BA's Giants Organizational Report

Baseball America has their Giants Top Ten Prospects list up:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/features/265340.html
Big suprise for me Erik Threets having the best changeup. Very suprised.

On the opening page of baseball america they have a picture of Big V and Felipe Alou saying that Big V reminds him of Andres Galaragga.

I don't have a BA account so no chat transcript. (Poor college student). :(

Best Slider: Steve Edlefsen

I'm not gonna lie, I don't know who that is.

Hm, I guess he pitched for the Volcanoes last year.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
I will admit that i had to look him up, too. Looking at his numbers, his slider might be nice, but his control looks to be terrible.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
His control will need some work, he posted a BB/9 of 9.23 in 26.1 IP at Nebraska.

He hardly pitched in college, is he a converted position player?

Edlefsen
Converted to pitching from a no-bat utility guy in college.  Gotta give credit to our scouts for finding him.  That he was drafted two rounds ahead of Andy D'Alessio will remain a mystery to me.  A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to a video of Edlefsen pitching. His delivery looks a whole lot like Adam Cowart's.  Starts from the stretch, very short, quick stride, lightning release.  Sidearm slot.  Difference seems to be that while Cowart is lucky to hit 85 MPH, Edlefsen gets his up to 92 and apparently has a great slider to go with it.  This guy could turn out to be an extraordinary setup guy.

Good info - thanks. I wonder if this is why his Baseball Cube page lists his position as SS.

Re: Edlefsen
I wouldn't necessarily say he's a no-bat utility guy.

In 2006 Edlefsen tied the school record with a six-hit game in which he completed the cycle.

Edlefsen vs Cowart
OK.  Edlefsen sets up with his front foot closer to the rubber and takes a longer stride, but the rest is strikingly similar to Cowart's motion.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
He was drafted this year around the 16th round I think and has posted some real nice numbers (a monster ground ball rate of over 4.0) in short season A-ball. He's one to keep an eye on for sure.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
That 72% GB% is amazing.  I think Andrew Miller does even better and without walking everyone who doesn't ground out, but this guy's doing it as an Nth-rounder.

If he ever learns to throw strikes, look out.  Deck stacked against him, but you never know.

Best parts:

1. Best Defensive Outfielder: Antoan Richardsonk

Is this the same as badonkadonk?

2. 2011 Rotation:
No. 1 Starter Matt Cain
No. 2 Starter Tim Lincecum
No. 3 Starter Barry Zito
No. 4 Starter Tim Alderson
No. 5 Starter Madison Bumgarner

Yes, please.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
I don't think it's so much that they project him as a reliever. Just that that's a pretty impressive rotation (you know, in a perfect world where everything goes right) and it'd be hard for him to crack that. (And they obviously rank TimA and MadBum ahead of him.)

Villalona's the first position player in over a decade to be BA's top prospect for the Giants organization.

Also, 7 of the top ten prospects are position players.

Also, this is wrong: "For the first time since 1996, the Giants must build a baseball team without Barry Bonds as their cornerstone."

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

they're not only wrong about that
but also where they say that Thrill was the last home grown all star. Matt Williams was home grown, and I think Royce Clayton might have been an all star as well. Granted, that's not exactly great shakes, but these guys should do a better job. The Giants actually drafted pretty well in the late 80's--Thrill, Williams, Remlinger, Royce, to name a few.

Re: they're not only wrong about that
I think the implication was that they were all-stars as Giants, which Williams certainly was, but those others weren't. Arguably Richie was home grown, though we got him as a minor leaguer from the Rangers. "Home Grown" is a relative term, I suppose.

Chat Tidbits
Orlando Yntema was supposed to get Henry Sosa's Augusta rotation spot until Yntema tore a tendon in his knee.  This raises the question of whether we will see Yntema this year and if he will be the Henry Sosa of 2008?

Baggerly mentioned Wilmin Rodriguez a couple of times.  I think he might be a sleeper too.

Possible High A assignment for Tim Alderson.  That would be great.  I could see him when the Little Giants swing through SoCal.

Brett Pill was put on a strength program this fall in hopes he can convert some of those doubles to HR's.

Alex Hinshaw was healthy enough to pitch in instructionals.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
It puzzled me.  For a guy with great D Bocock makes a ton of errors.

For a guy with great speed Burriss is not a very successful base stealer.

I don't see how Sandoval who is younger than Williams and was the third best catcher in baseball at gunning down base stealers is not the top defensive catcher.

I don't really see how Burriss is a top prospect at all.  He doesn't have any real stand out abilities and he hits for negative power.

I also don't get the Bowker hysteria.  He has had one decent year hitting for power in AA.  He also struck out oodles while not walking much which is a warning sign for young power hitters.  His swing isn't particularly great and he has no more than average raw bat speed.

Good to see the 'Toan finally getting some recognition, though.

Zealously advocating for Nate the Great since 2007.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
07 was a very bad year for Bocock.  In college and short season he was solid, I think 08 will tell the tale.

I'm not sure why the Burriss hysteria either.  Decent, not that strong on D and ok with a bat.  Can leg out some infield hits.

Williams best defensive catcher, they must be smoking crack.  King of the passed ball is more like it.

Re Bowker: it wasn't just a decent year, it was a superfantastic year, when you consider the Doddian context. And I wouldn't consider 103 k's in nearly 600 pa's to be "oodles." Bunches, sure. Maybe even loads. But not oodles.

And Bowker improved as he progressed into a higher level of competition which bodes very well. Continued improvement at AAA could lead into a 2008 call-up to The City.

