... and I'm rooting for the Rockies

I'd been sort of rooting for the Indians this season but watching some Rockies games I'd gotten into it and I'd just started getting sucked into this one (exciting playoff one-hitters from power-armed rookies? Kind of fun) when the shutout gets broken up. How?

A homer from Shane f***ing Victorino. Oh, I'm in now.

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
Obviously by season I mean playoffs - I root for the Indians in the AL but I have a perpetual headache to prove I spent most of my time last year rooting for the Giants. :(

And, obviously, I just mean for the playoffs. If I could quit the Giants I would have by now. :BrokebackMountain:

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
Brokeback Mountain makes me mad (I really should see it before I hand over my unconditional hate), but Brokeback Mountain jokes make me happy. Also, you've implied that the Giants took it up the but this season with nothing but sweat and a hearty application of spit to oil the gears, and that seems accurate to me.

Why
Why does it make you mad when you haven't seen it yet? Hate the short story?

Re: Why
Outside of The Shipping News (which I really liked), I really despise just about everything Annie Proulx has ever written. Strangely enough, the BBM short story was one of the pretty tolerable ones.

I don't have much time to elaborate now, but I'll be happy to explain when I get a chance. For the sake of intrigue, a very good movie called The Wedding Banquet has something relatively small to do with it.

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
Can I ask why you hate it so much? I went into it expecting the world and more. I was disappointed by it simply because I had such high expectations, but I still like the film.

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
Actually, it's not that I hate the movie itself. I have nothing against that except for some of the laughable soundbites that came out of it, and expect that when I do see it I might like it very much.

What really bothers me about it is everything that surrounded the film. I already pretty much hate Annie Proulx, so that was a bad start (and I have read this short story, so I'm familiar with the story itself, as long as they didn't throw killer monkeys from space into the film). But then the movie started getting all this insane ridiculous attention and accolades for nothing more than dealing with themes that we've seen a thousand times, except this time it was two white cowboys.

The reception for the film was pretty obnoxious to me. The world acted like it was the first movie that dealt with homosexual themes that had ever been made. Ang Lee himself had made one earlier in his career that probably dealt with the same thing in much more complex ways (The Wedding Banquet).

I don't know, the level of attention Brokeback Mountain got for being "brave" and "groundbreaking" when it actually didn't break any new ground, even in terms of the director's own work, really bothered me. And it seemed like it was all because these two guys were cowboys, as if that somehow makes it braver or more groundbreaking.

Meh, I'm not saying this very well at all. I'm really, really not saying this well, but I think that covers enough of what I'm trying to say that you might understand. I felt so much hypocrisy and backpedalling in the insane reception the movie got, and it highlighted so many of the ways middle America continues to ignore the significant progress that HAS already been made for acceptance of homosexuality and homosexual rights (and how liberal America makes such a teenage fuss over anything that challenges those conservative values...)... bah... I should have collected my thoughts better before I started writing this.

It was frustrating for me. I should watch the movie, though, and I want to. I might really enjoy it.

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
I understand what you mean. The peripheral crap you pointed out did bother me, especially the hullabaloo about the homosexuality and the gay community and censorship. I'd equate it to how a fandom can put me off from a television show/movie/book. I'm guilty of letting that keep me from getting into a certain work of art (work of art, for lack of a better phrase).

The film is still very good. I was disappointed in it because I expected it to melt my cynical black stone robot heart. It was sad and emotional, but it didn't move me in the ways I expected it to. But yes, do see the movie because if you can get around all that other stuff it's an enjoyable movie.

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
I've seen it twice , and I think the groundbreaking was that the homosexuality was indeed in the middle of a very traditionally male oriented environment , i.e. rodeo/cowboy/whatever you want to call it.
I mean , other than the Village People's parody has anything really been exposed in that area?

Tortured love story with an ending that kicked you (the assault/murder) and wrung you out (the visitation to the parents) and you're out the theater singing the praises , I guess.

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
this is a tough call. I've seen Arizona win a Championship, so I could care less about seeing thme do it.

However, Matt Williams is a broadcaster. Will Clark is a roving instructor (or he was in ST). But most importantly, former Giant backstop Bob Melvin, the pride of Encinal Middle School and Menlo-Atherton High School, is their manager.

But Colorado is is so exciting to watch, I think I'll just have to wait until the games start and see how I feel about it.

Bonds stands alone.

Diamondbacks
Much as I'm loathe to say it, I picked Arizona (v Detroit) to be in and win the World Series this year.  The Arizona v. Colorado series will need to be sold to the rest on the NFL-loving public, but it should be exciting baseball.

What it is not????  Good news for the Giants.  Both teams are stacked with young AND good players!  I mean take off the names and put the numbers of Holliday, Tulowitski, Atkins, Helton and Hawpe vs. any NL team and gasp at how good they are and will likely continue to be.  And, that's with the humidor at play.  Colorado is no longer the launching pad that it has been since the team's entrance into the NL.

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
I cannot root for the Diamondbacks this year. It makes me unhappy when a team succeeds by luck. Normally I prefer the Dbacks to the Rockies. I like Eric Byrnes, I dig the late 80's Giants connections (when Melvin eventually goes, will he be replaced by Kirt Manwaring?).

But I can't get behind any team that plays that far over its head.

I rooted for the Rockies against the Phillies too. Two reasons for that 1)Shane Victorino is a punk 2)the phillies are a goddamn softball team!

I'll be rooting for the Rocks by default until they run into the tribe or the Sox.

Re: ... and I'm rooting for the Rockies
I feel the results to date fit perfectly with my surprise last spring that some folks here were making forecasts based on the out-of-date view that the Giants are in a weak division. I think the gap could go grow next year, which is why we may find ourselves struggling to emerge from last place even if we win more games. I have no problem rooting for the Rox to go all the way at this point. I'd root for the Tribe or Red Sox over the D'backs, but not over the Yankees or Angels.

New dilemma. Under normal circumstances I'd be rooting for the Indians to crush the Yankees tonight. But a good friend of the family just went into the hospital this weekend. He's very uncomfortable and facing exploratory diagnostic procedures tomorrow. He's passing the time tonight watching the Yankees, whom he loves. I guess I have to root for them to win this one for his sake. But I can still hope Clemens gets slapped around right?

It's your moral duty to hope Clemens gets slapped around. He can still pitch alright if it means your friend gets some relief, but for him to take a few slaps to the face would be YOUR consolation prize.

I'll root for the Rockies. I don't want the young players of the Dbacks to have success because they can haunt us for the next 15 years. Hopefully the Dbacks will fall short and make a couple of stupid trades after the season. The Rockies, on the other hand, won't be able to pay all of their talented youngsters and they will be back to doormats in a couple of seasons.
