Under the radar moves ...

Would like to identify a few players that the Giants should target.  This is intended to identify some underrated, lesser known players ... not big free agents or unrealistic trade candidates.

My list starts with:

Dan Johnson (oak) 1b ... trade candidate
Xavier Nady (pit) 1b/of ... trade candidate
Andy Marte (cle) 3b ... trade candidate
Justin Huber (kc) 1b ... trade candidate
Brian Barton (cle) of ... rule 5 draft pick
Kendry Moralez (laa) 1b ... trade candidate
Scott Thorman (atl) 1b ... trade candidate
Alberto Callaspo (arz) 2b ... trade candidate
Dallas Mcpherson (laa) 3b ... trade candidate

additional guys?
Im trying to identify guys that, for various reasons, need another opportunity with another big league club.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
MLBTraderumors says the Devil Rays are considering Brian Barton.  I'd like for us to take a flyer on him, hopefully he can make it to us . . .

I like the X-Man as a Giant...  Cal boy from Salinas.
If Brad Hennesy had Steve Kline's attitude you'd get Rob Nen... without the triple digit heat.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
The problem with Nady is that he's pretty much Randy Winn.  Maybe a little bit more pop in the bat, but really we don't need another one.
Pedro Feliz: Marginally better this year.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
He hits lefties well, how about platoon him at 1B with Geoff Jenkins?

Re: Under the radar moves ...
but see we already have too many platoons that "should" happen.  I'd rather not bring in any more mediocrity to the team, especially one that walks as little as Nady does.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
You must have not been watching the average Giants first baseman over the last 7 years. Yeah, he doesn't walk a lot but he's a better hitter than Minor, Niekro, Sweeney, Hillenbrand, Klesko, and Aurilia.

At this point, the Giants should strive to get your so called "mediocrity" because they aren't even going to be mediocre in 2008.

The whole point of this post was maybe low-key, low-buy moves that could be made, and Nady would be a decent one. With Pittsburgh in transition, they could look to trade away guys like Nady.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
Also, looks like he might be non-tendered

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07336/838486-63.stm

The Pirates are prepared to trade outfielder Xavier Nady.

And, if they cannot do so within the next few days, according to one official with direct knowledge of their plans, they are considering non-tendering him before the Dec. 12 deadline to offer salary arbitration. That would allow him to become a free agent.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
I'm the king of self-replies, if someone like Ensberg and Nady are both non-tendered, I'd try to pick them up if I were the Giants.

Nady should be pretty inexpensive, seeing as he made less than $3M last year.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
Nady wouldn't be a bad option on the team i just really don't care about him and his mediocrity.  If we are going to suck, we might as well suck without another extra body.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
We don't need another one, but we could use one if he plays 1B for a cheap 1-year deal (as opposed to the congested outfield on an expensive multi-year deal).
Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
I really hope we somehow get Marte.  I don't see it happening, because I don't think Cleveland is going to give up on him yet (they seem like a smart organization and know better than to sell low), but that's the type of thing we should be doing this offseason, in my opinion.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
What kind of player would we have to give up for Marte? Will Hennessey be enough? Sanchez? Lowery? What about a free Roberts and/or Aurilia And/or Durham?

Re: Under the radar moves ...
I could see Cleveland valuing guys like Roberts and Aurilia in a Marte deal, but we'd have to give up something a bit more enticing (read: youth) along with one of them. Lowry is too much, so too is Sanchez perhaps.  Hennessey might do the trick...

Re: Under the radar moves ...
I read that Marte may wind up going to Pittsburgh as part of a Jason Bay package. I certainly would like to take a chance on Marte, but I wouldn't give up too much. He's shown just about nothing in parts of three years in the majors, and now he's going on about 300 atbats.

Pitching
Would expect SF to take a flier on a pitcher in the Rule 5 draft. Possibilities: Randor Bierd and "Che" Guevara. Another under the radar guy could be Delwyn Young of the Dodgers.

Re: Under the radar moves ...
I want Jamie D'Antona in the Rule 5:
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/D/Jamie-DAntona.shtml
Plays 3B, but apparently he's not the best defender there, but he also plays 1B and has caught a little... I think he plugs into the lineup next year at all three positions.

Kendry Morales looks interesting... but I'm not too big on Andy Marte or Brian Barton. I think we already have a few Brian Barton's, and I don't think the ceiling is very high on Marte. Unless you compare him to what we've got....

Re: Under the radar moves ...
I have to admit that this amazing analysis is from looking at stats, nothing more. I know nothing about Marte's defense or what scouts have said about him.
