My good friend, and A's fan, who I work with just told me he scored playoff tickets (ouch) His offer reminded me of how I became a Giants fan.
The last time I went to a A's post season game was Game 1 of the 1988 world series, the Gibson Game. I have hated the A's ever since because it has given Dodger fans that moment of baseball joy forever. I was only 13 and just a fledgling Giants fan. My family had just moved to Modesto from Denver that summer and I got into rooting for the Giants because I had very few new friends and the games were always on TV. The other reason I rooted for the Dodgers was because it pissed off my old man, you see, and most of my family, are Dodger fans.
We went to a few games at the Stick that year, all games against the Dodgers, and I got a first hand look at the rivalry. Unfortunately the Dodgers won all the games we went to that year and my Dad would always say "it's not too late to root for a winner."
When my brother from LA got us tickets to see the WS game I was excited to go just to see the A's beat the Dodgers, as everyone was predicting. I was happy for most of the game until that swing of Gibson's bat. The Gibby HR hurt me but what really crushed me was what my dad said after the Dodgers won the whole thing. Jokingly he said, "if you keep rooting for the Giants you will never get to feel what I am feeling right now because they will never win a world series."
I have been a fanatical Giants fan ever since. This year has been a disappointment but I know I can handle it, because I have been through much worse.
