OT - Warriors Trade

Dunleavy, Murphy, Diogu, and a throw in for Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, Sarunas Jaskjhjhvis, and a throw in

There is some discussion over at:

http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/

I find it hard to put into words how much I like this trade.

I would have traded Duleavy straight for a swift kick in the groin. But to get two players who will play D? I need a new word for it.

I say Sabean subcontracts the Benitez matter to Mullin.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
You think Mullin was responsible, or Nellie?  I'm thinking Nellie.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
Mully's had a well-documented <del>hard-on</del> jonesin' for Harrington, and Mully's proven to be a fairly bold GM when it comes to trading. (Not so much signing restricted FAs, though.)

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
Dunleavy and Murphy definately weren't fitting in this year.

Sad to see Diogu, go.  After a promising rookie year this year he never  was given a chance.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
Awesome trade. Getting Harrington is pretty sweet. Getting rid of the Murphy and Dunleavy contracts is just icing on the cake.

Stephen Jackson is nuts though. Hopefully he doesn't shoot anybody while he's with the Warriors.

but what do I do with my Dunleavy jersey now?

Put it in a safe place, and wait to add your Armando Benitez jersey and Kwame Harris jersey when the time is right. Oh so right.

You could use a Sharpee to draw a tiny hyphen between the n and the l, and then keep wearing it.

Of course, you'd be forced to explain to people that you broke his name up into two parts that both describe his exit. "Done? Leave-y!"

Like a tribute.

I Was Hoping It Was Steven Jackson
I was hoping it was Steven Jackson the Rams' running back. He would work well with Frank Gore. Stephen Jackson the basketball player is a problem waiting to happen for the Warriors. I saw where Harrington had been traded for Jackson at one point in their career.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
So does getting Jackson mean the team makes no effort to keep Pietrus?

I'm very happy that Mullin did not do a deal that involved moving Ellis or Biedrins.  A deal for Iverson.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
I would imagine that this will make it physically easier to keep Pietrus. Harrington/Jackson make less than Dunleavy/Murphy, and while I'm not sure this will give the team much flexibility to pay Pietrus, there will also be another salary slot open next year (the Lithuanian throw-in's $4M contract will expire while Diagu continues to get paid). And if the team needs to move a contract to add Pietrus, the two new contracts should be easier to move than the old ones.

Oh... wait a minute... I know little about the NBA and don't have the slightest understanding of the league's salary rules. I'm just so excited to see Dunleavy go that I'm babbling. Sorry.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
The Warriors don't improve that much salary wise.  Murphy is owed $50 million over five years, Dunleavy $45 million over five years.  Meanwhile, Harrington is owed $36 million over four years, Jackson $32 million over four years.

In the Warriors case, it means they are still way over the salary cap, but are able to exit a year earlier.  However the year that they can exit is four years away.

The Warriors can sign Pietrus regardless if they had made this trade or not.

I don't think this is such a good trade for the Warriors.  I wouldn't categorize either Harrington or Jackson as good players. That the new contracts are not quite as hainus, is negated by the fact that the new players are somewhat older.

The key to this trade is Diogu.  He's only 23 and has very good offensive ratings.  However, he's currently a defensive hole and may not garner much playing time from a defensive oriented coach like Carlisle.  But his future will probably be the best way to judge this trade.

The Warriors might be a somewhat ahead in this trade, sans the loss of Diogu.  But if Diogu turns out to be "the one that got away", the Warriors will regret this trade.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
GiantJim, that's the best summary I've seen of the salary component, thanks.

I also think Diogu is the biggest talent loss, but I don't think he would become a star under Nellie.  So even if his star rises somewhere else, it doesn't mean that's the player we lost.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
On KNBR yesterday, I heard Nellie say he's a nice player with some skills and athleticism, but as a inside post player, he'll always be undersized at 6'8".

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
Its a positive trade for the W's, but IMO not a slam jam no-brainer like most people do.

My gripe is Harrington, he's a bit......Felizish.  Puts up nice numbers but if you look a little more closely they're not that great.  Inaccurate volume shooter (though good % this year) that turns the ball over, generally plays a selfish game reliant on isolations.  Year in and out ranks in the bottom-10 of Hollinger's efficiency stats on ESPN.  He is a great athlete that can run the court from the PF though, and if Nellie can reign him in then it could really work.

