I Was Wrong!

The vast majority of you were right.  The Giants will never be any good again as long as the brain dead Brian Sabean remains the GM.  Brain wants to re-sign the worst half of the worse hitting infield in major league baseball.

"Sabean said the team was already in discussions about a one-year deal with a vesting option for free-agent shortstop Omar Vizquel, and was interested in re-signing third baseman Pedro Feliz."

Re: I Was Wrong!
On the other hand, last year we heard he was about to sign Feliz to a 3 yr 22 million dollar contract and that turned out to be pure fantasy. I won't call him an idiot until he actually signs the both of them. And I won't even call him one then if he signs them after a long search for an upgrade and fails to find one. If he signs them both soon and doesn't even try to do better, I think it will be unanimous around here that he guy has to go.

Why on to Plan B so soon? Thought we was going to kick some tires, do our due diligence and try some winter meeting trade madness.

by wilriv21 on Nov 1, 2007 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

Re: I Was Wrong!
Most of the FA Tires Sabean seems intending upon kicking are outfielders with the exception of A-Rod which I would bet he thinks he would still be fine with both Vizquel and Feliz on the Roster too by moving Feliz to 1B or OF.  I would think that the trades Sabean might be targeting are also primarily outfielders.  What I am hearing is that the upgrades he is planing are at the expense of blocking what little young talent we have which is almost exclusively outfielders.

Here is what I am now expecting for our 2008 Position Players:

LineUp:
Roberts/Davis LF
Winn RF
S. Casey 1B (2yrs and $10M)
A. Jones CF (3yrs and $51M)
Molina C
Durham/Frandsen 2B
Feliz 3B (2yrs and $10M)
Vizquel SS (1yr and $3M)

Bench:
Aurilia IF
Frandsen/Durham IF
Lewis or Ortmeier OF
Davis/Roberts OF
Alfonzo or Ridriguez C

move feliz and you give up the one remotely positive thing about him.  Retard move.  So is signing Andruw Jones for anything near what he's going to get on the market.  He's worth more than Fred Lewis, but $15 million a year more?  I don't freakin think so.

Re: ewewew
The Dodgers supposedly want Andruw Jones. They will outbid us and I'm sure Andruw would rather play in SoCal for Joe Torre than he would in NoCal for Bruce Bochy. This is the same way they got Juan Pierre from us, and I have a feeling we'll wind up happy about this as well.

Re: I Was Wrong!
I'm quickly becoming extra extra pessimistic about this team.  So much so that I think you could scratch the Davis part of the LF platoon and make him exclusively bench, and probably scratch Franny too, making HIM exclusively bench.  Then scratch a couple of the under-30 bench guys and replace them with the cagey veteran FAs we'll be signing and you'll be looking at YOUR 2008 San FranCISCO GIIIIIIAAAAAANTS!!!

Y'all feeling the excitement?  I'm feeling it!

Re: I Was Wrong!
I don't mind Vizquel so much because it's only a 1 year deal but if he brings back Feliz in any context, especially a multi-year deal, I'll have a really hard time stomaching it.

by xanthan on Nov 1, 2007 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

So damn soon???
I join La Baron in her FFS on this.  I can accept Omar after a decent search, and even then I would need some time to convince myself it's really the best move. Never Feliz.  Assuming these two return with Durham at 2nd, does Frandsen go to first base or is he just out of the picture? Not that I think he's the second coming of Joe Morgan (player version), but I think he's worth giving regular playing time to if we're rebuilding. So is he just relegated to the bench again?

Feliz back without even a decent search for possibilities?

FFFSSSSBBQ.

I was not
I'm hoping Vizquel comes back with the terms indicated (one year with an option for a second) because there is no one to replace him and his glove is still magnificent. I wouldn't mind Feliz for a short term deal, IF they make a real try to get ARod and can't get it done. What I really would like to see is some work on changing the right side of the infield. While Ortmeier intrigues me, I think Durham is a disaster and Frandsen looks to be a career utility guy at best. Perhaps, Velez is better defensively than advertised and could work out at second (not likely since they have shifted him to the outfield,) but I'd really like at least one of the two positions seriously upgraded.

