Open Pads/Rocks Playoff Game Thread

Yes, both teams are objectionable.  But it's still playoff baseball and as long as I'm watching it, we might as well have a place to talk about it.

5-4 in the 3rd. Is there any doubt that in a Rox-Phils series, a 6-5 final score would be considered a pitcher's duel?

I read somewhere there are like 20K unsold tickets for the DBacks home games in the NLDS. Given the number of Midwesterners who could fly out there (or who already live in AZ) it's probably going to feel like a home game for the Cubs.

Keeping Hoffman out of the game until a save situation is just inane.

I didn't realize 'til tonight the extent the Pads are full of decent to good players who were cast off from their previous teams: Bard, Barrett, Ensberg, Clark, Hairston, Bell, Bradley... it goes on and on. It's amazing.

Where is Jeff Francis? You can't save any bullets in a game like this.

Re: Open Pads/Rocks Playoff Game Thread
He did tag him.

You could tell the umpire knew that Holliday never touched the plate. That's why he hesitate.

Then the excitement of the moment overcame him, he saw the ball squirt loose and, in haste, called the runner safe for no particular reason since the issue wasn't the tag by the catcher but the fact that Holliday never touched the plate to begin with.

A typically horrendous call in a season of horrendous calls and a very unfortunate way to end a great game.

Hopefully, a play like this will finally force baseball's "brain trust" to grow a pair and stand up to the fat racist umpire union and get replay instituted like in every other legit sport.

Re: Open Pads/Rocks Playoff Game Thread
It wasn't even a particularly close call. But the umpire was somewhat blocked off by the catcher, so he didn't have much of an angle. You could tell that he knew in his gut that Holliday didn't touch it. That's why he waited so long to make the call.

When the ball came free, that was his opportunity to call Holliday safe even though it made no difference if the ball came free or not since Holliday hadn't touched the plate yet nor had the catcher tagged Holliday yet.

Re: Open Pads/Rocks Playoff Game Thread
Here's why I think it's not so clear:

Neither the 3rd-base camera nor the one behind the plate really shows what happened to Holliday's hand after Barrett's foot comes down.  The hand and the foot vanish into a cloud of dirt.

McClellan is standing in a perfect position to see where Holliday's left hand goes.  McClellan is a notorious late signaller.  He was in better position to see if Holliday's hand grazed the corner of the plate than we were.

So I disagree that it's clear that he didn't touch home plate.

Re: Open Pads/Rocks Playoff Game Thread
For some reason, the ump was waiting to make his call until he could see whether the catcher held onto the ball or not. But that makes no sense since the catcher never tagged Holliday in the first place.

Either Holliday touched the plate, and the ump would immediately signal safe, or he didn't. The tag by the catcher didn't come until after the ump make the delayed safe call.

A completely botched play by the ump on many levels. Par for the course.

No doubt many troglodytes will say this is what makes baseball so great. But I see little to cheer about when critical games are  decided by blown calls. This went on for many years in football until they realized that there was this new-fangled technology called video replay.

Maybe if there was as much betting on baseball as there is on football, we'd have had replay a long time ago.

Hoffman
Not that Rotoworld knows all, but they've got an interesting insight about Hoffman tonight:

"Perhaps tonight's outcome would have been different if Hoffman wasn't on his third warmup before coming in."

Pasta and a ballgame
The McCovey Crowd -- stunted and frustrated all year by the crapola home team -- rises to the occasion with a well articulated and generously populated playoff game thread.

Let's take time to tip our waitresses and thank our sponsors, Mike Benjamin and his boss, Grant "Briz" Soprano.

Thank Mike Benjamin??? For what, one five hit game??

I don't think so.

It was pretty bleak in here with just me and Wedge sitting around eating all the appetizers up. None of the rest of you commenters-come-lately showed up until things got exciting. Well, the Baron came and went with her date Chuck.

Just an incredible game.

I listened to the extra innings on Gameday Audio while watching Episode Six of The War. Final episode tomorrow night. The Germans got off to a hot start but the Allies are really coming on strong and are looking like they're about to put it away. NO SPOILERS!!!

Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not facist: THE RETURN OF SF Dugout

it only gets sweeter
Hoffman (4-5), who has 524 career saves, blew his seventh chance in 49 tries. On Saturday, he was one strike away from clinching a playoff spot when Tony Gwynn Jr. hit a tying triple for Milwaukee, which went on to win 4-3 in 11 innings.

Yes. On Saturday, Tony Gwynn's own blood beat Hoffman and forced the Padres into this game (after another loss on Sunday).

Suck it, Padres!

Think Tony Sr. huddled up with Jr. before that series, and stayed on cell standby before his kid's every atbat?

Tony knows Trevor.

Re: Open Pads/Rocks Playoff Game Thread
THIS IS SO FREAKING COOL.

I just got off the phone with my dad. He is amped. It's a family affair when it comes to the Rockies. I remember when they were building that gorgeous ballpark, and got to go into the construction of it. I remember the Blake Street Bombers -- all this was before I cared about sports. So now they're back and it's all good!

My dad said, "I was hoping you weren't anti-Rockies because they beat the Giants so many times." I said nah, the Pads beat us more, I think. ;)

Is it saying something about our psyche that the Rockies go down two runs and we automatically assume the Padres are going to win.

I think it's saying something about the all-time saves leader, though he ain't what he used to be.

Yes, it says something about our screwed-up psyches.

But it says more about our stinking team.
