You're just yanking my chain, right?

An evil little voice inside my head says, "Wouldn't he be eligible for the postseason roster as a replacement for the injured Tim Worrell? You know, like that young pitcher who never pitched in the 2002 World Series because they didn't have a World Series that year."

and who comes off?  Is he going to be eligible for post season?  So Chulk is serious injury?

how reliable is source?
Assume Lincecum becomes a reliver, what inning will he pitch?

Re: He must be placed on 40 man roster
if I remember correctly KRod was already on Angels 40 man roster when called up during September.  Lincecum is NOT on Giants 40 man roster at this time.

He must be in the organization
http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060828&content_id=1633085&vke y=news_tex&fext=.jsp&c_id=tex

Rule 40(a) goes on to say that if an eligible player is unable to play in a postseason series because of injury, his club may request permission from the Commissioner to replace him with a player from the club's Minor League system.

There are two restrictions with regard to the replacement player. First, he must have been on a Minor League roster for the club in question on Aug. 31 (and remained in the organization through the end of the regular season). Second, an injured pitcher may only be replaced by a pitcher. And a non-pitcher may only be replaced by a non-pitcher -- and they don't have to play the same position.

Re: He must be placed on 40 man roster
Lincecum hasn't needed to be on the 40-man yet because no one can steal him away yet (like in the Rule 5 draft).

Maybe Benitez goes on the DL?

Re: He must be placed on 40 man roster
The Giants site indicates that Kelyn Acosta was never taken off the 60 Day DL, I assume due to his new injury.

That means the Giants have only 39 spots on the roster filled, and can add Lincecum without dropping anyone.

If Bhaakon says it's true, I trust him.

Re: Lincecum gets the Call Up, Chulk Out with Groi
I heard this on KNBR right after the game and posted a thread on the Giants mlb.com board.

Bruce said specifically that he went into Felipe's office after the game to find out about Chulk's injury and asked if there'd be any help coming up.  He also apparently specifically asked if Lincecum would ever be considered, to which Felipe replied "I haven't talked with Brian about anything yet."

Then his phone rang. Felipe hang up, smiled at Damon and said, "Lincecum will be here by tomorrow."

How reputable is Bruce? Not so sure, after all he went straight to taking calls and seemed to find it more pertinent to let an A's fan bag on optimistic Giants fans rather than discuss this morsel of news.

Re: Lincecum gets the Call Up, Chulk Out with Groi
It's news to us, most Giants fans probably haven't even heard of Lincecum, or, if they have, don't consider him as anything more than just another prospect.

Which, in a way, I agree with. Lincecum is kicking arse and taking names in single-A, but the odds are against him doing anything positive in the majors right away. It's a real craps shoot.

From the MLB.com wrap
There was one bad thing, however, as right-handed reliever Vinnie Chulk tweaked his right groin and was yanked in the ninth. With three relievers hurt -- Armando Benitez and Brian Wilson as well -- the Giants are expected to bring in another right-hander to the squad.

I sleep tonight and dream that the Angels overtake the A's, make it to the World Series and lose to the Giants after Tim Lincecum pitches all 36 innings of a four-game sweep. Payback is a bitch.

My first thought was "couldn't they call up someone already on the 40-man?" That answer turns out to be no - the only righties left on the 40-man roster are Acosta and Valdez, both injured. And then they have lefties Threets, also injured, and Reina, who has yet to pitch effectively in high A. I didn't realize the cupboard was quite so bare.

Re: Lincecum gets the Call Up, Chulk Out with Groi
While I am extremely excited to see Lincecum in a Giants Uniform I am also exceedingly reluctant to rush him. While he is clearly too good for Single A San Jose what will rushing him to the majors do to his development? What if he gets shelled? How will he handle going back to AAA next year if he doesn't make the opening day roster?

Then again a RHP is needed on the major league club right now with Chulk a big innings eater going down with the groin injury so who are the other options?

