Feliz Injustice...

Chipper Jones can't believe Wright won Gold Glove

A report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution earlier this week said that Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones can't figure out how David Wright of the New York Mets won the NL Gold Glove.

"When I find out [Wright won] I was speechless, for quite some time," Jones said. "Certainly the guys with the least amount of errors and best fielding percentage quite obviously didn't win it." The report also quoted Jones as saying, "I wouldn't have been disappointed had someone like [Pedro] Feliz or [Aramis] Ramirez won it. I'm a little confused by the final tally, that's a head-scratcher for me."

Wright told The New York Post: "I don't take anything he says to heart. Obviously I think I can be better defensively. But I have a Gold Glove, and that's the bottom line, and that's something I'm very proud of, and I feel like I'm getting better and better defensively, and obviously managers and coaches have seen that."

Source: New York Post

I've been thinking since week 3 that Feliz has had a lock on the Gold Glove.  Chipper Jones solidifies my sentiment with this quote.  Who votes on these things, anyway?

Re: More Evidence...
I was about to question Chipper Jones sanity for citing Aramis Ramirez as a good defender because he's been awful in the past. But, looking at some defensive stats, Ramirez had a really solid year at third base.

Weird!

Re: More Evidence...
I don't like taking Chipper Jones' side against David Wright (or almost anyone else).  And if there's one Giant I'm not gonna prop up with every fiber of my being... well there are several these days, but Pedro's at the top of the list

Haha, when I saw the headline "Chipper Jones can't believe Wright won Gold Glove", I thought you were linking to something from The Onion. That's how much the satirical version of the news has conditioned my brain to authentic news stories.

Re: More Evidence...
From baseball-almanac.com: The Gold Glove Award was first presented by the St. Louis-based Rawlings corporation in 1957 to honor the eighteen best fielders at their positions. Rawlings used a combination of defensive statistics along with visual effect to determine the winner and honored the recipient with a large gold glove. Voting is currently done by the managers and coaches from each Major League team who are NOT able to select their own players.

"...Along with visual effect..." Great line.
In other words, I don't want to vote for (player) because of some subjective reason. Nice.

Question: are coaches and managers able to vote for players in their league only, or can they vote for teams in the other league as well?

Re: More Evidence...
With visual effect...  Does that mean Rawlings contracted ILM to modify footage using digital imaging?  Then when justifying the selection, they can show David Wright chasing down grounders down the first base line, scaling walls and mountains to rob home runs, and battling droids to rescue the princess while initiating the double play.

Wait, double play?  Princess?  There's got to be some double meaning there.

Re: More Evidence...
I love Wright's response.  Basically he says "Yeah, but I got the gold glove.  So nyah."

And how many times does he must and need to say "and," and is he doing it just to annoy and harrass me?

Re: More Evidence...
To me, the GG has been a joke for a long time.  Take Greg Maddux.  He is indeed a great fielding pitcher, I'll admit.  But to win the award like 10 straight years???  The voters simply got lazy and figured, "eh, Maddux won it last year so...sure why not."
I'd kick more tires if I weren't so hamstrung.

Re: More Evidence...
he actually has won 17 gold gloves in all. It's hard to believe he was actually the best fielder all these different times. Thanks to miles for starting this thread. I read this story on Sunday and was thinking of mentioning it myself, but decided not to because I'm all talked out on Pedro Feliz and he's probably not a Giant anymore.

Re: More Evidence...
Many of you are probably too young to remember this, but we once had an outfielder named Jose Cruz Jr.  The guy was amazing in right field, ran down everything hit to him, doubled guys off first a few times, and won a Gold Glove for his efforts.  Then in the playoffs, he watched a ball clang off his golden glove.  Sure wish you all were old enough to remember him.

If Feliz had won a Gold Glove at third, I'm sure there would have been an interesting parallel to Cruz.  But he didn't.  So it's not so interesting anymore.  Why am I mentioning this?  No idea.  Just rambling, really.

Re: More Evidence...
Jose Cruz Sr. had a son that played for the Giants?? There were playoffs in 2003?? I thought the Giants won 100 games that year and the playoffs were cancelled because of a war or something. Seriously though, what a lot of people forget is not only did Jose Cruz Jr. drop that flyball, but in the top half of the inning, after the great Edgardo Alfonzo put the Giants ahead with a clutch hit, Cruz hit into a DP with the bases loaded and one out. He also was something like 0 for 16 that season with the bases loaded. Mr. Clutch. Perhaps he dropped that flyball because he was still thinking about that double play.

Re: More Evidence...
Actually he had butchered a crucial fly in the second game at PacBell, too (the Sir Sid game). It was a tough chance going back into the first archway, but a hometown gold glover really should have made that play.

Re: More Evidence...
Gah.  2003.  The year the Giants won 100 games with Barry Bonds, Jason Schmidt and a collection of muppets.  This season, to me, is the defining season of our most recent disappointments.  The Giants had the most dominant offensive player in the game (by a mile) and one of the top five pitchers in the game.  That should just about be guaranteed world series.  But, of course, we're talking about the Giants.

So, instead, we get: <clang><Worrell blown save><J.T.'s slow ass getting thrown out><no second start for Schmidt>,<thehavenot cries in the middle of Costco where he watched the final out>

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Re: More Evidence...
More on Maddux. there was an internet "expert" vot e a couple of weeks ago and a few of the voters (notably Bill James) omitted Maddux from their ballots entirely. Basically, they argued that holding runners is one of the pitcher's defensive responsibility (probably the most important, ignoring actually pitching), and Maddux has always been terrible at holding runners. They implied that Maddux has 17 undeserved gold gloves.

If you buy the argument (and it seems plenty reasonable to me) Rueter should have won about half a dozen GGs.

Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me.

by Bhaakon on Nov 13, 2007 10:41 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, a few of the voters
made this argument. The other voters disagreed.

Maddux was still voted 2nd behind Johan Santana.

The holding the runners issue aside, all the metrics have Maddux as outstanding defensively.

Re: Yeah, a few of the voters
True, but it's inertia, not metrics, that led to 17th straight.

Re: Yeah, a few of the voters
So you are saying Maddux was so good this season, that he won the NL Gold Glove, and he came in second for the AL Gold Glove despite not pitching one inning there?  Wow, I had no idea he was that good.

AL pitchers don't get to show off much Gold Glove ability since they introduced the Designated Fielder.

Re: More Evidence...

Gold Gloves almost always go to good hitters, unless they are catchers - in which case they go do the worst hitters.  Oh, and pitchers they just give to the closest Maddux.

Maddux Total Salary
Beginning with his $82,000 salary his first year, Maddux is now up to $143,845,000 for total career earnings. I would love to have his life.
Doesn't compare to say what Alex Rodriguez total salary $170,416,252( so far) but not too bad otherwise. Maddux doesn't do a lot of endorsements or  he would have made even more. Not sure what A-Rod's endorsement total is.
