only female ump in pro ball gets dumped

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/10/31/sports/s162204D91.DTL

now how does the number 1 ranked ump in aa fall  all the way to the bottom and get dumped...after she gets chosen to do the futures game and the hr derby?

there is something wrong here.

If she were a man, she'd likely be a g.m. for someone by now. I would have preferred her to re-signing Sabean.

I do not live in the bastion of political correctness. If she can't stand the heat, get out of the ML.

Re: Time to get her back in the kitchen
I don't consider it a question of political correctness. There is a difference between something that is PC and something that is non-progressive. It can be a thin line, sure.

That said, I'm not trying to down on you. Not in the least. I find your perpetual optimism to be refreshing, and I appreciate your hardcore fandom and generally well informed, calm, reasonable opinions. I also like that you have a rich wealth of experience and stories to share from you history of being a fan. I only say this because I know it can seem like I pick on you sometimes. It's nothing personal. I'm just sensitive to the whole gender/race issue, which is not to say the two are mustually inclusive whatsoever.

Well, I'll say it then
HTS was right the first time and is now mincing away from his point, so I'll say it.  WilRiv, I like you and I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, but it's not "politically correct" (in the senseless, patronizing sense that prompts the quotation marks) to say that the kitchen comment is just witless.  I am not politically correct, either (as comfortably witnessed by many comments on here, for "heaven's" sake, including the 'directions' joke that appears below & my howling at the joke immediately after that one), but a witless aborted joke deserves to be called a witless aborted joke.

HTS, I apologize for saying "mincing." I meant swishing.

Re: Well, I'll say it then
It's cool. Mincing, swishing, gargling, spitting, all of the above. I can't deny what turns me on! Still, I stand fast that I don't approve of the comment. I only even retracted at all because I've just been getting on Wil's case for a bunch of stuff lately and I felt like it was beginning to be frequent enough to seem personal.

We could get upset but here's why we shouldn't:

-It's a tired joke.
-Any delicious food prepared in the kitchen will not be shared with people who make tired jokes. Just try me. I'll roll you out of the kitchen covered in molasses and flour with a meat theromometer sticking out of your eye.

Re: only female ump in pro ball gets dumped
I read that and felt really sad for her. There was a note in the article about how lots of MILB umps get released every year, but still, meh.

The bit about how Prince Fielder gently lifted her out of the way before charging the mound was cute and funny, though. Prince is such a gentleman! "Excuse me miss, but I have to go punch this MF out."

Re: only female ump in pro ball gets dumped
Really, her rating dropped significantly over the past season. I seriously doubt it had to do with her lack of balls, but rather with her balls and strikes.

Honestly, because she's the only woman, I don't think they'd can her without good cause based on her job performance, especially since they got sued for gender discrimination before.

Bonds stands alone.

Re: LOL!
I like the directions one. It might be schlocky, hack, and vaguely disconnected, but it deftly turns the proverbial knife of an especially tired male stereotype. Which was a bit refreshing considering the inevitability of jokes based on tired female stereotypes (however hilarious!) that this was going to bring up.

Or maybe I read too much into it...

It's his fault for not listening when she told him what the strike zone was. He was probably off his in own little world wondering what she looks like naked.

Re: only female ump in pro ball gets dumped
I can't come up with any other sweeping generalizations for the male gender, other than spending my/our money on stupid stuff. The only time that happened to me was when I loaned some money to a boyfriend. He was unemployed and needed some quick cash to take care of a debt he owed his parents, and I was working fulltime. I offered to loan him money to help out. Later I learned he'd taken the few hundred dollars I'd loaned him and bought video games and D&D books. I was not pleased. He never told me the straight answer why, either. I tried to ascertain if he'd spent all the money I loaned him on stuff he didn't need, or lied to me and asked for more than he needed to pay the debt and pay back his parents. Not being forthcoming with me is what really got to me.

But now we're not talking about baseball, are we?

Re: only female ump in pro ball gets dumped
Why do people who belong to a minority feel as if they lose their jobs only because of discrimination?    Could it be that they weren't simply up to standard, yet they're "entitled" because they are a minority?  Maybe they did discriminate, but this seems to happen all too often for that.

Re: only female ump in pro ball gets dumped
I'll take a stab at this one.

I'm a minority in every sense of the word: a Hispanic female. Most of the time I don't feel discriminated against, and this has never affected my work or schooling in an adverse way. However, there's still the nagging voice in the back of my head when someone I meet or someone I know reacts to me negatively. If I've earned it, the voice goes away. If it's unwarranted then I start wondering...do they dislike me because I'm Hispanic, female, young, chubby, because I have acne, because I wear glasses, etc. People will always find a reason to dislike you or treat you badly and I don't think that's exclusive to race or gender. Someone will always assume something about you based on your race or gender, even intelligent, enlightened people. One of the most common ones I get is the assumption that I speak Spanish. Because my last name is Hispanic. And then when I politely say that no, I don't speak Spanish but I speak French and Japanese and will be learning Korean in university later on, the reaction is "meh." Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't aware my kickass language skills were diminished because I can't order a ding dang burrito in Jalisco.

I don't think of myself as a minority. I guess it's because I haven't felt real discrimination--yet of course. I'm bracing myself for that once I start working in sports journalism for real. But I can understand the feeling of having an invisible bullseye on your back from time spent deflecting jerkoff people and their narrowminded shit. Some people take it too far, for sure. But unfortunately, discrimination is still a problem. As long as it is, we'll have that question of "Is Person X being discriminated against because of race/gender/religion/whatever?"

Why are so many jumping to a conclusion
She hasn't said anything at least in the article about being discriminated.  I don't understand why people need to make a big deal about this either way.

I don't think it's PC to say that it'd be nice if there were more female umps in baseball, just like it's nice to have more women at the ballpark and here at MCC.
