Giants' Web Gems

For those who haven't noticed, ESPN has been running an "All-Time Web Gems" for each team on Baseball Tonight and Sportscenter, and they're doing the Giants tonight.

Any ideas for the Top 3 in Giants' history?

I'm saying:

  1. Willie Mays in the '54 Series.
  2. Mays climbs over Bobby Bonds and fence to make catch.
  3. Kevin Mitchell's bare handed grab of flyball (for sheer kitsch factor).
What else?

Re: Giants' Web Gems
the only other one I can think of is JT's catch when he fell on his ass and still caught a foul popup. I agree, however, that those are the top 3.
Let me tell you something my friends. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a Giants fan insane.

Also, JT Snow picking up Dusty's kid at the plate in the world series.

Definitely
the kid. If that one doesn't make it on there I'll be mad.

Re: Definitely
There's a big blown up picture of JT grabbing Darren in one of hallways in the HoF. (Nearby is a picture of Matheny's head bowed with his hand on Kyle's jersey hanging in the dugout...very touching.)

Re: Giants' Web Gems
One that immediately pops up in my mind is from August '04 against the Cubs when Dustan Mohr made a diving catch to rob Moises Alou of a potential game-tying hit.  Barry had to hop over Mohr to avoid a collision.  Another is Omar leaping over Kent to turn a double play on Opening Day last year.  That reminds me of another Omar gem from last year where he made three diving snag-and-throws against the Diamondbacks, the last one done while sitting down.  I love Omar.

That reminds me
Of the "Omar" double play; 4-6-5. Engraved in my mind.

I have to say for a diving catch...
The best I can remember was Calvin Murray coming in and towards left from center on slightly wet grass.  He dove and then slid another 20-30 feet on his stomach after making the grab.  Nice looking play.

But other than that, put a camera on Omar, he'll give you some plays.

I blame F.P. Santangelo, while F.P. somehow blames Kuiper.

Re: I have to say for a diving catch...
Actually my favorite Omar is the double play he made this year when he whirled and threw to Feliz to get the runner rounding third.

Re: Giants' Web Gems
Terry Mulholland throwing his glove to first base for the out.

Not really a spectacular play, but by SportsCenter's web-gem criteria it certainly qualifies.

To add to the kitsch-gems I'm sure they can find footage of pitchers being blown off the mound at the Stick.

Once the band moves over there will be enough room on the Feliz-Wagon for all

I hate to say it...
...but Jose Cruz Jr.'s diving catch of a Lo Duca sinking/tailing liner to preserve a game that ended in a victory against the Spawn of Garvey now comes to mind.

I still believe, however, that dropping a can of corn in the playoffs that cost the team a win and likely the series disqualifies Cruz from significant web gem status and that he must return the gold glove he earned that season.

Let me tell you something my friends. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a Giants fan insane.

Re: I hate to say it...
My favorite Joe Cross Junior play woulda been the one where he tracked the ball back to the arcade wall and into the archway, realized the ball was going to come in just on the other side of the pillar, ran around the pillar, then leapt and threw himself into the fence for the catch.  Speaking as someone who needs all of one spin 'round the bat to put me unconscious for the rest of the sloshball game...  wow.

Not 'gemworthy' but I'll never forget it:
In one of Livan Hernandez's first games as a Giant, he did something that only smart, pure ballplayers would do (that, frankly, nice white North American little league grads would never try).  Runner on first; Livan pitches; batter is attempting a sac bunt but pops it forward about 20 feet.  Livan pounces down to the ball & easily could have caught it for the out, but instead puts his arms out & watches it fall at his feet, picks it up and throws to 2nd to start an easy double play that had the runner from first out by 75 feet and the batter by 10 feet.  GREAT stuff because it's something he had already thought about and had locked in his mind, not an improvisation.  Pure baseball genius.  (Yes, I am disappointed in numerous other things about Livan, attitudinal and otherwise.  But the dude understood the game.)
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more/ Or close the wall up with our Giants dead.

He also understood the game where you eat as many cheeseburgers as you can in an hour, then you try to beat that record.

Durham had a similar play on soft liner last year.  I love that stuff.

Re: Giants' Web Gems
It was the 3 I figured.  I was a bit disappointed at the short shrift, though. When I saw them do the Tigers and Yankees there was a whole long rigamarole about the defensive history of the team before the unveiling of top 3. With the Giants last night it was like the show was running late and they were trying to get to the close. Yeah, here's these 3 plays. Goodnight! Underwhelming.

I especially enjoy how it isn't available on the ESPn website as far as I can see. Is there an anti-Giant bias there or what.
I use my hand, to wipe my tears. And I blame Saybean.

#1 Thomson's walk-off HR to win '51 play-off series.

#2a '54 World Series Dusty Rhodes

#2b '54 World Series Willie's catch in Game 1

#3  '62 World Series  McCovey's line drive caught by   Bobby R.

Well #3 was just totally unnecessary -- and cruel!  By the way, I was at that game. Second game I ever saw.

My lowest point ever throughout the eons I have been a Giant fan. As Charlie Brown exclaimed, "Why could't McCovey have hit it six inches higher."

Re: Giants' Web Gems
My Dad was present for both Game 7 of '62 and Game 6 of '02. He was also at the Game 3 in '89 that never happened. His generally pessimistic outlook on all things Giants-related is well-earned.

Re: Giants' Web Gems
Yeah, I can understand how your dad feels. I can add to my list the '51 series, although I had the pleasure of watchng all four games in 1954 on my parents black and white Sylvania TV.

Re: Giants' Web Gems
'51, wow that's before my time. So you're the perfect person to ask: which was the dominant feeling in November of 51 -- the euphoria over the win vs. the Bums or the letdown of the series loss to the Yanks?
