OT: McC KNBR Callers

The main reason for this diary is because I could have sworn I heard our own Goofus calling into KNBR at about 5:30 this morning.

Something about Randy Winn getting boo'd at the Warriors game. But then after the caller established credibility and the host asked his opinion on the Giants off-season thus far (mainly that Sabean has yet to do anything) there was no response outside of a "yea". I have to say I was a little disappointed for the following reasons:

  1. The opportunity to inject KNBR with some actual intelligent insight from a real Giants fan was not taken advantage of.
  2. No reference to McC.
So that brings us to the comment starter. Who amongst the Mccoven have ever called (or maybe even routinely call) into KNBR, and how did it go?

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

That's so random. Why would anyone boo Randy Winn? He's so... inoffensive.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
Considering he was probably there to support his buddy Nash, maybe he was wearing Suns paraphernalia?

Or as Goofus speculated, Ws fans are more A's fans than Giants.

I watched the Ws game on and off and didn't see it myself, just heard some talk of it on KNBR early this morning.

Warriors fans are smart.  They booed him so he will consider waiving his no trade clause.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
BTW, I spoke with Randy's brother about the limited no trade clause.  Apparently the 10 teams he can't be traded to are basically the AL and NL central divisions.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
I always think about calling in whenever I hear some moron fan call in and give his or her moron opinion, but I don't really think very quickly on my feet so I'm sure if I did call in I'd just end up sounding like a moron too.

That, and I usually listen in the car or on my lunch breaks. And I don't like being on the phone in the car, and over lunch I'd rather just eat than wait on hold for a half hour while I eat just to address something some idiot said at what will then be a half hour ago.

I would like to call in sometime, though, just to say I did it. I'm sure my moment will come.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
I called Fitz and Brooks once a month or so ago prior to the Niners game vs the Giants. I played a bunch of golf with Trent Dilfer this past year so I was calling to defend him as talk show hosts and callers were blasting him. It was my first time calling and I was a little nervous. It didnt go as well as I had planned as I sat back and let Rod talk too much after my initial point, but it was still a bit of a rush to actually get through and on the air.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
I think Rod would have talked too much even if you didn't sit back and let him do it. I like Rod because he's always supremely dedicated to putting forward the reasonable, patient opinion, but I get frustrated with him because a lot of the time he doesn't really understand what the callers are saying and just repeats himself rather than taking the time to figure it out.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
That was me on the air this morning.  Had I known McCoven were listening at 5:30am, I'd have given a shout out and flashed the McC gang signs.

Murph and and Dibbly were talking about the AP article mentioning that Randy Winn was present at the game and were saying that wasn't really noteworthy and wondering why the writer mentioned it.  They also mentioned that there was a smattering of boos for Winn.  I called in with two points:

  • the writer probably mentioned that Winn was Nash's backcourt teammate at Santa Clara, but it got edited out.
  • the boos were probably from A's fans simnply booing him because he's a Giant...the stepchild complex.
Murph acknowledge both points and then segued into how quiet the Giants have been.  I didn't feel like getting into the Lincecum/Cabrera thing, so just gave him a "yup", as in I agree (awfully quiet).

I've called in a couple of times.  Murph always remembers and mentions the "Goffus and Gallant" connection.  The most memorable was when I won tickets to see The Who in a on-air singing competition.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
I usually listen to Murph and Mac until about 6:30 am or so, when the sun comes up and I can no longer get a good signal down here in OC.

I took your "yup" to be a reflection that there are a lot of bad deals that Sabean could be making right now that so far have not been made. With every bad or marginal free agent that signs elsewhere, I breathe a little sigh of relief. It's one more bad deal Sabean won't make, and one more day where Lincecum and Cain remain Giants.  Anyway, that's what my "yup" would've meant.