I also have no problem with upgrading either Roberts or Winn, if that can be done with someone with some power. I'm for giving Davis, Lewis, and Schierholtz a shot to see who works out best for the remaining position. It would be a mistake to just hand two of the outfield jobs to any combination of these three.

Hey rainman
You're usually a pretty good sport with all sorts of this stuff, and obviously have a pretty thick skin, but I still wanted to pass this by you first because it's the only popular image we have that takes has a member of the blog as part of its humor. Anyway, I was planning on nominating the "rainmanA-Rodwhoopwhoop" image in the McCoven image awards because it is a popular image, but I wanted to see if you were cool with that first. I think the first rule of the awards is not to actively insult, offend, or call out a particular poster, so even though I believe the thing has gotten to the point where it's all in good fun, I just wanted to make sure you'd be cool with it.

Sorry for jumping into your diary for this, too. Not trying to hijack.

It can literally hamstring what you want to do for quite a while.

To me, this is the most significant tidbit I get from the article.  I hate when people say "literally" when what they are saying is anything but.

"Baron Davis is literally on fire." after he drains three straight baskets.  No.  No, he is NOT literally on fire.  If he were, we'd be screaming in horror as we ran to find the nearest 10# ABC portable fire extinguisher.

The Giants would be FIGURATIVELY hamstrung...financially speaking.  Sorry if you feel like I've wasted your time by tricking you into reading this relatively insignificant post, but it's a pet-peeve of mine.

I'm literally pissed.  There is urine on me.

Not to start another grammar/usage thread, but...
Actually, I have read a couple articles that have said that usage of "literally" almost since it was coined has included the (ironically non-literal) sense of "extremely" or "seriously" as it is frequently (mis?)used.  Sorry, I can't find the articles, but just to let you know that those usage notes are out there somewhere.

Sorry there's urine on you, though. I hope the donor was literally hot. (Meaning very desirable, not actually elevated in temperature.)

Some additional quotes from other sources:

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071101&content_id=2290750&vkey=new s_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

Giants general manager Brian Sabean reiterated his desire to re-sign shortstop Omar Vizquel, a potential free agent. But Sabean indicated that Vizquel, 40, wants more than a one-year contract.

"We're not prepared to do that," Sabean said.

Sabean added that talks with third baseman Pedro Feliz, who already has filed for free agency, have proceeded slowly because the seven-year veteran changed agents. The Giants have exclusive negotiating rights with Vizquel and Feliz through Nov. 12.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/11/01/SPHFT4PLH.DTL&type=sports

While Bonds said last week his Giants career might not be over and that, "There's still time. Things might change," Sabean had a one-word response to the possibility of the team changing its stance: "no."

Meantime, Sabean is trying to re-sign the Giants who occupied both of A-Rod's positions, Omar Vizquel, who at 40 remained a Gold Glove-caliber shortstop, and third baseman Pedro Feliz.

Negotiations have begun with Vizquel's agent, Adam Katz, who's seeking a two-year deal while the Giants prefer one year. Feliz, who has changed agents (Mike Arias to the Levinson brothers, Sam and Seth), seems more willing to let the free-agent process play out.

One More Reason To Sign ARod
All the money it would take to sign ARod would mean that Sabean has nothing left to spend on players like Vizquel, Feliz, and Sean Casey.

Re: I Was Wrong!
I don't think Sabean actually wants either of them; he's just making nice so he can sign either of them if he can't land A-rod.  A-rod can play great SS, so if we got him, we wouldn't need Omar.  If he's fine with playing 3B, then Feliz gets to go find his fruity multi-year contract somewhere else.

Re: I Was Wrong!
I think you may be right about Feliz.  But, a Sabean sure seemed to be saying in the referenced quotes that a deal with Omar was coming and it was coming soon.  As I have said multiple times in multiple threads I do not want either.  But it sure would not be Omar I would chose if I was forced to take one.
