Thoughts on 2002 WS

Watching Kenny Lofton tonight make a spectacular catch in left reminded me that I am still upset with Dusty Baker.

Why didn't Dusty play Shinjo in center, Lofton in left and have Bonds DH?

Is it time to let it go?

well since I still have a nervous breakdown anytime any announcer counts outs: "only 6 more outs and team x has won..."

I'm not the one to tell you to let it go!

Re: Thoughts on 2002 WS
I was at that game in the upper deck, and as such, I feel that I had a much better perspective than most to judge the play of the outfielders.  I can say with near absolute certainty, that if Dusty Baker had played Shinjo in CF and Lofton at DH (rather than the reverse), we would have won that series.  Stupid Dusty.

I'm not sure what to make of that?

Re: Thoughts on 2002 WS
remember i was 12.  pre that year i don't really have a lot of giants memories.

and my life has been pretty good so far i think.  I've just always been wayyy too into baseball.  It's always been my only means of communication with my dad.

Tears of sadness?

Or tears of happiness, such as when one beholds the phenomenal aura of Barry Bonds?

You people are too kind, allowing me countless opportunities to post this picture.

Re: Thoughts on 2002 WS
I was so sad when Shinjo retired, because it ruined my dream of attending a Nippon Ham Fighters game in a Giants Shinjo road uni.

Totally off topic, of course.

One of Shinjo's bats is in the Giants' "locker" in the HOF, BTW. At least, as of July 2006.

No. Shinjo's bat was in the Giants' "locker" section of the Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown, as of July 2006.

Seriously.

It probably still is considering he was the first Japanese player to play in a World Series.

I really wish I could find that video of Barry being shown some clips of Shinjo's antics. Alas, it's probably lost somewhere in Japan now.

I completely missed when Lofton went to the Indians in the first place. Listening to the radio last week hearing Jon Miller call a clutch Lofton hit in the playoffs was...yeah.

Re: Thoughts on 2002 WS
Kenny Lofton is some kind of good luck charm.  He seems to make the playoffs every year, no matter who he is playing for.

Re: Thoughts on 2002 WS
The Giants likely would have been far better off keeping more of the guys they lost after the 2002 season.  The list includes Lofton, Jeff Kent, Bill Mueller, Livan Hernandez, Russ Ortiz, Reggie Sanders and Ramon Martinez.

And the Giants even ate Livan's salary.

Re: Thoughts on 2002 WS
Murph and Mac were talking about this the other day and went through his entire career...it's really amazing the way he makes it to the playoffs nearly every year.

I seem to recall Reggie Sanders doing the same sort of thing.

Re: Thoughts on 2002 WS
I just looked it up.  Geez.

In the 13 years from 1995 to 2007, Lofton only missed the postseason twice.  Amazingly, during that time he made the post-season with six different teams.

DUSTY, YOU SONOFABITCH!!!

There's no getting over 2002.  I was there and watched the collapse of Game 6.  I even returned for Game 7, knowing the final outcome.  I've never been more depressed at the START of a game than I was at Game 7.  There was no recovering, no way no how.

JR -- Realizing how depressed you were BEFORE game 7 of the 2002 World Series, you do realize that you could have assuaged your pending grief somewhat had you bet your life savings on the Angels, don't you?

I know.  Now you're REALLY depressed.  :)
