Link Dump, 7/14

Ken Rosenthal:

"White Sox general manager Ken Williams might be aggressive, but he isn't reckless. So, discount any reports that he's willing to trade right-hander Brandon McCarthy and center fielder Brian Anderson to the Giants for right-hander Jason Schmidt.

Not even the most hare-brained GM would move two young talents, each with less than one year of service time, for a potential free agent that could depart in less than three months."

Rosenthal also lists the Giants as a "possible suitor" for Alfonso Soriano.

Henry Schulman:

"One rumor has the Giants sending Jason Schmidt to the White Sox for 23-year-old pitcher Brandon McCarthy and 24-year-old outfielder Brian Anderson. That would be a great trade for the Giants if a) they have given up on 2006 and b) they are sure Schmidt will walk when his contract expires. But neither is true.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean said the Giants would have to go into a "horrific slide" toward the end of July before he would become a seller or consider dumping Schmidt, and he does not see that happening.

"We're still unequivocally buyers," he said."

Pravda has an interview with Barry Bonds:

"I don't usually comment [on the case] because I don't know how to comment on it," said Bonds, who will turn 42 on July 24. "I don't know why the government is doing what it's doing. It doesn't make any sense to me. I don't know how to discuss the case. I really don't. Maybe later on I'll be able to. I try not to think about it. I try to keep my mind as clear as I can and as positive as I can."

About his possible return to the Giants, Bonds said: "My thing in San Francisco is based on the fans. If they want me back, then that's probably what I'd want to do. It's my home. That's where I'd want to be."

Re: Link Dump, 7/14
Can he play first?

Or, more importantly, can he be traded for someone who can play first?

Re: Link Dump, 7/14
NO he can't play first.  Well, maybe he can, but unrealistic. How about moving Barry or Steve Finley to first? I can dig it.

I don't expect the White Sox to push hard for Schmidt, but this sentence is just patently false. GM's (hare-brained and otherwise) make deals like this every July.

Mostly Non-Baseball Stuff
The Ladder Theory - Is it humor? Sort of. It's definitely funny.

Peter Gammons's HOF Speech Transcript - Self-explanatory.

What She Doesn't Know Will Kill You - Perhaps THE classic college student newspaper column of my generation.

Ballad of Isiah (YOUTUBE) - A song and video I made a while back about Isiah Thomas and how he's screwing up the Knicks. One of my buddies in NY is now insisting I come up with a Warriors song.

Fake Bartman Interviewed on ESPN (YOUTUBE, via Deadspin) - I saw this live when it happened. My roommate and I looked at each other and then laughed for the next ten minutes. For the next few weeks, all we had to do to induce giggling was say, "We've been had."

Round 10 of the Castillo-Corrales Fight (YOUTUBE, reg. req'd) - In which one fighter gets knocked down twice, his corner wants to throw in the towel, but he convinces them to let him continue, and then...

Cool that logo features a splash hit.  That's the one thing that may make the home-run derby bearable; if that add some incentive for reaching the bay, the glove, the coke bottle, etc.

Not exactly a link but...
If you're ever bored and want a new book to read, try reading The Blue Nowhere by Jeffery Deaver.  The setting is in the south bay and it's about a hacker who has turned into a killer.  Very good book.

And anyone who hasn't read The DaVinci Code or Angles and Demons yet get going.

I take it back, I do blame F.P. Santangelo and Greg Papa.

Re: Not exactly a link but...
I work in a bookstore and reading is a required part of my job. I've heard Water For Elephants is the best book of the year so far. Everyone who's read it loves it...I haven't gotten around to it yet. I read mostly young adult stuff, but I read The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory and really liked it.

Summer is the best time to read. You can actually finish books. I've been reading Margeret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Death Gate Cycle mostly, but adding in extras as they come.
