Bonds' Risky Signing...

Understandably, teams were very weary of signing Bonds to begin with, but now I don't think anyone is willing to risk signing an aging veteran slugger who has both potential for injury and potential for jail time.

My question is this...

If Bonds, who is not a member of the Players Association, wants to, could he not strike a deal with a team on a game-by-game pro-rated basis?  Somewhat similar to Clemens pro-rated deal, but in reverse.  Like a deal that says, "I'll play for $10 million a year, and that's based on my career average of games per season.  Then if I miss any games below that, you don't pay me for games I haven't played."

I realize that the union would not allow something like this, but since Bonds is not a part of the Players Assoc. is it even possible?  Not that he would...

Re: Bonds' Risky Signing...
I think he's still a member of the MLBPA, just not party to their licensing agreement.

Re: Bonds' Risky Signing...
That's my understanding. An understanding I actually came to after making a similar comment about Bonds not being in the MLBPA and being kindly instructed otherwise by those who know more than I do.

Re: Bonds' Risky Signing...
I guess that's why I am asking...  I wanted to know if this kind of scenario were even possible.  If it was, it's the first thing Bonds should use as a selling point to getting signed.  That, or doing a Frank Thomas/Oakland A's kind of contract with mega-incentives if he plays near his career averages.
If Brad Hennesy had Steve Kline's attitude you'd get Rob Nen... without the triple digit heat.

Re: Bonds' Risky Signing...
Well, if he is indeed still in the union, then he couldn't end-around any of their objections.

I can't see Bonds signing a contract like that even if he was allowed to, though. If he can't get the kind of offer he thinks he deserves - which is now far more likely than it was yesterday - I fully expect him to just walk away.

Re: Bonds' Risky Signing...
We need him to sign with another team because he is a type-A free agent and we need the draft pick!!!

Re: Bonds' Risky Signing...
Won't matter, we won't offer him arbitration so we won't get the pick.

+1!
That's right.  We have to offer arbitration to get the draft pick and that ain't gonna happen.

Re: +1!
Unless of course he signed with someone else before the deadline! Which is as likely as us offering him arbitration, in so much as it's never going to happen!

Re: Bonds' Risky Signing...
There's only one sob story this country falls far that would rehabilitate Bonds enough to get him a contract -- That's right: I've seen the light. I'm playing for Jesus. The money doesn't matter, I just want to play to glorify His name. And so on and so on. A huge number of people in this country, including some baseball owners and fans, would welcome a Born Again Barry. And it's the only way this story could get crazier than it already is. Much as I loved watching him hit, though, I'd rather see him retire than see it come to this.

Can't somebody just kidnap his puppy or something? People love dog sob stories right now.

Re: Bonds' Risky Signing...
When I went to that last game, my buddy and I just watched him fly out in that last at-bat and both of us said that he'd be gone before the last out (which he was), and that he should have just retired and the love-fest would have been complete.

But no---Barry has got to be Barry. So now he's going to see this all play out, and my feeling is that he ain't gonna like it too much.

the Jesus or puppy angle might work, or...
he could emerge from the Bay coated in oil...
With the season over, I release my adoptee Brian Sabean. Good luck in the world, little buddy.

Re: the Jesus or puppy angle might work, or...
How about if Barry buys a team?? I believe the Chicago Cubs are for sale. He can buy the Cubs and then sign himself to play leftfield and bat cleanup. Do you think he would sign himself, or do you think his reputation would scare him away??And let me apologize in advance for this post, I'm a little delirious right now.

Re: the Jesus or puppy angle might work, or...
Better yet...maybe he signs with someone and in lieu of being paid a salary, he's handed partial ownership to the team.  There's some people 'round here that think that's perfectly plausible.
Screw the Giants, but not Omar. I'm getting drunk and watching some footy.
