Felipe's nonchalance about losing streak is disgusting.
This from today's chronicle:
"As for the losing streak, Felipe professes not to be fazed by it. `It's happened before,' he said, `I know a man on the other side who lost 21.'"
So, what, 9 losses in a row is no big deal because people have had longer losing streaks in the past??????? How senile is this guy??? That's like saying you don't mind eating a pile of shit because someone else has eaten a bigger pile of shit in the past. I think Flippy is just incapable of laying into his team no matter how bad they're playing. I tell you one thing, though (and I doubt many of you disagree), the time for blind optimism is long, long gone.

what do you want him to say?
Felipe has plenty of flaws worthy of criticism. Are we now going to crucify him for the platitudes he feeds the media? Every public figure, particularly in sports, must be as bland and naive to the media as possible lest they become embroiled in controversy.

Don't get me wrong, though. I saw that movie. In the end he'll make the right choice and not have sex with his sister.

Re: what do you want him to say?
Yes. I vote we criticize Felipe for all his flaws, and then we attribute a few bonus flaws to him, just because.

Re: what do you want him to say?
At least, he would have, if I had a dog. And if I actually saw him on the street.
I ask you, what kind of guy kicks dogs that don't even exist?

(If anyone is wondering, I was one of the many calling for Sabean's immediate removal and made the witty comment about Stanton lowering the avg. age of the team.)

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when ...
And why not? If everything else was the same but Benitez did his job and saved all three games, sure we're 3-6 but still only 1.5 games behind. If he even saved 2 of 3, we're still only 2.5 games out and at .500 once again.
So why throw a fit at that? And he did act, they put Benitez on the spot, putting his position in question in public, then gave him a vote of confidence by declaring him the closer.
Why? Because they really had no choice right now. Had Wilson done as well as he did in the minors last season, I think we would have seen him closing. Had Accardo met the potential that we had envisioned, I think he wouldn't have been traded and would have took the closer role. As leader, you need to make the best of your situation, however unideal it is.
The Billy Martin tandrums only work for a short while, that is why he would get results immediately and shortly after that the troops would be tired of his act and he would be gone again. To be successful, you have to be part psychiatrist and see the big picture and what the alternatives are.
In this case, if you the manager put up some sort of public stink, particularly if the players are playing as hard as they can, they will think you are a poser playing up to the media and showing up the players and you just lost the confidence of the players in your abilities as manager.
However, if you play it cool, because you think the guys are pressing, hopefully that will ease the pressure a bit and they can play to their abilities instead of pressing. They can then let their natural abilities show instead of overthinking things and reacting to things instead of just doing what comes instinctually.

Re: Felipe's nonchalance
"I can't change the closer myself. We have to decide that as an organization."
Scenario 1: Change closer method. It works.
Felipe can say: We made the decision as an organization. I'm happy Chulk/Accardo/Hennessey/Kline is doing so well as the closer.
Scenario 2: Keep Benitez. It works.
Felipe can say: It worked out. I told you I had faith in the guy who we got to be the closer.
Scenario 3: Keep Benitez. It bombs.
Felipe can say: We made the decision as an organization. What did you expect when we don't have use our closer? (Subtext: It's Sabean's fault.)
Scenario 4: Change closer method. It bombs.
Felipe can say: We made the decision as an organization. We need to have a closer. (Subtext: I don't choose the players I'm given. None of these guys have saved games before, so how am I supposed to find a good closer?)

With that said, it is very dishearting to hear these comments somewhat routinely. I think we could all do without the excuses, shoulder shrugging, and complacency that seems to be eminating from management now.

Kill the messenger
I am not much of a fan of Felipe's for the last couple of seasons.
But I think his mild, somehat bemused and world-weary approach to such a stinging streak is actually one of his strong points. He cares as much as we do, and to fight it Felipe possesses a reservoir of serenity to help himself -- and his team -- through times like this.
Here's the one thing to bring home: The Giants could still win the West, but they aren't very good.

Crazy Phil is a phony
Maybe if he showed such enthusiasm or taken responsibility for his own ineptness from time to time he would have a little credibility.
He's a 2 million dollar per year fraud. He's gone at the end of the season so good riddance to his 4 year malaise.

Re: Crazy Phil is a phony
You would feel the same way too if some stranger comes up to you unprovoked other than I happen to be standing in her desired path and she told you "gooks to go back where you came from", not knowing the rich irony that I am exactly where I came from.
Each 9 game losing streak is different. In this case, if Benitez did his job and saved 2 or 3 of the 3 blown saves, we are only 1.5 or 2.5 games back after Tuesday, and were still only 4.5 games back and now with only one win, 3.5 games back. What's the big fricking deal?
There should be no panic in the leader's demeanor or the troops might start to pack it in, you need to act like it's no big deal, they are vets they will straighten things out. If you get all mad when people are working as hard as they can, particularly late in the season, they will quit on you.
And Felipe kicks butts when he needs to, he has benched numerous players when they were not performing, something his predecessor never would have done, in fact, he would rather sit a HOT Big Cat to play a cold Snow, just because Snow is the starter. Or Dunston over Aurilia, heck all those guys over Aurilia. Jensen over Ainsworth. Or play Lofton in the field and put one of the best defensive players in the game in Shinjo at DH.
