Grant's Top Prospects circa 2003

I was bored so I wondered over to the old WFB site and stumbled across this.  I thought it would make for a decent discussion since the G-men are off until Friday. Imagine if just one or two(other than lowry) had panned out.  We might not be dealing with SITUATION Morris for the next 2 and a half years.  Although they did help bring us Hawkins, Winn, AJ, and Ponson(if that is something to be proud of).

Top Ten Prospects List (Actually Grant, you skipped number 7 so it is your top 9, we'll just pretend that was Liriano's spot)

I'm no scout, and I'm not an expert with stats. What I'm great at, however, is consuming information and regurgitating it as if I discovered it. This isn't a top ten list, really, as much as it is a list of the prospects I'm most interested in for 2003.

1. Jesse Foppert, RHP
He reached AAA with about 300 lifetime innings of pitching under his belt. That's counting the minors and college, and he still looked like Nolan Ryan pitching in a tee-ball tournament.

2. Jerome Williams, RHP
I'm still wondering what kind of car he's going to get when he turns 16.

3. Kurt Ainsworth, RHP
He might not be Curt Schilling, but I can see him being Chan Ho Park in Park's "on" years. I'll take that.

4. Todd Linden, RF
He stands to be the first above-average outfielder produced by the Giants since "The Empire Strikes Back" came out. Think about that for a while. If you put together an outfield of the best prospects developed by the Giants in the past twenty years, you'd have Rob Deer in left, Marvin Benard in center, and Chili Davis in right. We're all rooting for you, Todd.

5. Boof Bonser, RHP
If he is a star for the Giants, it would be mighty cool to hear a crowd of 42,000 sing, "Booooooooof!" in unison. Of course, he could be terrible, and never know he was being booed. Jeff Brantley might have received a ten-year deal if his name was "Boof", with management thinking he was some sort of cult hero.

6. Ryan Hannaman, LHP
Young, throws gas, and struggles with his control. Welcome to the Giants, and here's your commemorative William VanLandingham, Joe Nathan, and Shawn Estes bobblehead set!

8. Jesse English, LHP
I know two things about him. One is that he was drafted far lower than Baseball America ranked him. The other is that he tore up the Arizona League right out of high school.

9. Noah Lowry, LHP
Injuries stole most of his year last year, but he still did well. He's supposed to be close to the majors, and is described as Kirk Reuter with a better fastball.

10. Tony Torcato, OF
I'm not ready to give up on him yet. He's still young, and I think he's the type of player who makes contact whenever he swings, driving down his walks. He could be Randall Simon, or he could be Ichiro without the speed. His swing is beautiful, though, and gives me a little hope.

The Giants' minor league organization has the balance of a hobo with an inner-ear infection and a bottle of Thunderbird. But even if the lack of position players is depressing, the pitching prospects they have are legitimate. The only pitcher on that list who didn't average one strikeout for every inning pitched was Jerome Williams. It's hard to find another team with that kind of depth.

Also note that this list was at the very, very beginning of my blogging, and is kind of an embarrassment in retrospect. I probably had more business ranking aerospace/defense companies than I did baseball prospects.

I think #7 was accidentally erased.

Re: who is Jesse English???
He was a much hotter prospect back then, of course, but there were always questions about his maturity. He had some injury problems, but is back in the Northwest League this season.

I thought I had heard of him...
But not really sure.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/E/Jesse-English.shtml

Guess he'd been inactive in 2005 because of an injury?  2.68 ERA in his first year of Rokkie ball (2002) and 3.98 in his second year (2003), with a 7.48 ERA in Hagerstown (2004).

I take it back, I do blame F.P. Santangelo and Greg Papa.

Re: who is Jesse English???
He's doing fairly well this year in SK actually. And still pretty young.

2003 In AZL rookie ball:

Two Different 17 year olds:
4-1    2.68    47.0 IP      33H   18BB    68K

0-1    3.72    19.1 IP      13H    11BB    20K

English was the 6th round pick, Cain the 1st. English outperformed Cain, but Cain worked hard and English didn't [according to reports I read] miss many meals.

Re: Let me summarize...
I would have to disagree about Boof, his ERA is in the 5's (high 5's?) and I think he's been optioned to the minors at the moment by the Twins, so I would not name him as a good SP, he is, at best right now, an innings eater.

Re: Grant's Top Prospects circa 2003
You know, that we have forgotten that in 2003 we were mentioning Joe Nathan's name right between William VanLandingham and Shawn Estes may be the biggest bit of revisionist Giants history for those who beat Franciso Lir...er, the dead horse mercilessly.

In 2003, no one thought he was a godly closer-in-making.  He was an injured starter who was a punchline and trying to come back by trying relieving.

Re: Grant's Top Prospects circa 2003
I've always believed in Joe Nathan, back since 1997.  You can ask any of my friends.  Liriano, I thought he was a good for nothing... oh nevermind.

Re: Grant's Top Prospects circa 2003
Does anybody remember a game in St. Louis in '98 during Nathan's rookie year.  It was on ESPN, I think a Monday night game.  The bullpen blew about 3 or 4 different leads and it ended up going about 13 or 14 innings. After the Giants scored again to take the lead, whoever was pitching loaded the bases up and it looked like another lost lead. Finally, having used up all the relievers, they brought Nathan in as a last resort and he proceeded to strike out the heart of their order to end the game.  I remember watching that game and thinking, wow! that guy could be a real closer some day.  Of course, then came the shoulder trouble and that thought went away.

Re: Grant's Top Prospects circa 2003
This piqued my curiosity.  Using Retrosheet.org, the closest thing I can saw to fit your description is a game on Sunday May 16, 1999 at Houston.  Is this the one?

Re: Grant's Top Prospects circa 2003
Wow is my memory bad! 1999 was his rookie year, of course, not 98, and he only had 1 save in his career until 2003, so if he saved that game that's probably it.  Sunday Night ESPN game, I remember that I had to run a bunch of errands but could still hear the game on ESPN 1000 in Chicago, so it probably was a Sunday Night game.  Did he strike out Bagwell to end it?  I remember back to back Ks.

Re: Grant's Top Prospects circa 2003
I remember back to back Ks.

According to the boxscore, Nathan only had one k in the game.

Did he strike out Bagwell to end it?

It appears that Bagwell made the last out as he had 6 PAs, while Caminiti, who was hitting behind Bagwell, only had 5.  Bagwell did strike out 3 times on the night, but you can't tell from just the boxscore if Nathan struck him out.
