Chad Tracy?

He's always killed us and while he's hardly a great player, he'd be worth a look in our sh1tty lineup. He can play 3B (albeit he's a butcher) but either way he can play at our positions of need. AZ is set in all his positions and I think he might even be non-tendered, or at least traded at a low value. Worth listening to

If he ever gets completely healthy again, he can be a great player. I would go after Mark Reynolds, though, if they'll take Lowry for him.

Re: Chad Tracy?
I would pass. Unless he became a part of a 1B platoon against RHP. He's also got some injury concerns. His 2005 was good but he hasn't done anything since then. Could he have peaked in 2005?

EqA's for Tracy

2004 - .254
2005 - .298
2006 - .264
2007 - .267

Calling him a butcher at 3B is an understatement. In 2006 he had a FRAA of -19.

Re: Chad Tracy?
i still have no faith in any defensive metric but i kind of agree with you.  He's below average, but an option nonetheless.  He isn't worth much more than a couple low ball middling prospects.

Re: Chad Tracy?
Middling prospects won't get the Giants Chad Tracy, because the Dbacks would be sending him within the division. It will cost the Giants more than it would cost other teams. That being said, I don't know why you guys don't like Chad Tracy. He's only 27 and hit .308 with 27 homers just two years ago. Yeah, he stinks defensively, but this team needs a bat more than it needs a glove. If he's healthy it would be a really good move. Sometimes I throw all the stats out the window and just judge how I feel when I see the guy playing against the Giants. With the game on the line when the Giants were playing the Dbacks, I just hated to see him coming up to bat.

Re: Chad Tracy?
Because he is a very blah option.  he's just about league average for everything except defense.  2005 was his only good year, outside of the one year he repeated triple A.

he's chad tracy.  just read the name and feel as you drift slowly off to sleep.  He has two first names, one of which is the biggest 'bro name ever and the other is a girl's name.

also, he plays for the diamondbacks so eff him.  and eric byrnes.

Why not just use Range Factor?

Both BIS and STATS have him at about average.

Re: FRAA?
Defensive metrics are still growing but you can get a pretty good feel on how well a player plays defense by comparing all the different stats, scouting reports, and watching them play.

despite all my best inclinations, watching copious amounts of film of the player's defensive play is still the best way in my opinion.

Re: No bueno
That is dead wrong. Steve Finley was 40 years old, Chad Tracy is 27. And in case you've forgotten, Steve Finley was acquired in a trade for Edgardo Alfonzo, and as bad as Finley was for the Giants that year, Edgardo was released by the Angels and then the Blue Jays. In that context, Finley was a good trade.

It would look like this (off the top of my head):

C: Paul LoDuca
1B: Dan Johnson (?)
2B: Jeff Kent
3B: Chad Tracy
SS: Khalil Green
RF: Terrmel Sledge
CF: Steve Finley
LF: Scott Hairston

P: Woody Williams

Re: Chad Tracy?
Mike Lowell in '08 = Ray Durham in '07. Oft injured old guy has career year in contract year (in major hitter's park nonetheless) then plays 80 games and hits .220. Get me anybody who will keep us from paying Mike Lowell $12M/year!

by joebirdie3 on Oct 5, 2007 7:06 AM PDT reply actions

Re: Chad Tracy?
I read somewhere that the owner of the Red Sox loves Lowell and would like to re-sign him. I would hope that this is true, but I'm not even concerned about it, because I believe the Giants would have zero interest in him. Even if Sabean believes Lowell is better than Pedro Feliz, the amount of money and years that Lowell is asking for will make Pedro look like a bargain.

Lowell IS better than Feliz, by a wide margin. Career batting: .280 / .344 / .468. And he's just as good with the glove.

Re: Chad Tracy?
But Lowell is going to be 34 and is asking for a 3-year deal worth twice as much annually that Feliz is asking for.

But if you're talking in terms of overall career, yeah, Lowell's far better.

Mike Lowell has an incredible knack of doing his best in the last year of his contract. Wonder why that is?? He IS better than Feliz, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Pedro winds up with the superior numbers next year, when Mike is in the beginning of some 3 yr 27 million dollar deal.

Alberto Callaspo
If we were going to take a diamondbacks 3rd baseman, how about Alberto Callaspo? His BA has been good at AAA for a few seasons, plus he has next to no service time so we could hold on to him for a good 6 years.

Re: Chad Tracy?
Chad Tracy is a better hitter than Feliz is, but Feliz's glove is worlds better than Tracy's.

I hear that the defense needs to be better, and I tend to roll my eyes.  When you're talking 10 runs of difference between one fielder and another, it isn't that big a deal, especially when the better fielder is far worse with the bat.

In this case, though?  Feliz has a good 3 wins on Tracy with the glove.  3 wins just on defense!  Crazy.  Tracy would have to hit really, really well to overcome that advantage, and he wouldn't be in Arizona anymore.

Mike Lowell?  Much better than Feliz.

Re: Chad Tracy?
Sure, he's played 1B in the past but I think myself, and most others, are concerned with his health. He just had that microfracture surgery a couple of weeks ago.

It sounds like they aren't really sure when he's coming back.

Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes said doctors performed a lateral release on the knee as well as microfracture procedure. A lateral release involves cutting tight structures to the outside of the kneecap that are causing the kneecap to tilt abnormally. Microfracture surgery is used to restore knee cartilage by creating tiny fractures in the adjacent bones, which causes new cartilage to develop.

Estimates on how long it could take Tracy to return are anywhere from four to eight months, according to manager Bob Melvin.

From - http://arizona.diamondbacks.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070921&content_id=2222311&vkey=ne ws_ari&fext=.jsp&c_id=ari

I'd take a look if he came cheap. He could platoon at 1B against RHP. But, I think his asking price might be more than he's worth.

IMO the Giants should spend as little as possible on players over 30.  By the time the Giants are good again, most of the over-30 group will be near the end of the line.
