Same 'ol subject, new angle.

Being as this is the eleventy-billionth A-Rod thread let me make this quick.

We need to sign A-Rod so he doesn't go to LA.

Don't worry,
According to the NYT, Torre may want Bernie Williams

"We haven't talked about it, but I certainly wouldn't close the door as far as listening to him and taking a look and seeing," Torre said before the annual gala for his Safe at Home Foundation, a charity devoted to curbing domestic violence. "He'd have to relocate, and I'm not sure if he's into that."

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Sorry, I just can't contain my laughter right now.  So Joe Torre will be just as much an enabler for Ned Colletti as Bruce is for Sabes!

Re: Same 'ol subject, new angle.
I thought that was just a "you never know" type a comment from Joe Torre. I don't put any credence into it. Why do you spend 30 million per season on a player when you have a promising kid like Andy LaRoche in the wings?? Then again, Colletti seems to do it all the time. ARod makes much more sense for the Giants, who have a hole at third base, no kid anywhere near ready, and not even one bat for the heart of the order. They also will be looking at an attendance drop of biblical proportions if they don't get a big named everyday player to replace Bonds.

Re: Same 'ol subject, new angle.
But Colletti doesn't do it all the time. At mid season when Colletti asked McCourt for the sheckels to pump up a playoff bound team he was told the cupboard was bare and to make do with the kids. McCourt bought the Dodgers for no money down, has further leveraged the team as its value went up and just doesn't have the kind of money he would need to subsidize a cash losing team. Colletti will kick the tires, haven't you noticed that Colletti kicks the tires on everybody? but ARod isn't going to the Bums.

Re: Do you have numbers for this?
The McCourts seem like EXACTLY the kind of owners who would sign A-Rod. They're eager for attention and approval. The Torre signing was exhibit 'A' of their mindset. Plus, Bill Plashcke's been whacking them in LA Times for the last few months. The LA baseball intelligentsia seems to want the Dodgers to jettison some of their young players and sign an impact bat. It wouldn't surprise me if they sign A-Rod and jettison two of Kemp, LaRoche, Loney and Kershaw. I imagine their package of youngsters could net either Cabrera or Santana. They'd look good going into 2008 and 2009 and set to crash and burn somewhere after that.

Re: Do you have numbers for this?
You know, for three of that group I might even consider trading Lincecum or Cain.

Loney, LaRoche and Kershaw would definately get me thinking about doing it.

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Re: Do you have numbers for this?
There'll be good news if the Dodgers sign A-Rod, but don't get Santana. They(Dodgers) lose leverage in any deal to move LaRoche and Lowry might be sufficient to net LaRoche AND something useful.

Re: Do you have numbers for this?
Well on one side we have your Dodger friends. On the other side we have pretty much the entire baseball business press, including Forbes. I'm loyal to my friends too, but I'm going with the numbers here.

Em, I asked for the numbers
Forbes valued the Dodgers as the 4th most valuable team in MLB, behind the 2 east coast empires and the Mets.

By revenues, they were also 4th behind the Yanks, Sox and Mets.

By operating income, they were 2nd behind the Marlins.

Well on one side we have a poster attempting to be snarky. On the other side we have Forbes. I'm going with Forbes here.

3b is a next priority
Just listening to Sabean sounds like he will have a new 3b before the ARod sweepstakes are concluded. I really believe Sabean wants more Venenzuelan loving and will see what he can do to trade for Miguel Cabrera. Obviously he would prefer not to trade either Cainer or Lincy, however, you've got to give to get. Stay tuned.

Re: Same 'ol subject, new angle.
I'm very reservedly hoping that the circumstances lead to the Giants getting either LaRoche or Kemp.

The circumstances being 1. Colletti 2. Our rebuilding 3. The Dodgers desire for a pitcher

I really don't think that Lowry for something good from the Dodgers is completely out of the picture.

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Re: Same 'ol subject, new angle.
while imagining lowry wearing dodger blue makes me sick... i would definitely do those deals... signal agent Colletti and let him know that phase III* of operation blue crush is set to commence.

*Phase I was the signing of savvy vets with good speed and defense to block good young prospects. Phase II was the apparent willingness of LA to take our useless parts off our hands in return for low level minor leaguers a la Sweeney for Denker.

Re: Same 'ol subject, new angle.
Jason Schmidt is supposed to be ready right from the start next year, isn't he?? They're stuck with Loaiza, and already have Penny, Lowe and Billingsley. That makes five. I can see them attempting to deal for Johan Santana because he's the best, but what do they need Noah Lowry for?? As for signing ARod, Boras was saying that he expected Andruw Jones to be a better fit for the Dodgers than ARod, so I think they don't expect the Dodgers to be major players in the ARod game. I wouldn't put much stock in what Joe Torre says at a New York charity function. He probably just wanted to throw something in the Steinbrenner's face about his team signing ARod and Bernie Williams.

Re: Same 'ol subject, new angle.
RX

You might want to cross off the possibility that A-ROD will be coming to the Giants if what I read in the NY Daily news (Bill Madden article) is true. I was not aware of the fact that the Giants "have two more years remaining on the revenue-sharing subsidy they get for building their new stadium. Once that's up, they go from payees to payers."

Re: Same 'ol subject, new angle.
Assuming Cain and Lincecum develop as predicted, and FA contracts continues to grow, they're both going to be demanding at least Zito money when they become free agents. Even if the Giants payroll grows with the FA market, there's no way that they'd invest 80M in just four players (those fours being Cabrera, Zito, Cain and Lincecum).

easy solution for Magowan. Build another new stadium!! I want the Giants to sign ARod, but I have no illusions that they will actually do so.

Re: Same 'ol subject, new angle.
This is not my understanding.  I think that as long as they are still making payments on the stadium the interest portion of these payments can continue to be duducted just as they have been in the past.

Payments
Seems as though I read someplace that the league is so PO'd at the Giants for building their own stadium that they don't get the same deduction on the interest that other teams do on their lease payments.

Re: Payments
why would the league be mad at the Giants for building their own stadium?? They wanted them to stay in San Francisco after the 1992 season, and they know that the voters turned down a new stadium year after year. Is their desire for the Giants to STILL be in Candlestick, hemorrhaging money??

Re: Payments
Because it plants the ugly seed in taxpayers' minds that other multi-billionaries could fork up some of their own dough for these things as well. Here in DC there's a fairly famous story about the meeting between the baseball relocation committee and the city government. Giving their pitch for helping build the new stadium, a member of the DC committee said "now we have an aggressive plan that would allow for a 60-40 split of the costs." The baseball guys laughed out loud and when they regained there composure, Jerry Reinsdorph said "We're thinking more along the lines of a 100-0 split. You guys better go back and get a new plan."

Re: Payments
It's a whole privately funded/publically funded thing, which determines the way the league itself can make money off the stadium. I forget how it works, but the league makes less off of a privately funded ballpark. Hence, they don't like it.
