Interest in Tony Clark

ESPN Rumor Central Link

West Coast for Clark? Tony Clark | Diamondbacks | Interested: Giants? Mariners? The Mariners and Giants both have interest in switch-hitter Tony Clark, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. Clark hit 17 homers in 221 at-bats last year in Arizona, but the Diamondbacks decided to move in a different direction after they couldn't reach agreement with Clark on a two-year deal. Seattle might have a spot for Clark after trading Ben Broussard to Texas. San Francisco, which is currently looking at a combination of Rich Aurilia and Dan Ortmeier at first base, could also be in the market for an upgrade. Add Pedro Feliz at 3rd & we got young players blocked across the diamond! Job well done Brian.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
Well Clark wouldn't be more than a 2 year deal. Who exactly would he be blocking? I'd prefer a better option, but Clark has proven he can be useful in the past
Frandsen for 3B (til July 08)

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
Agree.

I'm not a big fan of Clark, who shouldn't be anything more than a bench player or spot starter. He's hasn't been a full-time starter since 2001.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
I just looked at his 2007 splits and I'm intrigued.  He's pretty much sucked until going nuckin' futs in Sept/Oct last season.  2006 was a bust.  Is he getting over a nagging injury or something?

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
My vague impression is that he's one of those good teammate types who would make a decent backup first baseman/pinch hitter and might be worth it on a one-year deal, basically on the theory it would be one more nail in the bring-back-Feliz coffin (you wouldn't see Pedro as an occasional first baseman then and Aurilia would be the utility player for the other infield positions). But it would reduce the impetus for any Durham for Sexson deal, if indeed that isn't a total mirage. So my bottom line, pick him up if he's so dirt cheap and short term you wouldn't mind simply dropping him but otherwise keep your powder dry and see what develops in the spring.

I can really see this happening.  Hope it doesn't though---first base is the only way that Schierholtz will see any ABs next year.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
They might be thinking they'll need Aurilia at 3B, especially if they think Durham is done and Frandsen is needed at 2B.

Personally, if I have to pick a posion I prefer Clark 1B/Aurilia 3B over Feliz 3B/Aurilia 1B

Clark is two years removed from am OPS+ of 154 and lit up at the end of last season, I'd say that's more upside than pretty much any infielder on the roster.  That said, I'd prefer Konerko.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
He's a little like Aurilia, except without the warm fuzzies from his last stint with the team. Maybe more like Ryan Klesko version 2.0.

As far as the 154 OPS+ - more than 20 points higher than any other season - that just screams "career year".

And, even if he does bounce back, how many more good years can he have in him? This is the anti-rebuilding option. (De-building?)

I was actually thinking about this possibility the other day. The good thing is that, since he's big and tall, he kind of LOOKS LIKE a middle of the order hitter.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
This would be awesome. Think about it - with Clark and Pedro on board, we could be the first team in history to field an entire infield of guys with sub-.300 OBPs.

Awesome!

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
Do my eyes deceive me or do people really want Tony Clark to be our starting first baseman? Are we that desperate? I'd rather let Ort (who I really, really don't like at 1B) play.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
I agree.  This would be just another friggin patch, which would be exactly the opposite of the stated objective this offseason.  Another old part time player who could very well flop.  Didn't we try this with Roberts, Aurilia and Klesko last year.  THAT worked out well, didn't it?  I really shouldn't get so exercised about trade rumors, but this is so like the Giants of late it got me going.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
I want to state clearly and without qualification: I do not want Tony Clark, Pedro Feliz or any other weak hitting corner infielder at any time in my Giants watching career or, in fact, my entire life.  Those lame-o's represent a dangerous and destructive shortcut that no GM should ever sign.
Thank God that's over.

This has to be a joke. I would be pissed if the Giants went after Tony Clark 3 years ago much less now. I think the media just assumes the Giants are interested in all available players older than 30. Most of the time because they are.

Also had a good laugh at this guy's post on that site:

"If he's healthy, he'd be the bargain the Giants are hoping for to fill a dire need. But I still think they should be pursuing Cincy's 3B Keppinger in exchange for a couple pitchers like Sanchez & Lowry or Misch. That would give them a 3-4-5 of Keppinger, Molina & Rowand that should give opposing pitchers something to fear."

I hope the Giants let this rumor pass like they did with Miggy T and others. I would hope their efforts would be for a third baseman, even if they have to pay a little more, but not a lot more. It seems finding a good third baseman is like trying to find a good bass player.

Honestly, who would he really be blocking?  Seriously, I don't think we should really hold our breaths for a Dan Ortmeier led resurgence.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.  The Giants have exactly two position players who need to be given their chance right NOW.  Schierholtz and Frandsen need to get their ABs this year, and if Sabean blocks either of them with the Tony Clarks of the world, I'll be pissed.  Otherwise, I honestly don't care.

Honestly, there HAVE to be better options out there than picking up Tony Clark.  That's what would bother me about this, is just the idea of throwing in the towel and going right back to using cagey veterans instead of taking a chance with a younger player, be he internal, via trade, or a free agent someone else lost faith in.

Tony Clark = Status quo, and I'm tired of the status quo.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
If it's not Ortmeier, it has to be someone who can help the Giants longer term. Hoping for one year of bounceback from a 36-year-old Clark is one thing, but the odds that he'll still be useful in 2009 or 2010 are much smaller.

Better.

Interest in Tony Clark !?!?!?!?!?!?!!?????

That's the ticket.

Actually, I'd rather see him than Klucko but I'm all for letting Ortmeier make 50 errors at 1B while he learns how to hit. Or fails miserably and gets DFAd at the all-star break. In which case I'm sure Clark or someone Clarklike (see Dick Pole posts below) will be available.

Re: Interest in Tony Clark
No thanks. He'd be an ok stopgap, but we already have Aurilia to play part time with Ortmeier & so unless we offload him i don't see the point. There's nothing wrong with getting a "good" 1B to replace Ortmeier (who i'm not that high on) but i don't see the logic in just getting a stop gap to replace him.

Unless you move Aurilia to be the stop gap at 3B in which case there are better options out there, such as McPherson or Ensberg.
