BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects

The Giants Top Ten prospects plus various other rankings will be posted this Friday. There will also be a chat (probably Andrew Baggarly) where members can pose questions. So get your questions ready. I am very interested to see what they think of our low minor prospects

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
I'm going to assume this is a dumb question, but Andy Baggarly from BA and Andrew Baggarly from the Merc are the same guy, correct?

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
Yep.

He's moonlighting with BA, actually giving the mag some actual west coast presence.

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
why wait for the experts, who are our top prospects, in your opinion? i know about guys like denker and bowker and velez, but ive seen stats for a kid named romo in single a who struck out 105 in 60 innings...anybody know anything about him?
thank god the patriots dont have the giants' first round pick too

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
Sergio Romo is a McCC favorite for many of our favorite posters. I'm sure a comment or diary search for Romo will bring up more intelligent information on this site alone than you could find on him if you sent an FBI unit into his home to come back with a full psychological profile.

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
Romo was a 24 year old in the Cal League, which is old for the league, so he better dominate;  the average age in the league is about 23 years.  Still, dominance is better than no dominance, but I think we need to see him perform in AA and/or AAA before we get too hyped over him.

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
I'm not wild about Romo, personally, and I didn't want to say he was a general favorite around here because I think it's just a few vocal, well known posters who are on the wagon, but he has come up in conversation around here with some real frequency and some solid enthusiasm.

I'm interested to see what he does, but I do need convincing.

I missed Romo in the AFL but there I heard nothing but glowing reports about him. I want to see his 14 different arm angles for myself.

BA Top Ten Mastermind
I've played this every year.

1 point for right player, wrong place.  3 for right player, right place.

Winner gets bragging rights.

Since I've consistently been the only person who played this every year, I'm getting really sick of listening to myself brag.

Re: BA Top Ten Mastermind
  1. Angel Villalona- no doubt about it!
  2. Henry Sosa- great year moves him up this far?
  3. Tim Alderson- Limited sample size but dominant.
  4. John Bowker- huge year in Conn. Maybe?
  5. Nick Noonan- Impressed in rookie ball.
  6. Madison Bumgarner-0 stats/ At least a top 10 spot
  7. Sergio Romo- see Sosa
  8. Emmanuel Burris- recovered nicely after bad start
9.Andy D'Allessio- great #s/BA calls him too old?
10. Wendell Fairley- great potential no #s

I dunno. I took a shot. Are we wagering McCovey Bucks on this one?

Re: BA Top Ten Mastermind
Last year's top 10:

1.    Tim Lincecum, rhp
2.    Jonathan Sanchez, lhp
3.    Angel Villalona, 3b
4.    Emmanuel Burriss, ss
5.    Brian Wilson, rhp
6.    Kevin Frandsen, 2b
7.    Fred Lewis, of
8.    Nate Schierholtz, of
9.    Eddy Martinez-Esteve, of
10.    Billy Sadler, rhp

I believe that Lincecum, Sanchez, Wilson, and Frandsen have too much ML experience to be on the list again, but Schierholtz and Lewis are still eligible.

Fred had 157 AB last year; I'm pretty sure the cutoff is 130, so he's not eligible.

Re: BA Top Ten Mastermind
Hrm, I found a site that gave 300 PAs as the cutoff, but on closer reading I see that's their own threshold, not BA's. A commenter on the Sons of Steve Garvey site says 150 PAs. That would mean Lewis (and Ortmeier) aren't eligible, but Schierholtz (117 PAs) still is.

I used age and level reached as tie-breakers. For the actual rankings, I pretended to go according to a combination of draft position, performance so far and projection, but i don't really know anything about that stuff.

Joey Martinez is a personal favorite because he gave my son pitching lessons a few years ago but no way is he on any top ten list. Given his age and league, he may not be on a lot of Top 50 lists.

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
I don't think he has much of a chance, since he was still in high A at 24, but he does sport a nifty 4.5-to-1 K/BB ratio in his minor-league career.

