Matt Cain (and his bad luck)

Was bouncing around Baseball Musings and came across the Probalistic Model of Range postings. While there's plenty of interesting stuff (like a confirmation of how bad Durham was defensively this year), what struck my mind was how bad defense was behind Matt Cain. We all know about the run support issue... I know its just one defensive metric, but... it was really bad. Especially when looking at the Giants other 4 regular starters, who all had above average defense behind them.

Scroll down to defense behind pitchers... sorry to make you work :)

I'd also like to note my increasing rage with the Vizquel re-signing. For 5.5 million times two years, we're getting a 60-year-old, declining, worstoffenseintheleague shortstop. One who is barely in the top third for shortstops, defensively. I'd have rather taken Pittsburgh's salary dump when they were shopping it.

Vizquel is barely in the top third defensively?  What team have I been watching?

Re: Matt Cain (and his bad luck)
I was going on emotion. My thought at the time was that if Sabean would look at just this metric (and none other) maybe he wouldn't give Vizquel league-average-shortstop money. Of course, in a perfect world our GM would look at multiple ways of evaluating talent, and in the real world, our GM... wait? How DOES he evaluate talent?

But the story was that there are some numbers out there saying that Cain had bad luck defense to go with his no-luck offense.

Re: Matt Cain (and his bad luck)
I think this stat doesn't like him as much, but nearly every other defensive statistic has Vizquel solidly in the top 5 in the majors.