I don't know if anyone on this site would share my opinion but instead of Lincecum I would rather have seen either:

Matt Palmer
Billy Sadler

Im a big fan of paying ones dues and I think both of these guys (Palmer more so) have done it and with success.

Of course the downside to these two guys are that Sadler walks too many people and Palmer while he has done well both starting and relieving the last few years was only a 31st round pick, is getting on the old side, has only just tasted AAA and doesnt have blazing stuff (Which I am just assuming given some of his numbers)

Somewhat exciting, sure. But with a heavy dose of unnervingness.

Funny, I was headed home from the game, listening to the radio, and I heard Damon Bruce mention a couple times he'd have an update on Chulk's injury and what it means/who could get called up as a result. I got home before he made it to that segment, but the thought of Lincecum getting called up never even crossed my mind. Ugh.

Re: Can't say
I agree with Keenlow. Palmer would be my choice because until Sanchez was called up, he worked effectively out of the bullpen in Norwich this year. I haven't seen Lincecum pitch, but how effective can  he expected to be in a tight race with just a couple of months in the low minor leagues?

Yes, that and the fact he's had experience at the highest Minor League levels. Neither Lincecum or Palmer leave me oozing with confidence, but I would rather not risk the psyche of a top prospect this quickly.

Re: Can't say
Ah the computer grabbed me by the behind again! Roger, I do not disagree with your aggressive stance regarding position players, but I do on pitchers. Pitching is more fragile than ever today. I only have two rules regarding young pitching; 1) Don't push it, let it mature. 2) Don't ever give up on left handed pitching, there just isn't enough to go around.

The Giants are very careful with their young pitchers, at least in Norwich. They all begin the season on a strict pitch count. It will increase as the season progresses. No reliever can pitch in three consecutive games. (Don't know if this is true throughout the organization.) Steamer rarely lets them pitch two in a row.

However this whole issue is simply another example of how weak the Giant farm system is today. If anyone thinks Valdez would have made a difference, they're nuts. Wilson, maybe, but I don't mind taking my chances with Palmer.

So, Roger, your hopes aren't too high for an immediate positive impact. Hopefully whoever they called will get used about like Miller has, in relatively low stress middle inning situations.

I hope they've decided to call up Sadler. They will have to put him on the 40-man roster this winter anyway, or risk losing him in the rule 5 draft. If they put Lincecum on, that means one more prospect gets exposed who otherwise would be protected.

Palmer pitched very well as a starter here in Fresno, but, did poorly on the road. Don't know what that means as far as pithcing in the Majors. He was very fun to watch these past few months in Fresno. Very effective. He developed a two seam fastball I think, that changed his success rate tremendously.Another pithcer, Matt Kinney would have great days and then was hit hard other times. He does have Major League experience, and, pithces relief and as a starter.

Bad news about Chulk, I like him quite a bit.  Hopefully it's not too serious.

While it would be exciting to have The Enchanter up, I don't think this is necessarily a good plan.

I hope they only put him in games in non-stressful situations, at least until he shows that he's capable of handling big league hitters.  There's a huge difference between dominating in San Jose and being able to compete in the Majors.

Of course if gets called up and helps the Giants win the division I'll be very glad that we had his help.

from the Mercury News ...
Right-hander Vinnie Chulk was escorted off the mound in the ninth inning after tweaking his groin on a pitch.

Felipe Alou didn't kill postgame suspicion that No. 1 draft pick Tim Lincecum could be taken off Class A San Jose's playoff roster and promoted to the big leagues.

From the last paragraph of today's Chron story:
"The only downer for the Giants was Vinnie Chulk's departure in the ninth with a right-groin injury, bad news given how short the Giants are in right-handed short relief. Felipe Alou said the Giants might call up another minor-league pitcher -- not Tim Lincecum -- but Chulk said he was fine and expects to be sitting in the bullpen tonight, ready to pitch and perhaps sneaking a glance at the scoreboard."

Who knows what they'll do at this point.  Hopefully Chulk's injury is not serious.

