A First Base Solution

Two words CONOR JACKSON.  He is on the D Backs, hit .284 with 15 homers and is a mere 25 years old
What do the DBacks need? A Pitcher. What do the Giants have a lot of? Pitching.

Conor could become the mentee of infield veterans Aurilla, Durham, Omar.  He went to CAL Berkeley so would not mind coming back to California.

Noah or (god forbid) Kevin or Sanchez and someone else (if necessary) for Conor Jackson. Great improvement, we get younger and get someone who will only get better and fit into the future of the Giants.

Re: A First Base Solution
Are you saying God forbid to giving up Kevin Correia? I would give up 10 Kevin Correias for one Conor Jackson and wouldn't even think about it.

Re: A First Base Solution
Lowry for Jackson has been discussed and most realize that this in division trade ain't happening especially with Clark and Arizona having a falling out in their negoiations for a contract extention and with Tracy's recovery from his microsurgery being an open question mark.

Re: A First Base Solution
Jackson would be nice, if unrealistic, but right now I'd still prefer a trade for Nick Johnson (pending the passing of a physical, of course).  I can't imagine the Nats would ask for much.  Even if he plays half a season he's worth about 3 wins.

Re: A First Base Solution
Johnson is likely to not even be worth his salary let alone any talent given up to get him.  Nick is way to big a risk to never be able to play effectively again let alone everyday again.

Re: A First Base Solution
And I believe Roger has already told us that Nick Johnson doesn't look likely to be making a full recovery.

That would be a step in the right direction

A better solution!

Petition the league to delete 1st base all together, and have players run directly to 2nd.

The good:  Players would have to run through Matt Cain.

The bad:  Players would have to run through Lincecum.

Re: A better solution!
If that happens, Scott Munter's value will go through the roof.  That and you will see Prince Fielder bunt more (BTW where is Todd Greene these days)
Brian Sabean just hit me over the head with a bat and ran away yelling, "HA HA HA, I got an extension! HA HA HA!"

Re: A better solution!
The Good: No more 6-4-3 double plays.

The Bad: Ray Durham is now the first line of defense.

The Bad: The Giants could neither move a runner from first to third last year nor from third to home. This fails to address those two critical issues.

Re: A First Base Solution
Guys, I just can't help feeling that the thinking on trades is too far 'in the box'. If we want to get full value for Lowry we are going to need to raid the creme of some contenders farm system. You need to look at who has been raking at AAA, looking at guys who have only had a cup of coffee or a September call up, maybe even a few AA high flyers.  We need to acquire talented guys and give them the 500 ABs they need to develop rather than suggesting guys who already have 500 ABs and are now serious contributors on thier teams. Why? Because any team that needs a 3-4-5 SP to compete probably needs that young and productive RF next season to compete too, but they can afford to give up a couple high ceiling kids who will be starts in the future but aren't part of the 08 big push.  And Lowry is worth several of these kids in trade- he's a proven winning starter with a good contract and a good era.  MLB executives value such things very highly and they've all had enough hot shot kids not pan out that they value 'ceiling' lower than board geeks do. Just compare what Timmy was worth last off season when it was all about potential, to what he's worth now that he's walked the walk. He's the sme guy, his ceiling hasn't changed, but his value has. So lets have some more outside the box thinking that tries to use the few trading chits the Giants have to improve the team for 5 years rahter than 1 or 2.

Brewers
Like in the Bill Hall thread a good place to start would be with the Brewers.  They need pitching and have not one, but two blocked third basemen: Mat Gemel and Taylor Green.

Neither has hit at AA yet so they're both questionable as to long term value.  Also I have not seen any actual scouting video or report on them but their numbers look good.

What I'd really like to see is the Giants develop a farm system where, in terms of position players, they're two deep in terms of real prospects at each of the skill positions (C,2b,ss,3b,cf,rf) Prospects would include any players who are under team control for 5 or more years.
