Ryan out as ND Cal US Attorney?

Anybody subscribe to the WSJ online?

This could be the result of his graceful handling of the BALCO situation, or it could be because nobody likes him.

Re: Ryan out as ND Cal US Attorney?
The only mention of BALCO in the article:

"The departure of Mr. Ryan, who faced some internal criticism for his office operations, is less surprising. He gained a high profile because of the Balco steroids case and the options-backdating cases and in recent months began discussing stepping down."

Re: Ryan out as ND Cal US Attorney?
This is not good news for Barry Bonds. It looks like the Administration is pushing even more partisan prosecutors to take over from mostly career Attorneys. Given the push from the top on steroids, I can't see how reason begins to prevail over politics.

A Bigger Star Than Barry
To hell with BALCO and Bonds -- only millions of dollars are at stake there.

This guy Ryan has probably damaged Apple Inc. stock to the tune of ten ticks to the upside -- nine billion dollars or so.

Ryan has been playing a cat and mouse game with a bigger Bay Area blockbuster than Barry. He's been after Steve Jobs (Apple CEO, for those just emigrating) in the nationwide "options backdating" scandal -- a federal investigation focusing on major publicly traded companies.

Jobs just might be fuzzily guilty of this petty infraction, but, like Bonds, who -- besides Apple's competitors -- wants a superstar like Jobs thrown out of the game?

Answer: An underpaid government hack, running an office where his entire staff wants to quit on him.

Maybe after Ryan cleans out his desk, sanity will prevail, Jobs will prevail, and it will be safe to invest in Apple again.

Re: A Bigger Star Than Barry
Why would you think replacing Ryan with an appointee that needs no Senate confirmation, and therefore is more likely to be a political hack (check out the incoming Arkansas appointee) would help Apple? If I want to keep Al Gore out of the 2008 elections (which I don't) I would wish greater and greater legal troubles on a company which he sits on the board of directors. I would also love to see one of Al's closest allies in the business world occupied with a prosecution for the next few years - regardless of the truth of the allegations. I'm not a big conspiracy guy, but I'm betting this isn't good news for Barry or Apple.

btw, I'm typing this on my mac.

Say, Hey. Apple reports earnings today
When the Grim Reaper's local HQ gets its head chopped off, it's gotta be a short-term plus for Apple.

That's all a trader cares about (even if Jobs himself gets beheaded six months from now when the Fed office reorganizes itself out of the chaos).

And since investors are always looking for anecdotal evidence that supports their stock selections...I think we've found one on the Chronicles.

After SayHey says he's posting with a Mac, that's gotta mean that Apple, Inc. is set to move in a lusty upward direction...

So will I be charged with insider trading if I buy Apple stock now?

Re: Ryan out as ND Cal US Attorney?
you know bvsh is systematically firing US attorneys (i think it's up to 10 now) by way of the Patriot Act, right?  Ryan is a casualty of presidential self-pardon.

Re: Ryan out as ND Cal US Attorney?
The WSJ article said Dems in Congress are going to try to repeal the piece of the Patriot Act that lets the Prez hire n fire US Attys without judicial oversight. Before the Pat. Act, there was oversight. The Bush Admin says the new law was necessary to provide "continuity" in prosecuting terrorists. Mmm-kay.
Never mind whatever I do!!! Fan is my tresure!!!

Put down the hemlock.
Howard Mintz, SJ Mercury News) had this to say:
"Ryan's tenure has been marked by internal chaos and controversy within his office balanced against his lead role in some of the nation's most high-profile federal prosecutions, including the Balco steroid scandal, the stock options backdating probe and, more recently, his decision to pursue the Hewlett-Packard spying scandal.

Rumors that Ryan might be planning to resign have circulated within his office for months, particularly since the Justice Department sent a team of auditors to the Bay Area last fall to interview current and former prosecutors about his management. Whether Ryan resigned or was asked to resign, his status has been on shaky ground as a result of a constant stream of criticism from current and former prosecutors who've questioned his insular leadership style."

--------------------------------------------

Kevin Ryan was referred to as Bush's point man in another article.  I don't see him as being run out of town because he was going against Bush from I've read.  Pete Wilson appointed him to a judgeship. He left that job to take his current position when Bush appointed his predecessor Robert Mueller to head up the FBI.

I think the guy is getting run out because he is a grandstanding hack wasting resources.

Re: Put down the hemlock.
All of which is probably true, but given the fact the Bushies want the steroid story to be a very big deal (they did put it in a State of the Union speech,) how can a handpicked successor who needs no confirmation be of comfort to Barry? Perhaps I'm only seeing the huge black cloud obscuring the silver lining, but if I'm Barry I'm thinking more court dates.

Re: Put down the hemlock.
Sure they want steroids to be a big deal. Look how much of our store of collective social outrage Barroids manages to suck up. Outrage that might more usefully be applied, I don't know, could we say "elsewhere"?

Re: Ryan out as ND Cal US Attorney?
Looks like the big W didn't like the headlines he was seeing. Either he wants more butts in jail or he wants less headlines about steroids and stock trading. We shall find out soon....

Suddenly toothless Feds
Ryan's outfit has just offered the Hewlett Packard spy offenders a wildly lenient plea bargain, reducing the many felony charges to a single count, and a misdemeanor at that.

The spies have got to take that offer.

(In a comparable development, the Feds are studying the possibility of dropping any potential charges against Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and instead, offering him a season pass to Marine World.)
