All-Star Game Open Thread

I've always enjoyed the All-Star Game rule requiring one player from each team, even though the Royals really made me rethink that position this year. In the lean years for the Giants, it was always nice to have one little bone thrown our way with a Chili Davis nod.

I'm sick of the fan voting, though. The American Dreams are the most popular team, granted. But they stuff the ballot boxes to the point where Jacks is the starting shortstop. He doesn't belong in the All-Star Game, even if he does have 13 prestige.

Travis Hafner not on the roster - even if he has to catch - is the most ridiculous snub I can remember.

Why the hate for Mark Redman?
You will have to learn to like him when he pitches for the Giants...

I think Jacks and his friends may have cost me more than a few GPA points in both HS and college. Probably worth it though.

The Dodgers are evil.

I think it should be All-Star announcers, as well.  Maybe voted in by sportswriters or something.  Or even just Vin Scully.

Re: Joe Buck and Tim McCarver...
Too bad ESPN doesn't get the all-star game. They at least we'd get Jon Miller. Morgan is horrible, but not as bad as either Buck or McCarver.

Re: Joe Buck and Tim McCarver...
I freely acknowledge that we are scraping well into the structure of the bottom of the barrel for conversation material when we start bitching about announcers, so I'll jump right in.

I would rather listen to Joe Buck any day of the week rather than listen to Joe Morgan talk about anything and have to pretend to be polite about his lousiness.

Tim McCarver actually DOES have the occasional useful insight, and has a certain amount of polish in his game (e.g., working with his broadcast teammates, segues, supporting them, etc.)

Jon Miller is the 24k gold standard, and maybe Scully in his prime was the platinum standard.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more/ Or close the wall up with our Giants dead.

Anyone who feels that a baseball game should be broadcast as a football game should be, should not be allowed to broadcast at all.

Re: All-Star Game Open Thread
I don't know how they choose for each position, but when I see that Robinson Cano has 5 HRs, 34 runs, and 27 RBI, and Hafner has 25 HRs, 68 runs, and 74 RBIs, something is wrong. There should be a rule that no player can get in if their combined run and RBI total is less than the total of either of these stats of another player who was not selected...

Re: I politely disagree...
I'm not a fan of the DH rule, but those are some monster numbers. To put them in perspective, at the all-star break Hafner has five more home runs and only one less run and seven less RBIs than the Giants leaders in those categories for all of 2005. I'd put him at first base and tell him he doesn't even need to bother fielding grounders if he could put up those numbers for us. (I would make him catch the throws from the infielders, though. Fair is fair.)

Chili
My all-time favorite. And my favorite memory is of Buffy LaCoss interrupting Gary Park's interview with Chili in 1987 by pouring a bottle of champagne over his head and screaming, "Nice going, Chuck!" in his ear. This was moments after Will Clark famously "overmodulated." Good times...

Re: All-Star Game Open Thread
I think I just had a revelation about why the voting seems so wacky.  Before the innterweb, you had to go to the games - so really there was no HUGE edge in voting (since good teams in small markets at least drew even with teams in big markets).

But then I looked at the rosters and they don't seem that imbalanced (by starting position players) than usual.  Mets/Yanks/Redsox all have good teams.

Unless... don't tell me fans picked the reserves this year?

I really hope that next year the Giants can write into their All-Star contract that our PA Announcer will be announcing the players.

Where's the excitement? It's freaking Pittsburgh! I've heard more excitement announcing Felix Jose when he was on a visting team.

A horrible thought just occurred to me...Maybe that was the Pirates' PA Announcer. And I thought they hit a new low with the "Ode to Bay" poem.

Remember when the All-Star game
was actually a game. Selig wants the players to treat the game as an important one, he should stick to his luxury box and stay off the field. Only players should be on the field.

I am VERY glad that Schmidt wasn't used. He's seemed gassed lately and it's a good thing that he'll get more like a 4-day break.  I try to live my life so that I never have to be beholden to anyone Texan (I'm still willing to sell that piece of shit territory back to Mexico for a peso per hectare, no money down, no credit check, with a bank draft written in crayon), but thanks, Garner.
