Jose Guillen?

He'll be 32 next year. There are a number who really want Fukudome or Jones, but I haven't heard Guillen named at all. If the Giants are going to pay for an outfielder with power, I don't see how Guillen doesn't deserve mention.

Here's a look at his OPS numbers against some other potential power sources for next year:

  Guillen/ Tejada/ Jones/ Sexson/ Rowand
'05 849     865    922    910     736
'06 817     878    894    842     745
'07 813     799    724    694     889

If the asking price of about 3-4 years at around 10/per is accurate, I'm saying he's someone we should consider. I'd rather have Guillen at 3/30 than Jones at 5/90! And my favorite part is that he won't cost us any players. We'd still have Lowry/Sanchez/Hennessey/Correia to try to deal for a young position player or two.

Re: Jose Guillen?
I think Guillen will get plenty of mention.

-In the Mitchell report. Stay away from Jose.

Re: Jose Guillen?
if that's your basis then stay away from everybody; half of baseball could be in the Mitchell report.  Weird way to go about things.

I'd absolutely rather see Guillen on this team than Jones, considering the contracts.

Re: Jose Guillen?
So you're not scared of a guy who's used in the last and might have to put up numbers without PEDs?

Re: Jose Guillen?
Not exactly.  But I'm a lot more scared of signing a .220 hitter to a long term contract worth close to a hundred mil.

Re: Jose Guillen?
I'd much rather take Fukudome. A team playing half its games at the Phone Booth is going to benefit way more from patient bats and OBP than from power.

Wow, Zen. I guess I should have gone for the $200 answer in this category. I'm stumped, unless there's a Mays River somewhere. Can I use a lifeline? Or buy a vowel?

Re: Jose Guillen?
A proven juicer that was using in his mid 20's. How does that sound like a good investment? I know there are going to be a ton of names in the Mitchell Report and I think it behooves the Giants to be careful about who they go after. I think that probably includes obvious users with past clubhouse personality issues.

Re: Jose Guillen?
yeah, that's the problem. It's not that he "may" be in the Mitchell report, he IS in the Mitchell report. And it wasn't just HGH, it was steroids as well. Put that with his reputation for being an ass, and why would you possibly want him?? If we wanted an ass that uses steroids, I can think of a better choice although he's much older!!!
SIGN ANDRUW JONES!!

Re: Jose Guillen?
I'd rather not sign anyone to multi-year deals before the report comes out, but Guillen has had solid production since testing started, and I'm buying into the personality crap - Bonds was supposedly an evil, steroid-chugging racist, and we were fine with him for years. I thought those issues were old news anyway (I don't remember hearing anything out of Seattle).
I'd be scared if a player like Sexson, Bay, Tejada, or Jacque Jones were on the report - players who seem to have recently and/or suddenly declined when they should be in their prime - but if we're staying away from all possible previous steroids users we should stay out of the market completely.
But, looking at the other, cheaper options out there, I still want any of them over Andruw. If signing Guillen keeps us from going after Andruw for 6/106, count me in.
As for Fukudome, I like the OBP/defense, but I don't see the Japanese, lefty-power translating well to AT&T. But if he could slug around .500, he'd be worth it.
My preference remains dealing Winn and Roberts, and giving all the AB's to Schierholtz/Ortmeier/Lewis/Davis/Velez.
