Todd Walker?

From MLB Trade Rumors.com:

"Todd Walker To The Giants?
According to a source of Bleed Cubbie Blue, Todd Walker will be traded this month.  The source indicated that the Giants are the likely suitor and that they would use him at first base."

Why would we bother with this guy?

Re: Todd Walker?
That would be a horrible non-move. Guy sucks defensively and doesn't give us the pop we need in the middle of the order when the geriatrics take days off. If we give up more than used baseballs I say we'd have paid too much.
I use my hand, to wipe my tears.

Re: Todd Walker?
I wouldn't mind having a guy like Walker on the bench, but to start at first? that would not be a good move. Plus, we'd probably overpay for him.
FIRE FLIPPY NOW!

Re: Todd Walker?
That would be worthless.  Walker does have a good OBP but that's about it.  He's got nothing else and not enough power.

Re: Todd Walker?
Not as bad as the Cubs pitchers, Mets have scored 11 runs in the 6th on two grand slams and a 2 run home run, and it's still going.

Fans booed like crazy and threw a bunch of stuff on the field.  Makes me happy to actually be a Giants fan and not a Cubs fan.

Re: Todd Walker?
Although it should be noted Walker did have two errors in the inning, that were a big part of the rally and was awful at the plate.

Basically please Sabs DO NOT make this guy your new 1B.

Re: Todd Walker?
Well, it isn't just the pitchers.  Roberto Novoa has recorded one out and allowed 5 hits and 6 runs, but none of them were earned.

Because of 2 errors in the inning.  Both by Todd Walker.  Walker is also 0-4 with a K.

Hence the follow up "it should be noted" response to my post above.  Thanks for backing me up though.

That's kind of a "get out of my head!" situation... your follow up beat my reply by one second :)

Re: Todd Walker?
real bad move... that exactly why this guy will be here shortly. sounds like something we'd have done. a trade made for trades sake. so the brass can say they have made some BIG changes to make a second half push. YUP. anytime now.. how bout richie sexon  for schmidt. first base and power.?

Re: Todd Walker?
Are you kidding?  Sexson is batting .222/.293/.424.  For comparison's sake, Feliz has a .277/.312/.493 line.

Schmidt doesn't have the best record in the world, but that is mostly a function of run support.  He is still one of the premier pitchers in baseball.  Sexson for Schmidt would be absolute highway robbery.

If Sabean did that, I would immediately fly back to SF and lead the charge for Sabean to be hung outside AT&T for public display.

Sexson
I will direct you to...

http://ussmariner.com/2006/07/15/uhh-sorry/

Right-handed hitters get killed in Seattle the way lefties get killed by our ballpark. While Sexson's road numbers aren't exactly world-beating, it's not hard to see that a change of scenery could do him a world of good. You're right that a one-for-one likely isn't enough, but Seattle's not gonna trade Sexson AND Adam Jones or Chris Snelling.

Re: Sexson
As for RH hitters getting killed in Seattle: Sexson hit .263/.369/.541 last year with the same home ballpark.  So either he just sucks this year or there is something wrong with him.  I would probably take that chance if his salary weren't so damn high.  He has two years left on his contract at $14m (!) per year.

I would trade Niekro and Ellison for him IF the M's paid half his salary for the next two years.  Maybe.

Re: Todd Walker?
Walker at 1B makes no sense. He's LH, so how can we have a LH/LH platoon with Sweeney? He has JD Snow-esque power. Decent OBP.

Walker has started 942 games at 2B, 58 games at 3B and 38 games at 1B in his career. So he's an OK backup to oft-injured Durham and Feliz.

But as a 1B? Hopeless.

Unless we can get him as a roster filler for Yamid Haad, I'd nix this trade tout suite.

Re: Todd Walker?
Only if they take El Dopo. Even at that it is a bag of doo-doo in exchange for a bag of poo-poo.  Giants can't afford holes in defense, and the big bat is going to have to come from within, I'm afraid.   Too many contending teams have needs.  Too many of these teams have better stuff to barter. There are more buyers than sellers.  Kinda like buying homes in the bay area where a 1400 square foot shoebox fetches 7 figures.

It's gonna have to be a reenactment of the Miracle on Coogan's Bluff for the boys to be playing this autumn

He blames Tomko and I blame Magowan, Alou, Morris, Benitez, El Dopo and a player to be named sooner rather than later--Lance Tool Niekro

Re: Todd Walker?
Walker just isn't a good enough hitter. His career EQA is around .260.

Now, if he's real cheap, fine, but I'm not holding out hope that he would turn our season around.

To use Sabean's words, he's not a "difference maker."
