We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...

We could pry Josh Willingham from the Marlins.

Hear me out. With the trade that sent Cabrera and Willis to the Tigers, the Marlins grabbed some nice position players... most specifically Cameron Maybin and Mike Rabelo. With these additions, the Marlins now have two very serviceable catchers and a glut of young talented outfielders. Where does this leave Josh Willingham?

As it sits right now, Willingham is the starting left fielder. However, the Marlins may want to make room to start Cody Ross, a 26 yr old outfielder who hit .335 with 12 home runs in only 66 games last year.

Now, I know the last thing we need is more outfielders. But Willingham plays a pretty good C, a position where we could possibly want to get younger. This would also make Molina expendable, and a proven catcher is a hot commodity in today's market.

Now, this would take some shrewd bargaining by Sabean (which means this will NEVER happen), but here's my plan...

Sanchez (and Hennessey?) to Marlins for Willingham (and other?)
Lowry and Molina to the Reds for Votto or Encarnacion and a prospect.

Now, this is all pure speculation, and feel free to rip me apart, but it seems like this could work. Let me know what you think.

Alright, I wholeheartedly approve of this message.  Unfortunately, prying willingham from the Marlins is going to take more than sanchez and hennessey.

Also, Votto does not equal Encarnacion.  We'd have to add something to the two for votto and we'd have to get something else back for the two for encarnacion.

Elsewise, wishful thinking and I like the idea, but it ain't happening.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
Totally agree that it's not happening, but I think Willingham could be had for the two... maybe throw in a low level prospect. I've heard a few times (don't ask me to quote it) that the Marlins are high on Sanchez. Also, the Marlins have been pretty accommodating trade partners the last few years (see Benitez, Armando). Thirdly (not a word, I know), with Hermedia, Ross, Maybin, and Willingham, they could afford to get rid of one.

I'm not sure what it would take to get Votto, but I'm almost thinking that Encarnacion would be better for us, given that he fills a position of super-need.

as opposed the huge surplus we have at 1B?

I would much much much rather have votto.  So would the reds though.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
yea id way rather have votto.  encarnacion is a head case and 1st is as baren as 3rd.  ort+aurilia<frandsen+aurilia.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
Encarnacion is not a headcase, he's a young, league average third baseman that is currently hugely undervalued by his current team.

Votto is just better talent wise, but I think all else equal, Encarnacion would make the better acquisition.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
encarnacion's hustle, effort, and attitude have been routinely questioned. 3rd baseman or not, he's not someone who fits the giro's new plan

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
yeah and from watching and listening and reading, it seems like only the Reds organization thinks that.  And I wouldn't blame him, the way they treated him.

Also, I really could give a crap about his hustle, effort and attitude.  He's talented and talent wins ballgames.

Seriously, if they are undervaluing him so much for such a small thing, this is exactly the kind of deal we should be making.

Willingham also plays first base as well.  I like him as a run producer, but I doubt we'd be able to acquire him . . .

2 career games at 1st base, both in 2006 in blowouts.

And 67 games at the position in the Minors.  Not too bad.  Former catchers have good hands.

Just a suggestion . . .

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
Willingham is no longer a catcher, he's another outfielder. We don't need any more friggin' outfielders. If anything, I'd ask for Mike Jacobs.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
Yea, I know that we don't need any more outfielders, but who's to say that he couldn't move back to C? He's played at least a few games there every year before last, and he also could play 1B, like SLO said.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
Very creative, but there is a reason they moved Willingham off of catcher, I don't think he has the arm to gun down runners and his receiving skills were just OK. Am I saying that I wouldn't be for it if the Giants pulled off this trade? No, At least it would prove that they're thinking creatively.

I also agree with nostockjustbonds that I would rather have Mike Jacobs and I think I've heard that the Marlins are sour on him, but Willingham would be a nice pickup if he were moved back to catcher...or if we could install him in LF and just pretend Dave Roberts doesn't exist.