You have to respect that.

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
My list (which is not what I think their list will be, but those who I see as having the highest present values):
  1. Schierholtz -- major-league-ready or very close, which trumps the 17-year-old who's five years away
  2. Villalona -- potential superstar, but he has a half-decade to flame out
  3. Misch -- major-league-ready end-of-the-rotation starter trumps potential pitching stars in rookie ball
  4. Tanner -- he's a long ways off, but I see him as a potential poor man's Andrew Miller
  5. Sosa -- worries about his walk rates push him down; top-3 if he develops control
  6. Bumgarner -- purely on potential; handedness trumps Alderson's stuff
  7. Noonan -- his bat is real, but needs to stick in the middle infield
  8. Fairley -- purely on potential; need I mention how weak the system is?
  9. Alderson -- clearly outclassed rookie ball, but almost no track record
  10. Sandoval -- not usually mentioned, but if he can catch, he should be; no star, but handled high-A at age 21 and showed developing power
HM: Bowker, Velez, Culberson, Pichardo, Denker

Notable omissions:  Manny Burriss and Eugenio Velez -- No-pop Manny and strike out Eugenio.  Manny in particular would make my top 20, although I'm skeptical.

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
This went nowhere on my original post. For the benefit of those readers who lack the interest or patience to read the entire prospect analysis, I have summarized my ranking below. As an added bonus, since I have the 25th Anniversary Edition of Animal House playing while I write this, I have assigned to each of the prospects their Delta Tau Chi pledge name. You'll need to read the full article to understand many of them, but not all.

The Top 30 List

  1. Nate Shierholtz Age 24 Exp 4- MLB (`Swinger")
  2. Angel Villalona Age 17 Exp1 - A- ("Babyphat")
  3. Henry Sosa Age 22 Exp 2 A+ ("Hammer")

..must say, I love English as 'Zombie' -- but then I have long argued on the Giants newsgroup that the team needs to bring back the zombified corpse of Carl Hubbell.

He'll teach the kids to throw strikes.

i dont think Noonan, Burriss, Velez, Sandoval or Bowker belong in any Top 10's and not sure the point in listing Schierholtz (or Misch, F.Lewis,etc.)

maybe Noonan at 10(probably shouldnt have included him), but Bowker is still a stretch off of 1 good year...

ok, could see him at 9-10 i guess...thought there was more to choose from...Bowker was almost off the map before last year

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
you're right..more difficult than i thought..

ill try  #1 - Villalona
          2 - Alderson
          3 - Bumgarner
          4 - H. Sosa
          5 - W. Fairley
          6 - S. Romo
          7 - Tanner
          8 - W. Joaquin
          9 - B. Snyder
         10 - Noonan

  also K Pichardo...

might look better with Bowker at #9 though

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
Well, I meant more in the upper minors, if slojoe apparently thought that neither Noonan nor Bowker were anywhere near our top 10 prospects. I think the lower levels of our minor league system look very nice, but we'll have to see where that goes. I'm actually pretty happy with how our minor league system is rebuilding itself, but it's all a few years away.

I guess we're going to have to agree to agree then. I think the farm is pretty deep, but the impact players are all in A ball, mostly low A.

But Noonan?  What's not to like?

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
BA's list, but definitely not mine:
  1. Angel Villalona - BA still nut themselves over him.
  2. Tim Alderson - At least one guy at BA was nutting all over him, too.
  3. Nate Schierholtz - Close to the majors earns this spot, but it wouldn't shock me if he falls down a few spots.
  4. Henry Sosa - I'm not nearly this high on him, but BA loved the step forward he took this year.
  5. Madison Bumgarner - Too much talent to not place high.
  6. Wendell Fairly - Too young to not place high.
  7. Clayton Tanner - Youth again moves up.
  8. Wilber Bucardo - I'm going for the surprise guy here.
  9. Ben Snyder - Hopefully his HWB performance didn't hurt him.
  10. Pat Misch - Too close, and too good looking to ignore.

