Radio Pregame Show

Am I the only one out there who listens to the radio pregame show? I, personally, tune in every day, and enjoy the whole hour (except maybe the broken English of Felipe Alou, but that's gone now). I only discovered it last year. How long has it been out there?

Re: Radio Pregame Show
I loved Felipe's garbled radio show. He reminds me of my ancient grandfather, barely intelligible and entertaining for that reason.

As far as I know the pregame show (with Diamond Notes, the manager interviews, etc) has been around since I started listening to Giants baseball on the radio since 1996.

Re: Radio Pregame Show
Dood. The Giants have had pregame shows since Russ and Lon in 1958 when they were on KSFO. It started 20 minutes before the game. Lon did most of the player interviews. Over the years, it has lengthened out quite a bit. Which I love too. Think about it:
You're tooling down some interstate or stuck in traffic and voila you get a chance to listen to:

Sean Hannity
Michael Savage
Ralph Barbieri
Bad FM
The same mp3s you've had for weeks.
or
Kruk, Kuip, Fleming, Miller, MLB players, Managers and just plain old baseball talk.
During baseball season, I have 11 station presets to 680, and one to 1550 for the As, just because anything baseball is better than sports talk radio.

Ken Korach on the A's radio side isn't too bad. I miss Bill King, though.

Keep Your Voice Low
(King was extraordinary, and influenced Greg Papa, also a first-class broadcaster. But these opinions are taboo here. If questions are asked, I don't know you.)

Re: Keep Your Voice Low
I figure since my kind (sportswriters) is readily villified here and I've mentioned that I support the Athleticos without fear of retribution, I don't have much left to lose.

Re: Keep Your Voice Low
I'm with you Moggeee in thinking Papa's a good one. His pipes, versatility and ability to convey excitement at the right times are rare.  When I moved up here and heared him doing Warrior games, I couldn't beleive how good he was.

I've failed to understand the Papa-hate here, but I guess it might be a feeling that his baseball knowldege isn't up to par with the great ones.

Re: Keep Your Voice Low
The problem is he's not great. Greatness is what Giants fans are used to getting out of their broadcasters.

Re: Radio Pregame Show
Dude...you need to get yourself some tunes.  I'm not saying that listening to the pre-game show is a bad thing, but I'm getting on average 5-10 new songs per week on iTunes.

Felipe Alou Show
The only thing I will miss about Felipe leaving is his pregame show.  It was the best thing about having his as our manager.  I loved hearing him talk about the opposing pitcher the Giants were facing that day, "Well, you know, dis guyyy..." I only wish the show was on Sirius so I could pause and rewind.

The combination of fantastic insight with incoherence was something we might not ever get to witness again, unless Michael Spinks manages the Giants in 2010.

Re: Radio Pregame Show
I love "Kruk and Kuip on Baseball".  It gives them a chance to talk about whatever they want.  Sometimes it's a stance on a serious subject, sometimes it's sharing an old story, sometimes it's just silly stuff.  It's nearly always interesting and usually provides a good  insider's look at baseball.

I loved K&KoB
I also just "discovered it" (never listened before) but I think it's great.
Here's to a good 2007. Or 2008. Or 2009. Or 2010. Or...

Re: I loved K&KoB
All the other segments are nice, but Kruk & Kuip is the thing that keeps me listening. It's insightful and funny. I only wish I could get my hamds on the recordings.

Re: I loved K&KoB
A subscription to Gameday Audio at mlb.com gives you access to that season's whole archives of games, including the pregame and postgame shows.

For what it's worth, I really like the Postgame Rap (or is it Wrap?), and even if I get home from school and I know how the game turned out, I'll log onto mlb.com and listen to that part of the Postgame Show.

Re: I loved K&KoB
When I drive to a game, I can watch the last out and get to my car (during the re-cap) in time for the post-game wrap if I walk fast.

Here's a subtle little thing that I wonder if anyone else has ever noticed.  When Miller does the game re-cap, they play a highlight and, especially if it's a highlight with Miller making the call, he says "Ye-eah" when the highlight is over as if he's agreeing with himself.  It's an example of the genius of Miller and always makes me smile.  Anyone else notice that?

Re: I loved K&KoB
I've noticed that too, but never paid much attention to it. It's just one of those Jon Miller things, like you said. The rest of the country can't really comprehend how good he is, because they don't listen to him every day.

As for the radio, when I go to games, I bring my decade-old Walkman with me. That way, I can walk back leisurely to the car. I would have thrown the old Walkman away years ago, except for the AM radio. iPods should really come with AM radios. If they did, I would be the first person to buy one.

One word for Miller: Superb
Touches like the one you mention, the inflection of his voice, his ready humor, the way he draws his partner into the conversation and never lets his ego dominate....there is so much to like about Miller.

Another broadcaster who gets a lot of love here is Hank Greenwald. But Greenwald's last season (1996) -- when he was tired of it all while the Giants were putting in a third consecutive losing season -- put a stain on his body of work.

Hank was tired, and impatient for early retirement. His humdrum style that year reflected it.