Re: Agree
He hit really, really well away from Dodd: OPS 1.027, which would have been the best OPS in the league. The hope, then, is that he's Steven Pearce in hiding. The fear is that this was a fluke year and that his two mediocre campaigns in the Cal League speak to his actual skill level. I worry about the Cal League performance, so he didn't make my top ten, which in a system as weak for hitting as the Giants' is a real insult. He was my first honorable mention, mainly because of those otherworldly road stats this year. Fingers crossed. I'd like to be wrong.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
One thing about Burriss and the success at base stealing....stealing isn't just about speed, but also about reading pitchers (and pitches), and getting good jumps.

With Williams - there's more to defense than throwing out base stealers.  And Williams is no bad shakes at that, either.  Williams can call his own games already (the pitching staff in S-K all seemed to praise him for a lot of what they did from what I heard) and is a lot more mobile behind the plate.

With Bocock...yea, that puzzled me, too.

Well, my impressions.

-I thought the chat participation was a bit light this year. 2 and a half hours looks quite long, but a full 14 out of about 45 questions were mine using various nom de plumes, screne names and nom de guerres.  I think in previous years the chat was open to all comers and not just subscribers.

  • Coverage of issues was pretty good.  Pretty much the only standard question I didn't see answered was the 'where's the farm rank' question, but as he's indicated elsewhere that the team falls in the middle tier I guess it was superfluous.  The only substantive prospect based question I had that wasn't answered was if Threets change was so good why did he look like a gas can in his cup of coffee, but hey, he can't answer everything.
  • On one level I'm disapointed that it was Andy and not John Manuel who did the evaluation this year.  As a beat writer I think Andy is more familiar with the kids themselves, but the national staff have a better feel for the relative strenghth of a farm system and have a little better experience on projection. Andy has a tendency to collect and collate opinions of others a bit too much.  On the plus side, having one of the beat writers this familiar with the farm is really quite a boon- if you mention the Bucardo brothers to Shulmann he'd probably ask if you mix it with coke and a twist of lime. And When Andy does give an opinion, it's usually a pretty fair one, and he actually is very good about responding to polite emails.  But on some levels, it makes me wonder why I'm paying $102 a year for something I can get most of for free.
  • BA top prospect lists are all about potential and age to level. Yes, at upper levels performance enters the mix, but BA will always rank a potential #2 SP in rookie ball above a probable #3 in AAA with a cup of coffee. I tend to a more balanced approach myself maybe even skewed the opposite direction- I give serious due to anyone who has made the AA transition, but I recognize that this is provocative.
  •  The question that alarmed me the most was the report that Merkin is pitching at only 90-91 in the DWL. Reports I had from Arizona placed him at 94-95. The report was just one un-named scout, maybe he just caught Merkin when he was deadarming, but still, I'll watch him closely in sping.
  • the answer I liked most was Andy's take on the 'pitching factory' character of our farm. I myself had counted them up, but it's good to have someone else go through the exercise and come to the same conclusion that theres 15 ML pitchable arms in the system that won't fit on the top 30 list. Other plus answers were his report that Joaquin really is all the way back, English really is back from the dead and Threets isn't a lost cause.
I'll post a little more in a bit. I'm sorry for any typos but I'm doing this on a blackberry from a ski lift.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
Note to Merkin: Don't be alarmed this Spring by the stange man in the stand who seems to be following your every move.  That's prospecthound and he's merely "watching you closely".

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
I always say Valdez as overrated and fringey, before he got hurt, so I'm not too hopeful. Be nice if I were wrong, but so far not. If Joaquin is back, look out. English has, for whatever reason, always been a favorite. He was so good so young, then who knows -- I heard a lot of different things. What he did to short-season ball this last year was just unfair.

Where you skiing?  We're going up to Kirkwood in two weeks.

On another note, I'm impressed that you typed all that into your blackberry, with bullet points, no less!  I've tried posting a couple times on mine, but it's too much work.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
I was boarding at Boreal. The superpipe opened yesterday. Rode low so I did OK on the pipe, but I beefed on a mid box right after. Suck is life

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
Some of my thoughts, for what they're worth...

* Rick Ragazzo left?  Faaaack.  This is the guy who talked Sabes into the offer to Villalona.  Let's hope the new guy Ed Creech helps....but I'm not holding out for much.

* I don't have a lot of quibbles on the Top 10...I've got some differences (notably at the top, and involving a couple of older pitchers), but nothing I'd scream out about.

* D'Alessio didn't make the cut for the Top 30, but they're going to fit him in.  I would've wanted to see him say who gets the axe for Andy.  Nice to see them giving Andy some props.

* Most shocking comment: Pucetas and his 'low-80's' stuff.  Whaaa?  Maybe his slider...I've had his stuff in the low-90's.  I'm thinking it was just a typo.

  • Best comparison - Noonan = "A tooled-up version of Kevin Frandsen."
  • Most disagreed with comment: since only Nick Pereira looks to be in position to help the major league club next year when talking about rotations.  What, no love for Pat Misch?  I know he relieved most of the season, but I still like him as a starter.
* The Muni as an extreme pitcher's park?  Doesn't surprise me as much as some.  Park factors can be affected still by the pitching, in which San Jose pitchers do well, and the size of the park is enhanced by the fact that right field is turned into the wind, killing a lot of left-handed power.  John and Nate can attest to that.

* The Clinton and Star Wars jokes have bumped Andy up in my favorite chats list.  He could easily take over for Goldstein, who I don't get to see chat anymore now that he's on BP.

Re: BA's Giants Organizational Report
I still can't see what all the hand wringing about Ed Creech is all about.  He isn't the new scouting director, Barr is. He isn't even in charge of international scouting and is actually not even the number 1 guy in Latin development. Just becasue he waas in over his head running an entire system doesn't mean he can't tool around Venezuela putting a radar gun on 16 year olds.

I found the Misch omission to be glaring too- I think he's assuming that he's already part of the ML team in a comment relating to depth.
