As unecessary as it sounds, can you disagree with the notion of Sabean having his eye on Riveira? We know the following things:
- Sabean has an infatuation with big-name, expensive closers (See Nen, 'Mando).
- Sabean likes old dudes.
- And on a more serious point, we know how much Sabean values the bullpen, who he claims was the reason they did so poorly this year.
In all seriousness, according to the Torre article on the front of ESPN.com, he's looking for 3 years, $40 million. Personally, considering they already have Hennessey-Walker-Wilson, they could find much better ways to spend the money. Yet, at the right price, I wouldn't be opposed to Rivera. His ERA was a bit higher than prior years (up to 3+ from 1+ on average), but his K/BB ratio was even a bit higher than previous years and he logged about the same amount of innings.
What do you guys think? Yeah, he's old and declining, but if for some weird reason he would come down to 2 years at, say, $15 million, I'd really have to give it some thought, considering how poor the free agent pool is this year. At what price would you grab him at?
