CT left to fill

For Immediate Release
December 13, 2007

The San Francisco Giants and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are very excited and proud to announce that longtime former Major League Manager, Tom Trebelhorn, a native Oregonian, has been named as the new Field Manager of the Volcanoes for the 2008 season.

Trebelhorn, born in Portland and a graduate of Cleveland High School ('66) and Portland State University ('70), began his professional playing career by signing a free-agent contract with Hawaill of the Pacific Coast League.  During Trebelhorn's career he played in the Northwest League for Bend, Walla Walla, and Lewiston. He also played in Birmingham, Alabama and Burlington, Iowa.

"Treb" began his managing in 1975 and 1976 in Boise, 1977 in Modesto, 1979 in Batavia, NY, 1982 with AAA Portland Beavers, 1983 in Hawaii and 1985 in Vancouver, B.C..  Trebelhorn made his major league managerial debut with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1986, and was their skipper thru 1991.   During this time, he was second on the Brewers all-time managerial list for games (819), and wins (422).   He was named the 1987 Manager of the Year by Baseball America and Sports Illustrated.

In 1992, Tom joined the Chicago Cubs as their Bench Coach and Offensive Coordinator, and then was named Manager of the Cubs in 1994.   Tom joined the Baltimore Orioles in 1996, and spent the last 12 years in various coaching positions within the Orioles system, including the past 7 seasons with the Orioles' Major League Club.

"Tom brings a vast wealth of playing, coaching and managing experience to the Volcanoes," said Volcanoes co-owner Jerry Walker.  "We're excited to have someone with such an extensive coaching background, including many years at the big league level, to guide the Volcanoes -- imagine a former Major League Manager of the Year managing here in Salem-Keizer," concluded Walker.  Bobby Evans, Director of Player Personnel for the San Francisco Giants said, "We feel Tom is a perfect fit for the Giants philosophy of player development.  Assigning Trebelhorn to Salem-Keizer is a sign of our continued commitment to develop players in Salem-Keizer and to the Volcanoes organization.
"Tom will be a tremendous asset to the Giants minor league system.  Our players will benefit from his years of experience both in player development and at the Major League level.  I know the fans in Salem-Keizer will enjoy having him with the Volcanoes,"
concluded Evans.

Tom is married to Elizabeth and has four grown children.   For many years, he has taught school in the Portland area during the off-season.

Steve Decker, who guided the Volcanoes to Back to Back Northwest League Championships in 2006 and 2007, has been promoted within the Giants minor league system.  Decker's new assignment will be announced soon by the team.  "We're very excited to have Tom Trebelhorn as our new skipper," said Volcanoes co-owner Bill Tucker.  "The Giants have replaced quality with quality -- Treb will be perfect for the Volcanoes!"

If you just copy/paste the link into a comment here, everything should be cool. In general, it's best to post excerpts of articles rather than entire transcripts, but you can avoid 99.999% of problems (most of which just involve having the Diary deleted) just by providing a link.

I said "just" like 57 times in that comment. I think I might have a problem....

Re: CT left to fill
Shouldn't it be fair to assume that posting a press release verbatim wouldn't ruffle anyone's feathers?  I find it hard to imagine that the Giants are going to get all upset that someone has further disseminated their press release, what with it being a press release and all.

Re: CT left to fill
Well, I'm just speaking generally. Err on the side of caution and all that because I don't know what falls under what copyright rules. Whenever I see something copied in whole, it's the first thing that comes to mind. You certainly make sense, and not providing a link is never going to cause actual problems (unless you think of diary deletion as a real problem), but I'm thinking of copyright more like a turn signal: you don't always have to use it, but it's a good habit regardless.

Press releases are cool. I'm a kind of press. Sort of.

Chat Transcript?
I think the BA Chat Transcrip download from yesterday might be more of a problem than this.

Re: CT left to fill
Trebelhorn certainly seems like a perfect choice. I've long wanted to upgrade our minor league coaching roster, and this would appear to be a terrific step in that direction.

Hmm; I wonder if JT Snow would consider managing somewhere in the future?

Maybe
Can't argue with Trebelhorn's credentials.  Is a former MLB Manager going to want to do the teaching that a minor league skipper needs to do?  It seems to me that our best minor league managers recently have been Steve Decker and Roberto Kelly, both newbies when they were hired.

Re: CT left to fill

With apologies for thinking like this, but I wonder who's sitting in the scrap heap for the Giants to send to Ct.