Wendell Fairly isn't too young, at least not compared to some of the other players on your list.  He'll be 20 years old before next season starts.

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
1 - Villalona. No Brainer
2 - Sosa. Henry, not Carlos
3 - Bumgardner.
4 - Alderson. I think BA loves this draft.
5 - Noonan.
6 - Schierholtz. I'm not sure he qualifies in BA's mind
7 - Tanner. Young and Left handed.
8 - Bowker. Could be as high as 4.
9 - Fairley.
10 - Burriss.

I think I love this draft, and that's without Bumgarner or Fairly taking the field. I'm just silly irrational about Alderson, and Noonan's showing was impressive for a kid right out of high school.

Noooooooooooooooonan!

I'm happy to be the assistant conductor on the Noonan train! If he doesn't pan out, I'm going to be pretty disappointed. I don't think I can be the main conductor of the train because I don't follow the minors particularly well, and I think conductor's been called already.

But I can totally assist. Watch:

Noooooooooooooooonan!

That's the sound of the horn on the Noonan Train. All aboard!

I kept thinking you were yelling Noooo! out of frustration.

Then I would read the rest of the post and be like "Well that's pretty positive.  Why is he yelling no?"  Then I would go back to the top and restart this process.

I think I did this about six times.  I am so smart.

Guess for BA
  1. Villalona
  2. Schierholtz
  3. Bumgarner
  4. Sosa
  5. Alderson
  6. Noonan
  7. Velez
  8. Fairley
  9. Bowker
  10. Tanner
Also, after the BA list is posted, we could each total up our own points and post them to make compilation easier.

I didn't think this was worth its own diary and this is kind of sort of related to prospects, so:

After loving on Dick Tidrow in the other diary for allegedly nixing the Lincecum trade, I just google image searched him and HOLY SHIT I DID NOT KNOW HE WAS SO EPIC.

That's a Sal Fasano level of epic right there, people.

including someone who has yet to throw a pitch in pro ball or make a plate appearance in pro ball makes me all itchy, hence why no MadBum, Fairley, etc. Plus, I've only seen one of these guys play aside from the dudes who were with the big club (Ay-yoo-hey-nee-oh and Nate) and that was Manny B. So a lot of this is just groping around in the dark.

At times like these I really want to do a "watch for" list, just guys I find intriguing and not in the Brian Sabean way. Guys who maybe aren't OMG PROSPECT 4EVAR but interesting, and have a chance of contributing. Or at the very least, giving me something to write about. :)

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
According to BA, All players who haven't exceeded the major league rookie standards of 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched (without regard to service time) are eligible.

Schierholtz had 112 at bats this season so he is eligible.

  7. Noonan
  8. Fairley

Re: BA's Organization Top Ten Prospects
  1. Villalona - Youth + upside = BA luv.
  2. Scheirholtz - MLB ready after big year.
  3. Alderson - Youth + Stuff + Command...and those glorious few pro innings...
  4. Bumgardner - Top 10 pick
  5. Sosa
  6. Tanner - interchangable with Sosa IMO.
  7. Noonan - Great pro debut with all-around game. Not that much older than Big V.
  8. Fairley - Crazy tools, gotta be top 10.
  9. Burriss - Bounced back in low A, but a little one-dimentional.
  10. Misch - MLB ready lefty.
  11. Sandoval - One of my favs, but couldn't sneak him in.
Pretty confident in this list. 10-20 are all very close, so I can't go much further with as much confidence. The system is suddenly looking very strong.

After a superb 2007 season at AA John Bowker should receive plenty of attention. Here is to hoping he builds upon his 2007 breakout season and gets a call up to The City this year.

We should pawn off Sosa. He's overvalued by BA and was in the futures game, I think his value is as high as it's ever going to be right now.
