Rule 5 Draft. possible players

Brian Barton, of, Indians

A five-tool player who can play all three outfield spots, Barton has been hampered by a lingering knee injury since his breakout year in 2006 when he hit .322 with 19 homers and swiped 41 bags in 49 attempts. Even with the knee problem, Barton still turned in a .305/.402/.420 season in 2007, finishing the year in Triple-A. Quiet and leading through example through his 2006 season, some scouts expressed concerns about Barton's demeanor. "I loved him that first year in Double-A," one scout from a National League club said. "But this past year, it was almost like he'd earned this elite status and you saw him have this lackadaisical approach to the game that wasn't there before. Where he was playing with chips on both shoulders with something to prove initially, that part of his game was replaced by some sort of false bravado. He's really tough to get a handle on, but the tools are very real."

I like this kid, even with the attitude. I know we don't need an another outfielder, but this kid seems to have all the stuff.

Baseball America's has a list of players it thinks have a chance at getting picked and doing well.

There is a similar article on yesterday's Baseball Prospectus:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6954

It doesn't mention Barton, but there are a few intriguing names in here as well.

How about that Colonel fella for 3B?

Baseball Cube

I can see why he'd be left exposed to Rule 5 draft, after repeating AA and then not excelling in the AFL. But he seems to "have power" "can hit lefties".  Lotsa doubles, some hrs, and has had a good OBP - "can take a walk".  In 2006 he spent time at various positions around the IF and OF.  He might be a good platoon mate or sub for Frandsen/Aurilia at 3B/1B/UtilIF since he has the "ability to club southpaws".

Re: Rule 5 Draft. possible players
Next year is a year in which the Giants can afford to keep a rule 5 prospect or two.  And they get a pretty high pick, right?
Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Re: Rule 5 Draft. possible players
Anybody know anything about Matt Whitney?  He seems a little old at 23, but he hit 32 bombs and OPSed .909 last year as a 1b in High A.
Vizquel leads by a higher level of example. --BS (Brian Sabean)

Re: Rule 5 Draft. possible players
Chris Lubanski might be worth a flyer, as might Brian Barton, unfortunately they are both OFs which we're not exactly short of. Matt Whitney and Christian Colonel are intriguing mostly because they play positions of need, being 1B and 3B respectfully. That said Im not sure the rule 5 draft if really the best route for feeling needs. Id still prefer seeing either of them at the hot corners than Rich Aurilla though.

Re: Rule 5 Draft. possible players
AA phase: Matt Whitney. Take a chance on someone with some serious power and upside.

AAA phase: Diory Hernandez
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/H/diory-hernandez.shtml
"Diory Hernandez, ss, Braves
Plus runner with easy actions; uses the whole field" - Can he field? I don't like that he got caught stealling 20 out of 42 times though. Red light!

ML Phase:
Jamie D'Antona, 3b/c, Diamondbacks
"Second straight year left unprotected, can play 1b, 3b or c"
Since he can catch and plays our two positions of most obvious need, he's got a great chance at staying on the roster all year. AND he flashed power and discipline at all three levels the last few years - what's not to like? Give him 400 AB's and, if he shows progress, a chance to start in '09. What do we have to lose? If he's a decent fielding C, he's an absolute steal. Either way, I'd rather have him as the backup than Notgard/GRod.

Re: Rule 5 Draft. possible players
doesnt look like hes actually played too many games at C, but looks an interesting prospect nonetheless.

3B?
We need a third baseman, don't we?  Why not give him a shot?  3B version of Dan Uggla?

Re: Rule 5 Draft. possible players
Thanks for the link, I'd take a chance on him. He hit a ton of 2B's last year and looks like he has some moderate pop.
