More Trade Rumors

This may shock you lot - but apparently, the Giants are interested in a player under the age of 35.

Re: More Trade Rumors
That would be awesome.

If the Rockies trade him within the division to us, they would be stupid.

Let's hope they are stupid.

Re: More Trade Rumors
Please, please, please!  This would be good.  But seriously, considering his career stats, I think the Rockies should trade Helton.  They would get skewered by the fans and press, but think of how much they could get in return.  Helton looks like he is in decline and Shealy looks like he could be a decent 1b.  Hey! If the Rox want to trade Shealy, let's grab him!!!!

What to offer
What do we need to d to get this done. I think Shealy could be our future at 1b and the Rockies are not going to trade Helton.

It makes sense for them to trade him. Maybe not in the division though.

I am however not willing to give up Sanchez, Accardo or Lowry. I am thinking a package including Wilson, Valdez or Hennessey.

I can't respect a team that wears teal and purple pinstripe jerseys.

Re: More Trade Rumors
The Fox article that is linked to makes a lot of sense... we don't have a ton of top prospects to offer, we'll have the room to take on a big (although not huge, in this case) contract, and we're looking for someone who is under contract for a few years. Add the fact that Vidro is hitting pretty well but running poorly, and he may be a candidate to play first down the stretch this year. He's not the big bat that is going to turn this team into the '27 Yankees (and he might struggle a bit from the left side at AT&T), but I don't think it's that bad of a fit.

Re: More Trade Rumors
If this was 2000, Vidro would have been a great pickup. He was a guaranteed .300 hitter with power and durability.

Now that his power is diminished, he's 31 and injury-prone, and hasn't played a full season since 2003, the Giants are somehow interested.

Typical.

Re: More Trade Rumors
Everything's relative.  In 2000, he presumably would have had a much higher price tag.  I think his BA and OBP would help this team a lot.

What's his contract status?

Re: More Trade Rumors
Vidro's got two years left on his contract, for something like $17 mil total.  I think it would be a solid risk for us -- I'd prefer Vidro to Sean Casey, fo shizzle.

I also read today somewhere on ESPN that we are also in the market for Mike Gonzalez....  interesting, no?

Re: More Trade Rumors
Vidro's D is visibly going downhill considerably, too. Watching him pretty regularly here in DC, I'd say Jose has a good chance to be another Durham over the next few years.  Spurts of great production puntuated by plenty of visits to the DL.

by Roger on Jul 19, 2006 9:36 AM PDT reply actions

Re: More Trade Rumors
I think Durham is a pretty good comp: a solid, injury prone switch-hitter who isn't going to win any gold gloves. Durham has a touch more power amd Vidro hits for average more consistently.

Re: More Trade Rumors
If Vidro was going to be moved to 1B, it might be apples and oranges.  Presumably, his diminished range would have less impact over at the cold corner.

Re: More Trade Rumors
Given the intradvisional nature of a potential Shealy deal, the Rockies would almost definitely want Sanchez, particularly because Shealy would start for us today if we had him (and for years to come), but I'd hate to have another Liriano situation WITHIN our own division. Over at Purple Row, they're already demanding a ton for Shealy.

I'd give them Sanchez for Shealy
Straight up. In fact, I'd throw in Valdez. It'd be robbery.

If they really twist Sabean's arm, he should throw in Simon as well.

Re: I'd give them Sanchez for Shealy
No way would I make that trade. Shealy's 27 or 28 AND he's putting his numbers up at Colorado Springs.  I agree with whatever that other thread was, great players don't get blocked, they force the situation to get resolved one way or another. Shealy's better than anything we've got so i'd be interested in picking him up, but I wouldn't go crazy about it -- he could easily be JR Phillips redux.

by Roger on Jul 19, 2006 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: I'd give them Sanchez for Shealy
Shealy could certainly turn out to be J.R. Phillips, and Sanchez could turn out to be Francisco Liriano, but a hitter who has mashed (and walked) at every level has a better chance of long term success than a pitcher with 16 innings (and 11 walks) above AA.

And Shealy is no Phillips, who hit a pleasant little .259/.330/.470/.800 in his minor league career.

Shealy's senior year at Florida - .379/.454/.713/1.167
2002-2005 at four levels - .324/.417/.594/1.011
Cup of coffee in the majors - .330/.413/.473/.886 in 91 at-bats before going 2-4 today
Injury-shortened 2006 in AAA - .284/.351/.568/.919

Yes, his strikeouts or his glove could be his downfall (I bet he gets traded to the AL), and if Sabean is a little gun-shy about moving a live-armed lefty after the Liriano deal I'd understand, but I'd take that chance.

Re: More Trade Rumors
About the Fox/Vidro rumor, the two sources who say the Giants are chasing Vidro appear to not have knowledge of the Giants intentions whereas the Giants source says that the Giants are not chasing Vidro.  I would believe the Giants source before the others, the other two could just be spreading rumors started by the Nationals/Bowden, to build up "competing" bidders for Vidro, particularly since there's the Alou/Expo connection (former Expos here include Grissom, Moises, Kline, Hermanson, Fassero, could throw in Brower too, sort of), the Giants future deep pockets, and need for 1B now and 2B in future.

However, the concept makes a lot of sense, the Giants could take on a huge contract someone else might want to ditch.  But Vidro?  Don't make sense since Sabean typically try to get defense for 1B.

Which would point to a Helton trade, he has a LOT of years left on his contract with a HECK of a LOT of money, the Giants could eat that easily, replacing Bonds salary with that essentially, and he plays good defense and hits.  My main issue is this appears to be a decline year and he's in the right age range for that, so he could be a gigantic version of Edgardo Alfonzo for the rest of Helton's contract.

The money deal would work with Burrell too if we play him at 1B first, then maybe move him to LF.  But I would assume the poor defense would be a problem with him.

For some reason, I cannot get the Shealy article to open up, but I agree that it would take an overbid on our part to get the Rockies to part with Shealy, Sanchez, Valdez, plus maybe EME or Schierholtz or Ishikawa, because of the intra-division nature of the trade.

What other 1B that other teams want to dump?
