Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote

I think Will Clark has this one in the bag.  Anyone else?  Does Kelly Downs have a shot?

Re: Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote
I'd say top five will be Clark, Krukow, Uribe, Thompson and Mitchell.

The winner will likely be Krukow or Clark.

Re: done.
Holy!  He pitched two shutout innings in 1993.  Two HITLESS shutout innings.

Re: done.
Also surprising is the fact that his pitching appearance was apparently the only time he took the field that year.

I'm at a loss to explain how, in his last season with the Yankees, he appeared in 1 game at shortstop (but for 0 innings) and played 1 inning at first (but in 0 games)...

Re: done.
I don't think so, since they were fielding stats. In any case it wouldn't account for the 1-inning-in-0-games anomaly...

Cleo- if the 2008 Giants sign Juan Uribe, is the "ooo-reebay" chant allowed to make a comeback?

Hmmm.  I think it would have to be retired, in deference to Jose.

It was basically The Will Clark Show then. Although I loved and still love Chili.

Caveman, Hackman, Candyman, The Thrill, Dravecky, Big Daddy, Speier, and Chilli.

One of my favorite teams ever...maybe my most favorite ever.

We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

The Cards Folded
More than 1962, 1989 or 2002, that '87 Giants team could have won the World Series.

The NL champ had only the upstart Twins to beat --and the Cardinals were strangely not up to the task, after getting big breaks against the Giants.

Bastards.

Re: Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote
I'll never forget that one time we had the game on and my mom (not a big baseball follower) blurted out "Who names their kid, Chili?"

I had to tell her, "his real name is Charles."

We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Re: Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote
I loved Will "The Thrill" Clark and Matt Williams.  But you have got to give the sentimental vote to Dravecky.  Eventhough he didn't snap his arm for a couple of more years, just knowing that it happened still gives me chills.

Re: Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote
At the time he first came up, I just couldn't stand Matt Williams. He was so bad at the plate (boy, would he fish at those low and away sliders) and never got it going until the 2nd half of '89. I really admire the way he stuck with the ups and downs and eventually became one of the great players in the game, though.

Re: Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote
Hey, Matt Williams in '89 sounds a lot like Pedro Feliz in, well, pick a year. Maybe in a few years, when he's 38, Pedro will be a feared, respected batsman, do a fine Babe Ruth impression, and lose all his hair.

I'm with Jack Clark; just knowing now what was in store for Dave Dravecky made me vote for him just now. But what a fun team to follow!

I picked Robby as Well
Oh, man! What a great team. Every guy was a good player, either then or used to be or in the future, but what memories. Tough to pick only one.

Bob Melvin?
Only a Giants catcher would pick him. He was a good defensive catcher, but, could not hit.

Re: Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote
Don't forget that Kevin Mitchell was on that team. I remember he hit 2 homeruns in his first game as a Giant against the Cubs in Wrigley. After that performance, I was sold on him.

Re: Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote
Don Robinson was a blast--a good pitcher who could really rake...I saw him almost hit two home runs in a game; he missed the second one by a couple of feet left of the foul pole. Plus he used to wear jogging shoes on his off days shagging fly balls in batting practice. Looked like a guy who hopped onto the field wearing a uniform he picked up at a sporting goods store.

That really was a fun team, but I wonder: is it more fun now that it's in the past? If McCC was around back then, would a bunch of Giants fans be online bitching about Chili Davis never living up to the hype of his rookie year? About Kelly Downs not being able to stay healthy? I'm sure we'd find something if we could go back in time, no?

Re: Favorite 1987 Giant -- Vote
My favorite Giant IN 1987 was, beyond a doubt, Chili Davis. I loved the young Giants like Clark, Thompson, and Williams, but Chili was still the heart of the Giants going into the year.
