Okay I didn't know Sabes skipped the GM meetings to be in Scottsdale...forgive me for being ignorant about this but isn't it important for a GM to attend the GM meetings?

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
well here is the rest of the quote

 * Sabean was the only general manager who didn't attend the GM meetings earlier this month in Orlando. Instead, he stayed back at the team's spring training complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., to go over personnel with newly hired scouting director John Barr.

Well I don't really mind, the real deal making starts in the December Winter Meetings anyway.

I think this is kind of like the "buy low, sell high" concept that Sabean also struggles with.

Why aren't they interested in Japanese relief pitchers? I really feel like they should be. If they want to upgrade the bullpen... it seems like nearly every Japanese relief pitcher who's come over here has been excellent.

they say in the article that they think they will be overpriced due to the success of Okajima. Plus we really don't need relief pitchers.

Did I misread the "not going after Cabrera" part?  It said all discussions would start with Lincecum.  That makes sense.

The Giants don't want to give Lincecum and it's going to cost more than lincecum by himself, he will heading the package

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
Not sure that Baggarly's piece means that they will not go after Cabrera. As anticon says, it just says that it will take at least Lincecum, and Baggarly opines that it will take more.
Schulman actually suggested today that the Giants are in the thick of the Cabrera sweepstakes.

I would think the Dodgers will be tough to beat out for Miguel if they want him badly enough.  It would seem they have the most to offer, with the Angels next in line.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
This question maybe out in left field (way out!) but do you think that Sabean is feeding Schulman the line that their going after Miguel so the Dodgers pay through the nose to get him...weakening them in other positions?

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
I've been thinking along those lines as well. I expect that the interest is legitimate, but that they are just that little bit more willing to talk it up because the Bums are involved.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
On the other hand, after reading a report dated 11/16 on MILB, and a rumor on ESPN, the Dodgers are thinking of addressing their concerns via the FA route (Rowand). So I wouldn't be surprise to learn the Giants trade for a Miggy...T or C.

If the Yanks sign Lowell or anyone else to play 1st, how about trying to acquire Wilson Betemit to play 3rd?  He could at least platoon with Aurilia since he doesn't hit lefties very well.

Zito for Betemit, straight up.  Although I'm not sure what we'd do with the money we saved, since there are no impact bats available on the free agent market  - be able to take on other team's bad contracts (like Sexson)?

NYY just re-signed JPosada, on the verge of re-signing PayRod, have a mega offer on the table to MRivera and apparently another huge offer to MLowell. How does taking on the Albatross contract make any sense especially since they are paying a luxury tax?

The Yankees biggest weakness right now is reliable starting pitching.  200 IP of 105 ERA+ would be a huge plus for them right now.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
I didn't see anything in the article I didn't like. Sounds like we're actually rebuilding from within, and we're not going to overspend on 35 year old players, or overpay with a bunch of young arms for a big bat. If we have do get hitters less talented than Miguel Cabrera, it's ok with me, because I don't want to give up guys like Lincecum or Cain.  The only question I have is will Sabean continue to adhere to this philosophy, or will he start to get nervous if players like Cabrera and Andruw Jones start ending up with other NL West teams.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
I like the part about "an opportunity to shift some dollars and do some different things" in terms of their international scouting.  Assuming that means, shifting MORE dollars to that area, I like it.

Also, on Sabean not being there, wasn't the vote on instant replay 25-5?  That's a total of 30, meaning someone from the Giants had to be there.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
While I'm at it, why does Colletti have to keep going to the Giants to find his assistants?? I think he's starting to feel the heat over there. I know that Joe Torre received some personnel power in his deal with the Dodgers, and if you read some quotes coming from Torre, it almost sounds like he's the GM. Colletti will probably try to surround himself with as many of his friends that he can, men loyal to him and not Torre. If the Dodgers have a bad year this year, it's going to be Colletti that gets fired, not Torre. That's why I wouldn't be surprised if Colletti trades off all of his young studs in win this year types of deals. Even Torre would be on board for trades like this because he's close to 70, and won't be around when a youth movement finally comes to fruition.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
I couldn't read the article because you have to login.  Does it mention why the Giants would be interested in trading for Miguel Tejada?  We just signed Omar so I'm guessing that they would want him to move to 3B, but as far as I can tell he's been a SS his entire career.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
the article didn't say they were interested in Miguel Tejeda. It just said who they're NOT interested in, and who's out there on the market. The writer obviously wasn't told about which players the Giants were actually interested in.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
I had the same problem so I guess you could say I went through the back door. I Googled sjmecurynews.com clicked on sports, clicked on Giants, but what G wrote summoned it up fairly well.

