MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review

Bowker and Romo and the organizational batter and pitcher of the year.  Pretty positive review of the Giants' system.

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
Nate the Great is a converted 3B? Any chance he'd be able to move back? It sure would answer the McCoven's age-old question:

"So can be play 3B?"

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
I was kinda hoping that Nate might try out some 3B in the AZL but I doubt it.  I don't think he's played there for a couple years and I doubt the Giants want to mess with him now.

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
Not necessarily true.  I don't know a whole lot about the reasoning/logic behind his move to the outfield, but he does have a pretty good arm and above average speed.  That sounds like an outfielder to most scouts, and that could be the primary reason he was moved out there.

Again, I don't know anything about the circumstances surrounding his move to the outfield.  This is just my speculation on the situation.

I'm glad to see Joey Martinez getting some ink. His 2007 wasn't as good as his 2006 season. I still think he's one to watch.

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
Baron, I'm curious what's made you bullish on Joe. As you may recall, I'm pulling hard for him because he was really nice to my very marginally talented teenage son when, by chance, we ended up assigned to him for pitching lessons at a local sports center here in New Jersey two winters ago. I also watched Joe throw some then and talked with him about his approach to pitching (Greg Maddux is his model). My take is that it's a long shot that he will make it all the way and that the absolute upside is marginal fifth starter, middle reliever. He'll need really superior control to go with his brains, good attitude and ok stuff. But, as we saw this year, he's not quite there.

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
Martinez has pitched over 160 innings in the last two seasons and improved on his 2006 strikeout numbers by almost twenty. His walks went up slightly in 07, and there's his much higher ERA this year too. How much of that relates to the Cal League being a hitter's league, I don't know.

For a 14th round guy in his second full year of pro ball, third year overall, I think he's doing a pretty decent job. I think he'll be in the CT rotation in 08.

I didn't go to any San Jose games this year. I have not seen Martinez pitch. Besides, I'm not sure I could give much of a scouting report on pitches because my eyesight is so terrible. I'd need to be standing right next to Martinez or catching him myself to tell what he throws.

I'm rooting for Joey too! His peripherals are pretty decent. He probably doesn't have the stuff, but who knows what could happen. And hey, we went/go to the same college.

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
Rule 5 pick hypothetical:

How many people here would trade Velez for Brian Buscher straight up?

I think I would, as it would mean I wouldn't have to watch Feliz hit anymore.

by Grant on Oct 3, 2007 3:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Buscher vs Velez
Are those two mutually exclusive?  I'm not sure how the minor league portion of Rule 5 works.  I was a bit surprised when I found out we had lost Buscher by that route.  I mean, was there really no room for him on the Fresno roster or whatever roster he had to be on?  On the other hand, he certainly hadn't shown any signs of becoming the hitter the Giants seemed to think they had drafted while he was in their system.

Maybe we all get too impatient with these guys?  John Bowker is another guy who looked for all the world like he wasn't going anywhere and then broke out this year in CT of all places. Ortmeier is another guy I left off my Giants Top 50 completely and look what he accomplished this year.  On the other hand, how many prospects who backslide in their progress recover to have a meaningful MLB career?  Not very many.

In short, I think Velez was a good pickup.  He's not the reason we let Buscher go.  We should have kept Buscher another season.

Re: Buscher vs Velez
Oh, I wasn't saying one begat the other. I'm just asking if we came out ahead in the game of Rule 5 musical chairs. We could have had both, which would have been even cooler.

Re: Buscher vs Velez
unfortunate we lost a potential starting 3rd baseman via rule 5.  It's easy for me to sit here and blame management for lack of foresight, and its a shame regardless if it was there fault or not.

Anyone have any info on rule 5 players eligible who could be potential difference makers?  And when does the 2007 Minor League Free Agent list come out?  I've been looking apparently its not set yet.

Don't throw balls, grow balls. Pitch to Barry.

Re: Buscher vs Velez
Yea, this really feels like a starting third baseman in the making:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28837

I'm not upset about losing Buscher in the Rule 5.  He honestly gave the Giants no reason to protect him at any point.  If he turns into something, bully for him, but I don't think the Giants made the wrong decision.  He's had one good year, so that could be as much a fluke as anything.

Velez, meanwhile, has had two good years and a much more solid major league debut.  I'll keep Velez, TYVM.

The Cube misses things sometimes.

He batting .259/.321/.366 over 130 games for Connecticut i 2006, with 23 doubles, 3 triples and 7 home run and with 39 walks and 75 strikeouts in 467 at bats.

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
Romo as pitcher of the year?

Romo had a great year, but I'd give it to Pucetas.  This isn't a prospect thing, it's performance, and Pucetas led all of (qualified) organized baseball in ERA as a starter.  Romo missed a good part of the year and was a reliever, and not even a closer until later in the season.

Don't get me wrong, Romo had a huge year, but Pucetas' was huger.

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
I think that Romo and Pucetas did great but I have to give it to Romo. Romo had 2 more strikeouts in almost 90 innings less... and the fact that Romo wasnt even in SJ the whole season says so much more!

Re: MILB Giants '07 Organizational Review
Nate originally played shortstop -- and pitched and even caught.  I have talked to the kid who moved him from shortstop to third base in Babe Ruth ball.

But the Giants moved Nate from third to right, just as they did three decades earlier with Jack Clark, another who apparently couldn't handle the hot corner.

My question for Brute would be this:  Is there a reason why Nate couldn't have been converted back to catcher to take advantage of his fine arm and his lefthanded bat, a rarity among catchers?