Murph and Dunleavy may get it together, may not, who cares, imagine the smile on Cohan's face when he realizes he doesn't have to sign a couple dozen more $500,000 checks for those goofs this year.  Diogu could be a great player, I like him, wish him the best.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
Good point about Harrington, but I think with Davis, Richardson, Ellis, Pietrus and Biedrins on the team, the offense will hardly be built around Harrington.  If anyone can reign him in, it's Nellie.  Other than Webber, I don't think he's ever let a player call the shots.  Davis sure bought into things this season.

As an impartial Kings fan....
I thought the Warriors got murdered on this deal.

Maybe Harrington is a better fit for Nellie's system, but its hard to argue he's a better basketball player than Murphy. Jackson and Dunleavy are pretty close, except Stephen Jackson is insane.

All that would be fine, and the Warriors would save a year of bad contracts and get a little better defense, but they tossed in Diogu, who IMO is the best/most valuable player in the whole deal.

Some of us thought Dunleavy was insane to wear that stupid headband thing.  To see him with that pouty look while he was constantly pushing his hair behind his ears drove me batty.

Ike...
As an ASU student, I am sad to see my man Ike go.  Like a fool, I bought his Warrior jersey so I could wear it around campus, that was fun for the last 11 months.  Bummer, but I still like the other parts of the deal.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
Warriors got what they need, which is more inside scoring. I know Jackson doesn't shoot that high a percentage, but he is a much better post player and Dunleavy and his % goes up once he goes inside. Having another guy who can post up at the end of games will give the W's a beter option than just chucking up 3's, which is why they lose a lot of close games and can't hold onto leads late.

Harrington, while not a better rebounder than Murphy is more likely to play defense and score in the wide open offense that W's now run under Nellie. He can even play center in a small lineup.

Even if Jackson is a little insane, the W's really need that. They are considered to be quite soft and adding him and Harrington goes a long ways to change that image, though losing Ike hurts, too. He just didn't fit in here.

Also, look for Powell to get more time at PF than he ever would in Indiana.

The W's get deeper in this trade, which they also need.

We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Harrington, (1) while not a better rebounder than Murphy is more likely to (2) play defense and (3) score in the wide open offense that W's now run under Nellie. (4) He can even play center in a small lineup.

But remember, (3) and (4) were part of Murphy's presason hype.

Stephen Jackson is a THUG.  For that reason alone I love this trade.

Oh and I hate Dunleavy with a passion.  I almost put a chair through the TV when they drafted him.

Thug
There are aggressive players and then there are those destined to have a felony or two in the next year. I don't like this trade mainly because of Jackson's off court problems.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
Okay.  As many have already voiced, I do believe that getting rid of Ike will come back to bite us in the ass.  I mean, this is the Warriors we're talkin bout here.  No deal done by a Golden State Exec will look good in twenty years.  In fact, it will most likely appear short-sighted and idiotic.  Such is life as a W's fan.

Also, I really don't see Jackson working well in Nellie's offense.  The guy drags ass up and down the court.  These are two opposing forces here.  Whereas Nellie favors the Run-and-Gun, Jackson clearly prefers the Gun-and-Run.

Re: OT - Warriors Trade
You're looking at this much differently than I am. I see this primarily as a way to get rid of two contracts that handcuffed the team.  Murphy and Dunleavy simply didn't fit Nellie's style.  He tried to use them as starters, but they played their way out of the starting lineup.  Their contract were going to keep the Warriors from doing things they need/want to do.

If this trade improves their chances of keeping Biedrins, Ellis and Pietrus, it's worth it. Diogu might end up being the best of the eight players involved.  That said, I see much more potential in the other three and don't think the team could have kept them all.

Harrington can be a ball hog, but can contribute more than Murphy in Nellie's style.

Jackson might be a problem child, but maybe he'll somewhat clean up his act like Sprewell did after leaving the Warriors.  Artest has been a better citizen since going to the Kings.  He'll be a backup behind Pietrus, anyway, so it's not like the team is depending on him to make this trade a success.