Re: Lincecum
Didn't hear any confirmation of this on KNBR this morning driving my son to school, you would think they would have hit up Kruk for his opinion if they felt that Lincecum is coming up, that's big news.

Probably everything happened as merkin and others have laid out.  The newspapers rush to publish right after the game ends so it is no surprise they don't have anything concrete to confirm or deny.

However, given the KNBR no news this morning plus the Giants website has nothing, they probably went back to the Giants for confirmation and the Giants would not do it.  It could be Felipe played a joke on Bruce or it could be that they hadn't made the decision yet and Felipe jumped the gun, misunderstanding what was said, or it could be they had a change of mind afterward.  We probably won't find out what's really happening until around game time, so our stomachs will churn until then.

Presuming this is true, I'm with everyone:  excited but worried.  However, I don't worry about how failure would affect him.  It shows how strong a person he is that he recognized the faults that people said he had (control, lack of other pitches) after 2005 season, openly acknowledge these faults, and went out and worked on fixing these faults for the 2006 season and succeeding.

I'm also not worried about his arm either.  Using PAP, it looks like 100,000 is the extreme for most pitchers and he had, like, 400,000 PAP (oh, Pitcher Abuse Points) in 2006 and 200-something in 2005 if I remember right, so according to that his arm should have fallen off by now since he is 4 times beyond even the extreme, and yet he is still pitching and the Giants doctors have OKed him pitching.  In addition, Giants management have voiced a concern about this and still they are pitching him.  So either you believe or you shout "LA LA LA" continuously and loudly until Lincecum shows what he can do at the major league level.

I'm more worried that the vast majority of pitchers who were in the study I read about DID NOT SUCCEED when they came up without a full year of pitching at AAA.  And obviously Lincecum hasn't pitched above high-A yet.  The only saving grace is there were still 16% who "performed well", hopefully he will fall in that 16%.  Which is possible, he has totally dominated A-ball, even more than Cain did when he pitched down there, if I remember right.

But if he comes up, how he does will be a "sign" to me of how this season will end up for the Giants.

Do you know where that study is?  I'd really like to see it. It seems a little odd to me because AAA is not typically full of top pitching prospects (AA is much more so).  I'd like to look a little at their data collection methods.

Re: Lincecum
Unfortunately, it is in a book (Baseball Forecaster annual by Ron Shandler) and, even worse, they don't give you any of their methodology and data collection methods, you basically have to accept their word on the whole deal.  For example, the biggee for me is that they don't even define what "Performed Well" means.

But since I like what they have written on other studies in his books, that is, how they approached those studies and how they explained them, I have accepted the results of that study, which probably came out in an older edition of the book (they carry forward the results of past studies in a section of the book called, "Forecaster's Toolbox").

by Roger on Sep 13, 2006 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Lincecum
My impression is that it is just for that first season of the call-up, they didn't do any examination beyond that first year was my impression.  It also doesn't explain if things can be corrected by putting them back into AAA.  I also just realized that it is either/or, there was not a category for a so-so or OK debut, either they performed well, they performed poorly, or they did well initially and had a 2nd half drop-off.

However, they did note that how a player does in the second half of their first season in the majors shows how well the player did once they faced all the teams again and is an indicator of how they will do going forward.  No numbers, just an observation.

They also noted that pitchers who did do well in their initial call-up tended to have good BPIs, or Base Performance Indicators, for the two years before their debut season.  These BPIs, which for pitchers are BB/9, K/9, K/BB, opposition on base average, ground/line/fly ratios, and expected ERA, would show their true ability whereas often a pitcher would get promoted based on their current season's BPIs, which were good but out of line from previous performance.

Given that Sanchez had pretty good BPI's in 2004 and 2005 (main problem is too many walks), albeit in low-minors, that did portend his success as a pitcher this season in the majors.  Whereas both Correia and Hennessey always had problems walking too much relative to IP and K's plus not K-ing enough.  And they still do.

