Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/19
I think this, in a nutshell, shows why the Giants have been less successful than we wanted.  Wasting energy enjoying other peoples failures is inhumane and does not lend itself to greater success.

In this case....it's not wasted energy.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/19
True, no energy is wasted.  But when you spend your energy enjoying another persons failures, the natural effect is that you will have your own failures to enjoy.

I remember wandering around Yerba Buena Gardens during game six in 2002 and seeing people laughing at children who looked so disappointed in Anaheim.  I remember the quote "Ahhhh, the agony of defeat" then laughs.  At the time I thought, this is not the way to win, or to even enjoy a lead.  At that point in the game the only focus should be on winning the game and the thrill that will provide.

Giants fans have a lot of negativity.  This poster is a classic example.

Call me negative if you want, I am simply pointing out the difference between being a winner and a loser.  Winners accept their losses and appreciate the victories.  Losers focus on losing.  Enjoying someone else's loss is not much different from enjoying your own loss.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/19
But I thought the whole point of being a baseball fan was to be a loser.  Who are the most famous fans?  The Cubs fans, the Red Sox fans, Mets fans, etc.. (Yankee fans don't count).

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/19
What year was it that by beating the Giants on the last day of the season LA killed SF's playoff hopes, and LaSorda was seen bellowing into the camera about historic LA losses , i.e. "NOW the Giants know how it felt in  blahblahblah..."
It's incidents like THAT which fuel our so-called "negativity".
Your intentions and points are well meant, P., but you can't stop this thing...it's too big.

Bonds in the Lineup
Winn cf - 2 for 14 during 5 game winning streak. NOT the key the success.
Vizquel ss - 5 straight games without at least 2 hits. Slumping? Nope.
Durham 2b - simply on fire right now.
Bonds lf - Will he ever get it going? Doesn't look like it.
Alou rf - Hammy problem won't keep him from starting.
Hillenbrand 1b - Hopes to continue recent production
Feliz 3b - hitting .200 since All-Star Break
Alfonzo c - Matheny the new Wally Pipp?
Hennessey p - Looking to entrench himself in the starting rotation.

Yes
They "salvaged some dignity," as Kruk said in the post-game.  Gave the fans something to cheer about, proved they can beat up the likes of Greg Maddux (who is still very good even in weakened 21st-century form).  Wouldn't be surprising to see them just eviscerate Lowe tomorrow -- fingers crossed.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/19
Er, I meant to say, I agree.  The Giants went down swinging despite being down by 10 runs.  It was all pretty much on Hennessey this game.  Hope they can pick it up the goodmomentum next game.

It was cold.
It was the worst anthem ever, ever.

Why didn't Woody throw out the first pitch? I MEAN REALLY.

There were a TON of Dodger fans there. Really loud, too. Everywhere. It never ended.

There was a guy in front of us who kept razzing Maddux, funniest ever. Stuff like, "HEY MADDUX! You're old ... you have a rubber arm ... you're gonna give up a single RIGHT NOW ... you look like you have some gas, Maddux!"

It was cold.

Things got a lot better when it went 10-4.

I didn't think it was that cold...
But there were a ton of Dodger fans there.

10-4 was a good moment wasn't it.  And 10-6.  Ahhhhh that was nice.

I blame F.P. Santangelo, while F.P. somehow blames Kuiper.

Oh yeah!
And the guy in front of us went, in this booming voice,

"GO HOME DODGERS clap clap clap clap clap
GO HOME DODGERS clap clap clap clap clap
GO HOME DODGERS clap clap clap clap clap

AND TAKE YOUR FANS WITH YOU!"

I had...
A "What's the matter with Ethier? HE'S A BUM" behind me and someone trying to start the wave a few sections over.  The Bummer started yelling at them to take the wave back to Chavez Ravine.

Everyone behind me dug the shirt though.

I blame F.P. Santangelo, while F.P. somehow blames Kuiper.
