So Long Tim, and thanks for all the Saves?
2003 was great and it sucks to see you leave in such bad shape but I am glad you had the respect to call it a career instead of trying to limp through another year.

One last Timmah!

Re: So Long Tim, and thanks for all the Saves?
Actually I've only read the first one, about six years ago and I was only even mildly amused at the time.

I've been meaning to give it another try, because my tastes and sense of humor are both so much different now then they were then and the books really are short enough to read in a day, but I just haven't gotten it.

Hey, I was stuck in hell--I mean, an ungodly line at Fry's Electronics--on my lunch break. I was physically unable to beat you at your own game.

I gotta get a Palm Pilot or something...

Palm Pilot
When I was your age, the phrase "palm pilot" had a whole different meaning.

Hey!  I am not QUITE the generation who wore onions on their rope belts because that was the style at the time.

But yes, get off my lawn (shaking fist with one hand while holding a glass of Velma's unusual lemonade with the other).

In 6 months or so, I'll be scooping y'all with an Apple iPhone (please don't sue me, Cisco!).

Like Bonds, it's a GameChanger
Truly, Brute. And let's get our hero worship straightened out here: Steve Jobs absolutely ruled the planet yesterday when he unveiled the ultra-chic and sleek iPhone at Macworld.

The Palm Pilot is the also-ran of the business, already an afterthought in the ultra-competitive handheld sector. Now, Apple INC. (Woohoo) will bury them, and all the others.

See you and my I-Phone in June.

Re: Like Bonds, it's a GameChanger
Palm is dead.  Blackberry is dead.  Long live iPhone.

However, Steve Jobs...let us load our own apps onto the iPhone, and you will sell twice as many.

by Skaldheim on Jan 11, 2007 11:41 AM PST up reply actions

You have to wait for the iPhone, Next Generation
Jobs has gotta save some upgraded features to sell at next year's Macworld, for the second-generation iPhone.

That answers the question about where they're going to find the 40-man roster spot for Ortiz. But they'll need at least one more for Bonds, assuming they finally do get the contract signed...

Re: Tim Worrell retires
Driving home he was talking on KNBR. About his career. About the good times. About the bad times. About how his retirement was his Christmas present to his wife and how he took the momentos of the paperwork, put them in a scrapbook for her. About how hard it is to finally accept its over, but the sense of relief to his family, was consolation and he was glad for them in that way. And he did not want to spend the last year just hanging on like so many do, in denial. And how classy the Giants were to him before, during, and after. He hasn't even gotten to baseball specific rehab yet and he has had numerous setbacks, so that part of it was pretty clear cut.

What a truly special guy Timmah has been. So it was sad. Yet it reminded me that when all is said and done, the records are one thing. The wins and losses are another. But it always begins and ends with the relationships. And the way the Giants treated he and his family while he was here. No talking points this, but real sincere and he cited examples. He was real open about hoping the Giants will bring him back in some capacity so he can pass on 14 years worth of experiences to the younger guys.

Timmah may or may not have been many things, a bullshitter is not one of em. So I'll miss him the same way I missed Gardy and Dravecky, and Kruk. At least they got to retire in Giants laundry. All, in all, not a bad career Timmah. Not a bad career at all.

Re: Tim Worrell retires
Regardless of how unbearable for everybody the last two years with Felipe have been, Sabean, Baer and Magowan must have treated the prideful old skipper fairly well for him to have returned so quickly as a special assistant.

The Giants are well-known in the business for this type of good feeling from their problematic employees and their ex's.

One of the few guys to leave with an attitude was Dustan Hermanson. But he parlayed his pissiness into a World Series ring.

He owes us one, then...

The Catcher To Be Named Never also left with a sizable chip on his shoulder (Michael Barrett later tried to help him remove it, a gesture that was misinterpreted.) He owes us at least one.

A genune Two-Faced Bastard
"Never" Pierzynski was making kissyface to Sabean after the cancerous 2004 season here, hoping to be resigned.

He had a good gig here, and knew it. He ultimately signed for a million dollar salary cut in Chicago.

He only started making hooting noises at SF after the Sox started winning in 2005.

Re: A genune Two-Faced Bastard
Are you implying that AJ Never, was a phony, salacious, lying inbred weasel with the moral gps of a serial peeping tom?  That his little rodent-like snearing countenance, the one topped with the receding hairline and bottom-bordered by a like-wise receding chin, reminded us all of the Budweiser Ferret?  Are we to take away from your little insinuations that this acne-brained, ego-addled, fece-breath is worth little more than a one sentence reference in honor of the great pugilist Michael Barrett?

I just can't imagine anybody even wasting an iota of energy to even acknowledge the existence of such a waste of protoplasm, let alone actually writing about him.

I felt dirty and degraded just typing his name.

But I felt I had to show that, even in this extreme case, a player who was roundly considered a tumor was STILL treated well during his stay here.

Sincere kudos to Tim Worrell for putting his career out of its misery. All is forgiven. I even forgive Todd Worrell for swiping the NL ROY award away from Robby Thompson.

Okay, so Worrell isn't the altruistic saint we all thought he was. Tim basically decided not to re-hab, as he was getting paid regardless.

Re: Tim Worrell retires
Given the timing, it's pretty easy to imagine that the Giants were planning on dropping Worrell for the 40-man space anyway, and that they approached him giving him the opportunity to retire instead of be dumped. The money would be the same either way.

Wanted to share this...
I posted this on my blog today but for those that didn't catch it I thought I would repost it here too. This is probably one of my favorite Worrell moments, mainly because I got to experience it in person.
I specifically remember this game against the dreaded Angels that I got to watch in person at Mays Field. Worrell had just recently returned from his stint on the DL and was in danger of losing his job because of his ineffectiveness. He comes in the 8th in a close game, the Giants are up 3-2, with the Angels threatening to take the lead with runners on 1 and 2. Worrell gets the 2nd out with a fielders choice that pushes the runner on 2nd to 3rd. The Angels bring in Juan Rivera to pinch hit for the pitchers spot. Worrell and Rivera battle for what seems like a 10 pitch AB, Rivera fouling off pitches staying alive and Worrell throwing everything hes got. The crowd is on its feet and really cheering hard for Worrell, everyone wants to see Timmah do well. Finally, Worrell freezes Rivera with a inside fastball for a called strike three and the crowd goes nuts. The Giants go on to win the game, good triumphs over evil, all is right in the world. It was awesome.

Classic, Skaldheim.

A voice of reason like Grant's would have no chance against the rabble that is supporting Bonds on that diary gone mad.

I am personally taking refuge on this thread, after suffering the slings, arrows and abrasions of outrageous Bonds Spin.
