Open Gameday Thread, 8/20

Break out the champagne, everybody -- Grant will be back tomorrow. That is, unless his new bride bumped him off on their honeymoon in some kind of sordid plot to collect on his healthy life insurance policy. Of course, I seriously doubt Grant would marry that type of girl. I'm sure any woman capable of winning Grant's heart would be smart enough to wait until they've been married at least six months before she pulled something like that.

Flippy is the fastest man in uniform.

Woody was approached to start today.

They all wear those Big Wrap-around Sunglasses for day games because it's "too bright outside".

The players call the Ball-Dudes , "Sonny".

Dreamy is the best looking young player.

It's nice what the Giants did for Rueter.
I read he was kind of bitter when they let him go...
does anyone have a picture of that lifesize bobblehead they gave him?
And don't come at me with how pathetic he pitched, he had good control for a number of years.

The weird thing...
about Reuter was that despite his poor strikeout numbers, he didn't have particularly good control and yet somehow still managed to succeed at the big league level.  He allowed  essentially the same walk numbers as Lowry does.

Agreed
Alou entered the year with a career line of .301/.369/.513 (128 OPS+). That's not a bat you want to mess around with, and that's good amount of walking. I like that Alou swings at the first pitch a lot, because if you take all the time pitchers will get ahead of you 0-1 all the time (see Linden, Todd). Plate discipline isn't just about laying off bad pitches, it's also about swinging when you get your pitch.

Over the past three years, Alou is .375/.372/.701 swinging at the first pitch. I say let him swing.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/20
I took a nap about the seventh, watching the AZ/SD game. Brennaman gave me the news...giving in to my urge to kill the messenger would've only netted me broken glass in the carpet.
But miniscule personal bright spot...Az 'pen blew the save and then the game in quick SUCKsession...
...And then the local affiliate shows "D-Backs Playin' Hardball".
Never fails to bring a grin. Better luck down the road.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/20
Well, at least now we can say, for sure, that the season is well and truly over. No more, "Well, they're close enough that if they just get hot..." I just wish that if it was gonna go down like this that we hadn't had that brief winning streak in July.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/20
I don't know how we (or the Giants front office) can say that more now than at any other time in the season. Unless someone has clinched the division and the wild card. Seriously ... haven't we said it's over a dozen times on this blog, and the Giants admin keep making the push for postseason?

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/20
Tk, I'm with you - and Yogi - on that...it AIN'T over 'til it's over. We may look pathetic now, but just wait...we'll look pathetic in the playoffs, too.

Josh - Thanks for your input on Mike LaCoss with your trivia a few days ago.  He's my pre-game guest tonight, and having the HR ammunition will be a nice surprise for him to allow him to reminisce.

Thanks.