Also, as its been said by everyone already on this website, The Giants should acquire Encarnacion...it almost makes too much sense.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
He was a bad catcher. Everyone said so. Who knows, maybe everyone was wrong, but if there's one thing we know about Brian Sabean, it's that he's not going to be the guy who bucks conventional wisdom and puts a slugger with defensive issues behind the plate.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
Willingham is not yet arbitration eligable and therefore costs the Marlins nothing.  The Marlins have just as many potential quality young unproven arms as we do.  So just why would the Marlins want to trade for any of ours?  The Marlins have no interest in taking on any players that are arbitration eligable or signed for above minimum contracts.  So just what do we have that the Marlins would actually want for Josh?  I do not see a match here.

The current top of my list as trade targets are
Konerko from the WhiteSox to play 1B and Blalock from the Rangers to play 3B.

I have come to the conclusion that we are very unlikely to get  Encarnacion, Votto, or anyone else that would help us from Cincinnati with just Lowry or less pitching and we are not going to offer any more either.

I think some combination of Lowry, Sanchez, Schierholtz, Lewis, and non 40 man roster pitching prosects can yield us both Konerko and Blalock.

I think if we find a way to do these two trades the following 13 man position player roster would be pretty damm close to (if not slightly above) league average offensively.

LineUp:
Roberts LF
Winn RF
Rowand CF
Konerko 1B
Blalock 3B
Molina C
Frandsen 2B
Vizquel SS

Bench:
Alfonzo or Rodriguez C
Aurilia IF
Durham IF
Davis OF
Ortmeier OF

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
I share your thoughts on Cincinnati.

The issue with Konerko is that he's the Sox's big trade chip if they chose to move him.  He's consistent, under contract at a now below market price, and could fetch them some quality prospects in return.  Which we don't really have.  They have less of a farm than we do.  So we'd have to break the bank in order to acquire him.  He is their team captain and fan favorite, if that means anything in terms of intangibles.

Blalock gets a lot of attention for some of the big numbers he's put up in the past.  But what's overlooked a lot of the time is the very sexy .303/.372/.525 line at the Arlington and his horrendous .243/.301/.398 line he's put up on the road throughout his entire career.  I also get the feeling that his power would decline a lot in AT&T as well.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
Except the White Sox' lineup is pretty deadly as it is, and sacrificing Konerko for a decent starter or two would be very ideal for them because their rotation sucks ass.  They opened up a hole for themselves in the Garland-Cabrera trade.  I think they would really consider a Lowry, Sanchez or whoever for Konerko deal; he's just coming off a career worst year, he's expensive, and he's 32.  They can't really hope to expect that many prospects, and I doubt they'd get that many offers anyway.  And I don't think him being a fan favorite would stop them from pulling the trigger.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
Another point to consider is that the WhiteSox are not finding much interest on the trade market for Crede.  The WhiteSox could just keep Crede at 3B and move Field to 1B if they trade Konerko.  Then if Schierholtz is part of the deal to play LF the WhiteSox will not be losing that much on offense and will indeed be adding some of the pitching they need.  I think Lowry, Schierholtz, and a non 40 man roster pitching prospect should get this trade done.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
As much as we would like to think that Schierholtz has any kind of value to other teams - he doesn't.

Konerko is a consistent power hitter who has been a long time White Sox and they'll be asking for the same thing every other team in the league is asking for, from the Giants - Lincecum or Cain. And we're not giving those two up. We don't have any major leauge ready prospects that the Sox would covet either. We're not good trade partners with them. Konerko would work for a contending team. We're not one of those. I love the idea of having him on the team. Its just not gonna happen.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
If the WhiteSox do indeed think as little of Schierholtz as you suggest then I would be fine  with replacing Schierholtz with Winn if that is the WhiteSox's preference.  As for the WhiteSox thinking they Konerko is worth either Lincecum or Cain.  Get real, they know better and you should too.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
I know better, but unfortunately everyone tends to overrate their players and underrate the other teams players. I just don't think we have enough to pull off a deal that will satisfy the Sox. I pray that I'm wrong.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
There was a rumor about the Yankees maybe dumping Kei Igawa to them for Konerko with maybe a B-rate prospect; we have more than enough to pull it off.  Nobody's interested in him.

Re: We didn't get Cabrera, but maybe...
I do not question your stats on Blalock away from Texas.  But, if the Giants scouts think he has what it takes to suceed at AT&T and the medical staff thinks he is and will remain healthy I would still like him.  But if you are right I would not be all the pissed with just trading for Konerko and re-signing Feliz instead.