No news is (more or less) good news.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
One of the few times I can remember calling KNBR was back in '83, when I called in to "SportsPhone 68", which was hosted then, I think, by Dave Newhouse.  It was right after the Joe Morgan/Al Holland-for-Mike Krukow/Mark Davis/CL Penigar trade, and they had Tom Haller on taking calls.  It seemed like everyone hated the trade and they were ripping into Haller pretty good. I actually liked the trade and called to stick up for the trade, and tell Haller he'd done good.

The last time I called was to Larry Krueger, while driving with my sons back to OC from San Diego, after a Giants-Padres game. I can't even remember why I called or what I said. Just that that my older son egged me into calling. I'm sure it was compelling and riveting radio.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
I call db all the time, atleast i did last year. I try and make an appearance every now and again but there really wasn't much to call about this year because the giants were basically out if it in June. Mychael(thats not a typo) Urban hates me so I stopped calling in on weekends. I still can't realize why the McC hates Damon, he's the only guy on KNBR that loves baseball as much as we do and is logical about it instead of being a homer or not using any stats.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
I don't like him because he's smarmy and blustering. I know that's not exactly a rare skillset in today's radio landscape, but it's certainly grating. And not being a homer doesn't mean his analysis is spot on, particularly with his irrational Bonds bashing.

All of which is to say I really miss Bruce McGowan.

Krueger was peerless in his prime
An evening listening to baseball mensch and fan-for-life Krueger, after a win, could double the pleasure of a Giant victory.

Even better, his tough-love takes during Giant losing streaks were often spot-on and edgy.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
My last KNBR call was during Damon's show.  It was after a Warrior game in March of '06.  I remember specifically because I was driving back across the bridge from Oracle to SF and DB was talking about how the NL West was the most awful division in baseball.  He opened the phone lines to look for answers to the following questions:
  1.  Which is the worst division in baseball?
  2.  Who will have more wins:  The Giants or the A's?  And how many wins will that be?
So, Woody from San Francisco got picked and I began my slightly-slurred (beers at the Warrior game) explanation for why the NL Central was the worst division and why the A's were going to win the AL West with 90 wins and the Giants would win the NL West with 92 wins.  Boy oh boy...Bruce RIPPED me.  It went something like this:  "Wow.  Woody from San Francisco...I don't know what you are drinking, but order me one."  Then he hung up on me.

I was spot-on with the NL Central being awful.  I was perhaps overly optomistic in regards to my dear Giants but I correctly predicted that the A's would beat out the Angels in the AL West.

All-in-all I scored a 1.5 out of 2.  That's not bad so I think Damon Bruce owes me a six-pack.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
My buddy Mordy From Monsey, who posts here occasionally, used to call Damon Bruce all the time after Giant games, especially in 2006. He didn't call much this year, as he was pretty fed up by how bad the team was. Damon used to put him on first all the time, especially since he was calling all the way from New York. They actually got pretty chummy, exchanging emails and even hanging out at a game when Mordy went to San Francisco that year.

I always find it funny when people are surprised when a seemingly obvious gay celebrity comes out.

I remember my grandma being surprised when it was revealed Liberace was gay and thinking, "You're kidding, right?"

I remember people being surprised about George Michael and thinking "Didn't you ever see him in those little white shorts in the 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go' video?"

With Rob Halford, it shouldn't have been a surprise since he always looked like he was on his way to a leather bar in the Castro.

Re: OT: McC KNBR Callers
I called Damon on the drive home after watching Tim Lincecum make what turned out to be his penultimate (I think that's kind of like next-to-last.) start at Fresno.  That was the night Tim was wilder than any time I had seen him in the minors -- and all he did was pitch a no-hitter (over 6 1/3 innings before the pitch count got him).

I believe it is that control that will determine whether is a very, very good pitcher or an all-time great.

And apparently the Giants are unwilling to give him up for Miguel Cabrera, which I believe is a good decision on their part.

I'm not sure how the Giants are going to get any hitting, but I don't think that is the answer.  I would love to have Miguel -- but not at the expense of Tim and more.
