The mystery of the Schmidt severed head comic solved!

After being haunted by the cryptic comic (http://news.naver.com/sports/index.nhn?category=mlb&menu=cartoon&mode=view&seq=36&of fice_id=223&article_id=0000000023) posted in the game day thread last week, I believe I've solved the mystery.  Today I saw a stuffed toy lying in my brother's car that looked exactly like Schmiddy in that comic.  He told me it's from a Japanese TV show "Anpanman."

Here's the wikipedia description: "The hero of the story, whose head is a bun made by Jam Ojisan. His name comes from the fact that he is a man with a head made of bread (Japanese: pan, a loanword from the Portuguese word meaning "bread") that is filled with bean jam (Japanese: an) called an anpan. His weakness is water or anything that makes his head dirty. He regains his health and strength when Jam Ojisan bakes him a new head and is placed on his shoulders. Anpanman's damaged head, with Xs in his eyes, flies off his shoulders once a new baked head lands. He was created when a shooting star landed in Jam Ojisan's oven while he was baking. He has two special attacks called: An-punch and An-kick. When Anpanman comes across a starving creature or person, he lets the unfortunate creature or person eat part of his head."

I'm sure this bit of news will assuage the sleepless nights we were all suffering from the mystery of what seemed like a rather disturbing comic book strip. ;)

Unfortunate head eating
No wonder Schmidt is leery of Benitez when he gets hungry.

Translation
I asked a Korean friend for a translation a while ago and this is what she came up with:

Panel One:
Hopangman - sigh
Manager - good job, come back in.

Panel 2:
Manager - And, I'm very sorry to ask you this, but could you pitch for one more inning? As you may no, we don't have any others...

Hopangman -Of course, manager! Don't even worry about it!

Panel3:
Hopangman - Then I'll go change my clothes. I'm soaked in sweat!
Manager -Yes Yes.. And thank you so much!

Panel 5:
Hopangman - Of course it's hot with this suit inside!

Panel 6:
Hopangman - Well, if I'm going to change anyways...

Panel 7: Let's do head too

Panel 8:
Speaker: Team change! 7 inning's Lokis's attack is....

Panel 9:
Hopangman - Then! I'll be going now!
Manager - Ohoh.. You look like a different person even though you only changed your clothes...

Bottom: Schmidt, even though his face looks like hopang (which is the face that character has in the comic), his body is like a model!

club ph34r - comics! rally hippo - crappier comics!

Re: The mystery of the Schmidt severed head comic
Thank you for the explanation. You have just made that creepy comic much, much worse.

You can just rock me to sleep tonight.

I think I understood it better
Before I heard the explanation.

In all fairness
Imagine trying to explain something like Squidbillies or Wonder Showzen to a Japanese or Korean person.

Hell, try explaining them to a fifty year old American.

Wonder Showzen is hilarious idiocy.
And I'm 46.

Re: The mystery of the Schmidt severed head comic
Wow, Schmidt does really bare resemblance (IRL)  to Anpanman.  That ref went right over my head.  I love that comic btw (despite not knowing Korean).

Re: The mystery of the Schmidt severed head comic
I always thought Schmiddy bore a striking resemblance to the Head Elf of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer fame.
