Righetti Yankees Manager?

The ny daily news, not exactly the world's best news source, lists rags as a possible sleeper candidate for the yankees managerial position. Though i doubt this would actually happen, it is kind of interesting to note.

"Don Mattingly, Joe Girardi and Tony Peña remain the only official candidates for the Yankees' managerial job, but a few more names figure to surface in the coming days as the Bombers expand their search to replace Joe Torre."

"Ex-Yank Dave Righetti, the Giants' pitching coach since 2000, also reportedly has expressed interest in a managerial career, and his Yankees ties could make him an appealing candidate."

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
just idle newspaper speculation. Girardi is meeting with them today, Mattingley tomorrow and Tony Pena on Wednesday. Nobody else is scheduled for interviews. The Steinbrenners all love Mattingly and he's got the job unless he totally blows up when they're interviewing him.

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
Randy Messenger may have thrown hard last season with the Giants, but it didn't get him much in the way of results.  With the Giants Randy gave up 12.84 hit per nine innings.  Randy's career mark is 10.91 h/9.

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
Is that 12.84 walls hit per nine innings? Or is it teammates?

Holy non-sequitur Batman!

(in two ways: Throwing hard has nothing to do with hits allowed)

Righetti Yankees Manager- fine with me!
Fine man, nice guy, steady presence, etc.  As has been explored on here before, it's an open question just how much any pitching coach has to do with the success of the staff/team, and it's particularly hard to discern how this particular coach provides any value over any other pitching coach (e.g., HowTheyScored, or even E).  So if Righetti wants to go Gotham, I have zero sentimental or intellectual attachment to the guy.
With the season over, I release my adoptee Brian Sabean. Good luck in the world, little buddy.

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
don't "they" say that pitching coaches don't make good managers? Catchers apparently do and there are 2 on the list....Although, Tony Pena?
Bonds stands alone.

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
Joe Torre, FYI, was a former catcher, BTW.

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
I don't think Righetti is ready to leave the Bay Area yet.  He's made a family choice to stay here and I have to assume he's staying until his girls are old enough to go to college, and I don't think they have reached that age yet, though I don't recall exactly how old they are, perhaps they are there already and I'm just getting old...

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
For a guy "interested in managing", he didn't lobby hard either time for the Giants job, did he?

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
be careful what you wish for. The next pitching coach might be worse. Sabean may go the high school buddy route again.

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
Ugh. In addition to the family angle, why would he want to dip his feet in the hydrochloric acid vat that is the manager's office at Yankee Stadium? All that pressure, the ulcers, the berating, yelling, screaming and threats.

And that's just the interview with Steinbrenner (der Fuhrer).

I would think he likes being here, certainly less pressure and lower-profile.

Then again, who can beat a no-no on the 4th of July in Yankee Stadium? He got some mileage off of that show.

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
Well, I'm sure a $5 million contract would go a long way to releasing anybody from their usual hangups.

Just saying.

Re: Righetti Yankees Manager?
If Rags were to be considered in New York, I don't think he'll even sniff half of $5M.  I wonder how much he makes as pitching coach here.
