Trevor Wilson ?

The Giants have announced the minor league coaching staffs for 2007.

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20070129&content_id 1789206&vkey=pr_sf&fext.jsp&c_id=sf

The Arizona club has a new hitting coach. The staffs in Salem-Keizer, Augusta, San Jose and Connecticut remain the same. In Fresno there is a new manager (Dan Rohn, from the Seattle organization) replacing Shane Turner, who becomes the new roving outfield and baserunning coach (Darren Lewis is no longer with the organization, it seems). And Fresno has a new pitching coach - Mike Caldwell (who the Giants once traded Willie McCovey for).

There is no mention anywhere of Trevor Wilson - neither in the press release nor in Draper's piece (unrelated newsflash: in the new Mailbag Draper reveals that Justin Hedrick is a lefty), and a quick Google search turned up nothing. Anyone know anything? Wilson was such a great coach and overall cool guy, what a bummer if he left the organization.

Re: Trevor Wilson ?
There seems to be some difference of opinion about just how good of a pitching coach Trevor Wilson is/was here among the McCoven.  He seemed to help several young pitchers by teaching them the cutter, but so far that hasn't really translated into big league success for any of them.  He worked with Matt Cain and Merkin Valdez.  Impossible to tell if he had any impact positively or negatively with either one.

He is a very friendly guy who came over to talk with me and my family at SJ games in SoCal when he saw we all were wearing Giants gear.  He also helped us get Matt Cain's autograph on a game ball. That one little gesture probably did more to make my daughter's baseball and Giants fans than anything else.

I wish him well in whatever he is doing.

Re: Trevor Wilson ?
There was no mention of Trevor Wilson in the local Fresno Bee newspaper either. I liked Wilson last year, and the players seemed to enjoy him as a coach as well.

Re: Trevor Wilson ?
It may have been his pot belly. I remembered Wilson as a player and ,man ,he is badly out of shape now.

Nice guy, sure. Technique, maybe.
But he was such a freaking headcase (not unusual among lefty pitchers, I realize) that I am unconvinced that he's the guy who should be teaching youngsters The Job of Pitching.

OTOH
Sometimes a guy like that might have done some self analysis that might help a younger pitcher with the same kinds of issues whereas someone with nerves of steel might not be able to comprehend that anyone would have headcase problems.

I don't think any of us, or at least very few of us, have any real basis for judging the effectiveness of a pitching coach except by some very crude observations of whether pitchers improve under their tutelage.  Trevor's most specatcular success was with Brian Burres in teaching him the cutter.  Brian may not have enough native ability to translate that into a major league career.   Otherwise it's a bit of mixed bag.  He seemed to have good pitching staffs in San Jose in a hitter's league.  OTOH, the Fresno staff pretty much stunk last season.  That may not have been Trevor's fault, though.

Re: Trevor Wilson ?
I agree. It is hard to judge a pitching coach's effectiveness especially in the minor leagues where pitchers are working on new pitches or deliveries or just building up arm strength. It appeared the players liked him, which could mean Wilson is doing a great job or he didn't work them hard enough.

Alfredo Simon?
Somebody over on the Giants Message Board said that Trevor said something last season about wanting to spend more time with his family.  Well, I guess having to work with Alfredo Simon for a season might just make the ol' family time seem that much more important.

Re: Alfredo Simon?
I remember when Trevor Wilson was with Salem-Keizer a few seasons ago he said in a radio interview that he was willing to be a pitching coach in short-season because it allowed him to be with his family a lot more than being with any full-season team allowed.  I was surprised when he subsequently went to full-season affiliates the last couple years.