I'm not surprised, he was constantly injured when he was with the Giants and that was when he was young.  I was hoping maybe it was like Sapulo, the 49ers offensive lineup who got hurt first two years with us then was healthy for another 10 years, but clearly Francisco's arm is not up for starting.  But he would be an awesome closer, so perhaps Nathan could be on the trading block after the 2007 season if Liriano can pitch a full season as a set-up reliever in 2007.

The thing is that he's too young and he's too good to let his elbow/shoulder talk you out of taking the risk that he might manage to stay healthy as a starter if only you improve his conditioning/count his pitches better/other rationalization a team can come up with.

It'll be a few years of injuries before he hits the pen for good, if it comes to that.

The Twins say it's an elbow injury, which is better than a shoulder injury, which was what people originally thought.

True source or not?
Here's the link.  Start the nail-biting......

But this morning's Chronicle specifically mentioned "NO CALLUP FOR LINCECUM."

Not sure what to believe

This certainly stirred things up!
...but KNBR reports that Lincecum WILL NOT be brought up.  He will start for SJ.

I'm not a fan of Damon.  Bring back LK.

I heard this report as well
KNBR at 1PM sports break during Fitz and Brooks

Paraphrased
There have been reports that Lincecum would be called up
In response to these reports the Giants Organization has said "Not Today"

Re: I heard this report as well
No worries... you heard a radio host on the team's flagship station say "He will be here tomorrow" and you cited the source. It's not your fault that the report was flat out wrong.

Re: This certainly stirred things up!
It is confirmed that he is starting for SJ tonight?

As far as his workload is concerned, I'd much rather have him pitch short relief for the big club than start a playoff game on short rest after throwing 95 pitches on Saturday.

But I'm happy to keep him off the 40-man for the time being.

I saw that article from last night too, but I feared that Dog had newer information. I hope that either KNBR was wrong (again!) or that they said he would stay with SJ but not necessarily pitch tonight.

Sorry.  To be more precise, the KNBR news report said that he would start the first game of the A Championship if SJ makes it.  That was the report today.

I think whether or not Lincecum gets the call may depend entirely on weather or not San Jose wins tonight and advances in the playoffs.

Final word from the Giants.
"Felipe was making a joke."

According to Jim Moorehead, he says Damon Bruce reported it 'accurately' to how the situation was.

It would appear that those who heard it from Bruce and reported it as an actual report were misunderstanding it.

by BruteSentiment on Sep 13, 2006 3:36 PM PDT reply actions

Thanks for the word Brute.
I believe it was a joke by Felipe.

But the reporting of it was as clear as day,
to the point of Damon bragging about the fact "no one else has this" and the teasing of the callup before the commercial.

If Damon knew it was a joke, then shame on him.

Re: Lincecum gets the Call Up, Chulk Out with Groi
So is a pitcher going to be called up? I mean, there is an empty spot on the 40 man roster. My vote is still for either...

Matt Palmer

or

Billy Sadler

by Keenlow on Sep 13, 2006 3:56 PM PDT reply actions

Re: Lincecum gets the Call Up, Chulk Out with Groi
I'd like Palmer if they needed a long reliever, but it seems like they have a few of those in Wright and Hennessey. What they'll need is someone who can get a few tough righties out in the late innings, and I think Sadler might be able to fill that role.

Or, they could pick a veteran non-prospect like Kinney or Villafuerte, which begs the question... what do non-roster AAA picthers do when their season ends? Are Palmer, Kinney, and Villafuerte throwing on the side somewhere, hoping against hope that the Giants will call them up one of these days?

Re: Lincecum gets the Call Up, Chulk Out with Groi
I had wondered about that as well. Are these pitchers working out through Sepetember or are they working their "real job" now or both. I remember Palmer being a work out junkie so he is probably ready to go. Hopefully Billy Sadler has been working out , too.

Re: Lincecum gets the Call Up, Chulk Out with Groi
I would imagine somebody would be called up. With the current injuries plus Corriea going 3 innings last night, tonight's RH relief options are Wright, Hennessey and Munter. Not an exciting group.