I know many of you will want to put a contract out on me for saying it for the umpteenth time, BUT! 93-94 games were decided by 2 runs or less...they're not that far off from turning this thing (the mess we're in) around.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
Just speculating and maybe my mindset is a little off from Brian Sabean's but here goes:

1b: Richie Sexson, James Loney

3b: Andy Marte, Edwin Encarnacion, Andrew LaRoche, Garrett Atkins/Ian Stewart, Bill Hall (why not?), Miguel Tejada, Wilson Betemit, Eric Chavez, Adrian Beltre (at a discount or a swap of salaries), Joe Crede

OF: Fukudome

I'm sure I missed some but you get the picture.  3b, in particular, shouldn't be too hard to find somebody to man.

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
Sexson, if he can be had for Durham and some salary equalization would be just fine.  Loney will not be available - unless some team wants to grossly overpay (Cain, Lincecum).

Marte, same as Loney, AND he was quite disappointing in '07 (with a AAA OPS of about 766).  I would be stgunned if Sabean was interested in Encarnacion, who is, I believe, in the bottom 25 or 20% defensively.  LaRoche is likely not available.  If the Dodgers get Cabrera, LaRoche goes to Fla as part of the deal; if not, he stays as part of the future (if not a starter).  Atkins/Stewart:  not available without serious overpay.  Bill Hall?  Interesting.  He's never played 3b full time in the majors and not since '05.  And, I am not convinced he is much of an upgrade over Feliz.  Hall '07: 254/315/425 (and 3 straight ye3ars of decline).  Feliz '07: 253/290/418.  You would give up Lowry + for that infinitesimal improvement?  The only guys I like and that I think Sabean would be interested in are Beltre and Crede.  Beltre is reportedly unavailable (and with good reason.  He is a legit MLB 3b, good defense, decent, if not spectacular offense.  I'd love to have him).  Crede seems the most likely, especially if we can trade Roberts (the White Sox are looking for a CF) for him.  Then his injury history and impending FA are not really problems as we have the exact same issues with Roberts.  But I would not trade Lowry + for those issues.  I haven't taken a look at Betimit.

What is discouraging is that there is almost nothing in AAA.  Longoria, who will command near Cabrera like compensation, is about it.  Marte had a poor AAA year.  The Blue Jays have a guy (Hudgins, if I recall right)who had a decent '07 OPS.  The Reds have a guy with a decent OPS.  And, other than AAAA guys, that is about it.  McClain, an AAAA guy, was moved to the OF last year, so it doesn't look like the Giants see him as even an emergency 3b.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
You are taking as certainties a lot of things that I don't necessarily think are true.  Every guy I listed has a realistic shot at becoming a Giant, I believe.  Some more than others, I'd say.  For instance, someone like Loney or Encarnacion would be closer to zero percent than 100 percent.  But to simply discount them or say that their asking price would be way too high as an out-of-hand dismissal isn't the way to go, imo.

Re: Tidbits on the Giants offseason - Mercury News
Wonder why Ragazzo left?  For some reason I thought special assistant to the GM wasn't a real position with power.

Does that mean the scout we stole from the Dodgers takes over?

Ragazzo is responsible for Liriano, Joaquin, Schoop, Sandoval, Villanueva and partly Villalona.  Without knowing how much we spent in years past it's hard to evaluate his performance.
