Over on MLBTR there's a link to a Ken Rosenthal rumor filled story that suggests the Nats will not have a place for Ryan Church after signing FA's, and would be willing to trade him for young MLB ready pitching.Apparently the Padres are looking at him as a "cheap" replacement candidate for CF.
While not a power hitter, Church is a "gap to gap" LH that does have decent career numbers .271/.348/.462/.810 at the plate, is known to have a very good defensive skill set, and is under 30 y/o. His 2007 line was: AVG .272/HR 15/RBI 70/OBP .349/SLG .464, with a career line at the phonebooth, of .355/.394/.548/.942(31 ab's, but 0 HR)
The only reason I ask this question is that he is cheap ($395K), and living in Reno I saw him play with UNR. He did play 1B up here while in college, but his arm and speed placed him in the OF. IMO Sabean has to be looking at any and all options. Conventional thinking will not get the Giants out of this hole. The guy is solid, at least league average, but not stellar. In 2006, the League Averages for all MLB OF that played 50 games or more was:
My primary interest is that he is a LH, his career OBP is above .345, and he really has nowhere to play with the Nat's (especially if they pick up AJones).
Comment Starter: If Ryan Church agreed to shift to 1B, would you trade one of the Giants young pitching prospects for a "project" at 1B ? If so which young pitching prospect ?
