Joe Nathan?!

From ESPN's Rumor Mill:

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that closer Joe Nathan could be traded to the Brewers in the coming weeks. The Brewers just lost closer Francisco Cordero, who signed a four-year, $46 million free-agent deal with the Reds. Nathan, 33, is set to become a free agent after the 2008 season. The Twins could replace him with either Pat Neshek or Juan Rincon. If Nathan becomes available, the Giants -- Nathan's original team -- are considered to be another team that would pursue him.

Not sure if this would be in our best interest, but have to say... I'd love to have Joe Nathan back on the team.  Just gotta keep pipelining young talent to Minnesota.  How about Lowry for Nathan?

How about Nathan, Liriano and Boof for Bengie Molina?

No way man. He's just so clutch. When was the last time Liriano batted .704 with runners in scoring position?

Re: Joe Nathan?!
If we're trading Lowry, it better only be for hitting.  Otherwise it just doesn't make sense.

Plus, since we're rebuilding, there's no point in acquiring Nathan.  I'd rather just let Wilson do the job.

Yeah, I agree with that. I like Nathan, would love to have him back, but trading for him doesn't make sense under current circumstances.

I'm afraid I don't agree with that.

I'm not sure what I don't agree with anymore, but I definitely know I am adamantly opposed.

In terms of chemistry puns
Worse than having a mnemonic device the lets you remember the difference between cations and anions... because CATions are PAWSitive?

Re: In terms of chemistry puns
well at least that mnemonic is useful.

I always just remembered that an- is a negative prefix; therefore, it anions have a negative charge.

yeah i used 8th grade english to help in 11th grade chem.

Re: In terms of chemistry puns
I remember it because the "t" in cation looks like a plus sign.

Oh, and I have a phd in biochemistry - and you know what?  It hardly matters to remember which were anions and which were cations.  Everyone once in a while, when you are considering transporter classes.

Re: In terms of chemistry puns
It will ALWAYS be useless to me, unless I'm somehow ever on Jeopardy and they somehow have a question about positively charged ions... but what are the chances that will ever happen?

Still, I'll never forget the difference because my 11th grade biology teacher made a cat paw gesture while teaching us about them, and that image will always be with me.

Knowing a little Latin can help you with a ton of stuff. The periodic table of elements was easier for me to learn once I started thinking of the Latin roots of the elements' names.

Re: In terms of chemistry puns
oh man, has it helped.  I didn't even learn latin,  I can just pick out the roots in a word and kind of know what they mean and where they come from.  I've been a reader since age 3.  taught myself on my favorite book ever: Anne Can Fly.  I reccomend you pick it up.

Re: In terms of chemistry puns
Learning Latin roots in the eighth grade probably did more for my overall understanding of words than any other single event I can remember.

Tim Linecum and Matt Cain have been placed on waivers to make room for the giants most recent signings, Julio Franco and Ricky henderson. The giants seeking a power hitter, are said to be in serious negotiations with Jose Canseco.

Re: Joe Nathan?!
Nathan is 33?  Wow... doesn't feel that long ago that he had just been called up.  I remember someone from the Giants' broadcasting team mentioning something along the lines of: "This kid hasn't been pitching for very long.  You never know.  He could be The Natural."

Then we traded him for that dirty bastard who I won't mention.

Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?

Re: Joe Nathan?!
I don't like rooting against players, unless they're on the Dodgers or directly competing against the Giants, but it would really hurt if Liriano lives up to his potential.

That was the stupidest trade of all time.

Re: Joe Nathan?!
sadly, even if Liriano never throws another pitch in the majors, he provided more value to the Twins than AJ did to the Giants. :(

Re: Joe Nathan?!
The A.J. trade is now water under the bridge.  I'm rooting for all three ex-Giants -- especially Liriano.

I believe Francisco had the same (Tommy John) surgery as Perkin' Merkin Valdez.  Francisco could well be back by midseason.

by sharksrog on Nov 29, 2007 12:58 PM PST up reply actions

Re: Joe Nathan?!
That would be hilarous if we traded for him. Say, Lowry + Sanchez. Essentially, we would have completely given away Boof, Liriano, Lowry, and Sanch for free, while losing 5 or so years of Nathan's prime. Good times.

by UnleashTheGore on Nov 28, 2007 4:13 PM PST reply actions

Re: Joe Nathan?!
And this is exactly why trading for Nathan would be almost as bad as the original Nathan trade.

Seriously, trading for Nathan would be so bad that angels would cry.  You can't hear it but I am stuttering just thinking about the possibility.

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Re: Joe Nathan?!
They won't do it, because they'd have to pay the man $10-12 million a year to close when they could have kept him all these years.  If the only piece left was a closer, then maybe.  But not at the price Nathan would now command.

by Buck Henry on Nov 28, 2007 4:28 PM PST reply actions

Re: Joe Nathan?!
It's perfect that Nathan is a FA after 2008. This gives the Giants a chance to see if Wilson can be the closer. If he fails, they can then throw a ton of money at Nathan and bring him back. Of course they run the risk of him being traded and signing with his new team, but it's a risk worth taking. I certainly wouldn't trade a fortune to get him right now.

Umm...has anyone considered that maybe Nathan wouldn't want to come back? I mean, he was thrown around and treated pretty shitty at times, and not really given a fair chance at succeeding here.
