like Sanchez as well.  Hamilton isn't a good defender, but I would have loved seeing him in left and actually hitting.

Sure, then you have a nine-hundredth OF, but this one is cheap, years from arbitration and knows how to hit.  Perfect for LF.

Again Sabean is an idiot..

Re: Nothin'.
Just the other day I wondered where Julian Benavidez was, and lo, I get my answer. Benavidez went to my current college. We're rock stars, so you see.

Are the romance novels in this post smutty? If not I am not interested.

Hobbies...a good way to dovetail into mine, from the smut part. I enjoy writing graphic gay smut in my free time, though lately I have branched out into heterosexual fiction. Some smutty, some not. I'm currently kicking the tires on an idea for a screenplay. The story is a romantic comedy that doesn't suck, sort of like Bridget Jones' Diary except it's a lot more cynical, the heroine doesn't get the guy at the end of the day, and there's copious amounts of cake. I also enjoy making fun of Brian Sabean in my free time.

I'm a cook but we already know that.

I do beadwork here and there. One of my long gestating projects is a Giants rosary. Making the cross part has stymied me because I don't know how to make it. I thought about stitching rows of black and orange beads on a cross-shaped template but I haven't yet figured out the logistics on it.

I read books. Sometimes. Really. Currently reading The Omnivore's Dilemma because everyone and my mom at my school is going OMGWTFBBQ about the book. It's pretty good, plus has some humor. The author expounds upon corn sex, and how the current corn crop we eat and basically live on evolved from a stubborn wild grass that couldn't reproduce on its own. It took some human stumbling by, and splitting it open, thinking "hey this might be good to eat," for it to evolve into the modern corn plant. Good read so far.

Nate Schierholtz
I am using my "Player Comp Utility" to run some similarity scores on the young outfielders in the MLB to see which once have the most similar offensive skills.  All OFers are lumped together for players 25 years old and younger.  The Giants player I have involved in the study is Nate Schierholtz.  His three closest comps of players 25 years of age and younger, using 2008 ZIPS projections are...
  1. Delmon Young (Min)
  2. Anthony Webster (Tex)
  3. Jason Pridie (Min)
Stats used in the similarity score were HR,BB, and K rate.  There are still a couple of teams without ZIPS out, so the leaders could change.  There weren't too many young OFers similar in offensive rate skills to Schierholtz due to his below average HR and K rate and his awful BB rate.

Re: Nothin'.
In all seriousness, I think Sabean is open to another 2 years of Pedro's dismally low OBP if he can get a run-producing bat for 1B.  It appears that Sabean is focusing on 1B now, and in the event he can get a better bat for 1B than an Ortmeier/Aurilia platoon, he would then bring Pedro back for the 2-year deal, at a price that looks good for a 20 HR gold-glover.

None of us may like a batting order that only has a Roberts/Rowand/Winn outfield and a new 1B, but Sabean may feel that as long as he can keep most of his starting rotation intact, such a team with better defense and significant ABs for Schierholtz as the fourth outfielder will do fine until the trading deadline.

Some of their players seem pretty good(including Wade's son, Steve Boggs, and Todd Gossage, who can play 3rd.)
