Peter Gammons article about Bonds

Its ESPN insider:

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=2748896&name=gammons_peter

If you can't access it, basically Gammons says it was a pragmatic decision by Magowan to keep him. He also calls out the rest of the media for their ridiculous moralizing about the steriod issue. The best part of the article is the news at the bottom about Mando. Apparently the Giants are going to see how his knee is in Spring Training but that "winter ball encouraged them that Brian Wilson can close" and its possible they may still trade Mando to the Marlins.

Re: Peter Gammons article about Bonds
well, duh. Of course, it was a pragmatic decision to keep Bonds. I don't think they were taking some principled stance by re-signing the guy.

As for Mando, I've been hearing about this trade to the marlins for a couple months now (it seems) and his health is holding things up.

I vote for Brian Wilson for closer regardless of what Mando does.

We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Re: Peter Gammons article about Bonds
Bonds was the best cleanup hitter available at the time they first agreed to general financial terms.  It made sense as a baseball signing, whatever you may think of the total salary offered.

The rest of it has just been Peter Magowan auditioning for "Hamlet."

Re: Peter Gammons article about Bonds
But thank god there is at least one writer who will, without hysteria, simply report and analize, with reason and balance.  Kudos to Peter Gammons.

Re: Peter Gammons article about Bonds
Gammons is one of the few prominent baseball analysts who has really earned his reputation, alongside Bill James, Pete Palmer, and a few other guys who I probably forgot.

Re: Peter Gammons article about Bonds
The man since his recovery from an anuerism seems to have a different perspective on things. Near death experiences tend to do that. He likes unfairness no more than most. He just happens to see it a lot more clearly than some of his more outspoken peers.

Gammons a redoubtable Bonds Defender
I'd say, in your book, Gammons is no longer an effete East Coast journalist.

Gammons, strangely, has treated Bonds with charity since even before the Brain Implosion he suffered last year. There must be some other conspiracy behind this fair and equal treatment.

The highly trained McCovey moles are digging in to this mystery.

Don't get carried away, and make inferences that are not there. All Red Sox/Yankee fans are effete snobs.

Re: Gammons a redoubtable Bonds Defender
Even when it was clear that Gammons and the SAWKS were as close as two peas in a horrible, diseased pod I still respected the man for what he had to say. Dude's plenty smart. I am glad to see that has not suffered since his comeback.

Re: Peter Gammons article about Bonds
I once had a near death experience.  Luckily, when my life was on the line, Pujols took the AB for me and not ARod. :-)

Re: Peter Gammons article about Bonds
Like nostock brought up, Gammons also brought up benitez a little:

"The Giants will wait until the spring to see how Armando Benitez is throwing and how much flexibility he has in his knee, but winter ball has encouraged them that Wilson can close. Then there is last year's top draft pick, Tim Lincecum.

"So Benitez could still be traded, possibly to Florida."

He mentioned earlier Brian Wilsons name too, so he must be playing well.  I like the sound of that; any Giants team w/o Mando is a great one, esp if we have someone who can close if he doesn't.
