More Eugenio Velez stats

I found some stats on him for 2004, but nothing before that on two different minot league teams. One he didn't play much on, must have been called up later or something. He shows up at the bottom of the batter list for each team. It does look like he's having a career minor league season at least this year.

Re: More Eugenio Velez stats
he seems kind of old (24 y/o in A ball) to be consider a good prospect, though he is having a pretty good season.
Let me tell you something my friends. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a Giants fan insane.

Re: More Eugenio Velez stats
Yeah, he may have only started playing in 2004 for some reason, so not sure why the late start, But anyway, did find a site with photos of him as well.

Looks like a ballplayer to me.

One thing you can say, he's doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing against younger competition. Where does he go next year? San Jose?

Re: More Eugenio Velez stats
from what I read, the Giants got him in a Rule 5 draft (minor league version) and were going to send him to Fresno, but sent him to Augusta instead, though I don't know why.

It seems like the team in August does have a lot of guys in their early to mid 20's, but I'm not sure if that's just a team thing, or a league wide situation.

Re: More Eugenio Velez stats
Top prospects in the low-A Sally League are typically 19-21 years old, unless they are recently signed draft picks who are college seniors.  Any older and they are already getting ripe on the vine for stardom, though still could become a nice journeyman.

Great find. No wonder I couldn't find more info. since a site I saw, had (Vancomper) after his name and not (Vancamper) and couldn't fid anything more on that name. Maybe he's a late bloomer.

His name was Vancamper? Maybe he got tired of being nicknamed 'Beethoven'...

Re: More Eugenio Velez stats
I know that age is a big question mark on this guy but i'm pretty excited about him. At least he has been a good find for the Giants in the rule 5. If it were up to me I would really try to test him next year and move him either to AA or AAA.

I have a question. When you take a guy in the rule 5 I know your not aloud to move him down, but are you aloud to move him up? Because I've been wondering why the Giants havn't promoted him given his numbers and his age.

Re: More Eugenio Velez stats
24 years old is old for high-A, let alone low-A, he's dominating because he is that much more experienced and physically developed than the players in that league.  If they thought he was any good, he would have been promoted already.

Players selected in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft, unlike the major league portion, can be assigned any where.

What's keeping us from taking the entire D'Back's farm system, then?

Re: More Eugenio Velez stats
Few players with much potential are available in the Rule 5 draft.  Players are not eligible for the Rule 5 draft until for the first two or three full seasons (depending upon the player's age when he first signed).  A team can protect 40 players on its 40-man roster, and another 35 or so on its AAA roster annother 25 or so on its AA roster.  A year ago, the Giants had only about a dozen players whom they could have lost in the double-A portion of the Rule 5 draft, and maybe a third of them ended up being released from the organization during spring training.
